You know, i hadn’t really looked at it that way before. Plame, a true patriot who was betrayed by the entity she had devoted her life to. it’s something worth a thought or two.
In fact, Maher gives a true-to-life comparison of Plame to the plight of The Boss in Metal Gear Solid III: An American agent devotes her life to her country and cause and is turn betrayed by them for circumstances that are beyond her control.
If this is the reward for ‘Patriotism’ then I don’t really see what it is that conservatives think that they are setting themselves up for with their unwavering loyalty.
Maher references an excellent Twain quote: patriotism to government only when they deserve it. Cheers.

haha. Niger, please! This is great.

Maher is hilarious, good post.
I disagree with him in terms of another Clinton restoring some sort of lost integrity (has Washington ever really had any? maybe in 1776 and even then not so much). But of course, that’s what great about living in Canada I guess… Either way he’s hilarious.

Maher and Olbeman. Righteous dudes.
March 28th, 2007 at 3:58 pm
I’m sorry, what was he talking about? I could not hear anything beyond how cocky he was.
March 28th, 2007 at 4:03 pm
I’m no expert on when information of any kind was released in the States, but how could a nation turn so dramatically on their leader after voting him in a second time? Did people really think Bush would dig himself out of this hole? Cause it only looks like he digs it deeper every single day.
March 28th, 2007 at 4:06 pm
tthorgeirson, the spread of information and public opinion is an exponential function. Plus the Iraq war apparently hadn’t gotten ‘bad enough’ yet.
March 28th, 2007 at 4:27 pm
And there’s that matter of whether or not Bush was actually elected either time.
March 28th, 2007 at 4:30 pm
It amazes me that anyone at all voted for Bush, I mean.. come on. Sure, you can mess up once, but twice?
But then again, with all the bullshit that’s going on, who really knows anything about anything anymore.
March 28th, 2007 at 5:21 pm
Yeah, I saw this on a Progerssive Blogger’s site. Love it. “New rule: traitors don’t have the right to question my patriotism.” Hear, hear.
March 28th, 2007 at 5:24 pm
To those who voted for Bush twice,
“Fool me one, shame on you ~ Fool me twice, shame on me.”

I LOVE BILL MAHER!!!
-He tells it like it is, and one smart cat,
We all know Cheney calls the shots, It’s such a mess to be led in such a mess, when all that will be acomplished is more hate and confusion, worldwide,
Shame on you Bush!

…leaked like the plumbing at Walter Reed.
Awesome.
March 28th, 2007 at 6:19 pm
You don’t know how badly I wish my flash was working
March 28th, 2007 at 6:34 pm
Bill Maher is awesome.
March 28th, 2007 at 6:46 pm
Considering that the US is on the brink of going to war with Iran over their nuclear ambitions and that Plame was working exclusively on counter proliferation… well… Oh for f**k’s sake, what’s the freakin’ point. Someone hang them all… please.
March 28th, 2007 at 7:37 pm
Matt - thanks - that was a great bit - Maher is brilliant.
@ Yossarian - what a softy - hanging? That’s letting them off easy.
I like this one: Have Bush, Cheney, Rumsfeld, Rove, Rice and Gonzales all kneeling on the White House front lawn, give them each a nice, long knife, and have them commit hara-kiri. No seconds to back them up, though - too much like cut and run.
March 28th, 2007 at 8:10 pm
Ah, pure brilliance. I need to make a note to watch him more often.
March 28th, 2007 at 8:31 pm
Matt,
Off Topic here.
Every time I go to listen to “can’t get shot in the back” it just takes me to the main homepage.
I’ve listened to it before with no problem. but tonight I’m having a problem.
Why?

Al Franken (running for the Senate in ‘08) was on Letterman this evening speaking to this.
He said, in light of Rove and Libby’s outing of CIA Agent Valerie Plame–an act considered treason as the current president’s father has said, and punishable by death–he’s awaiting their execution.
Has anyone read Stephen Grey’s “Ghost Plane: The True Story of The CIA Torture Program” (St.Martin’s Press, 2006)? Fantastic journalism and an excellent read.
He begins the book by citing the case of Philip Agee–a former CIA officer who in his 1975 memoirs, and quite disaffected with the intelligence organization, mainly for its use of torture, published the names of several CIA agents–leading to much criticism including, as Grey says:
“President George H.W. Bush, a former head of the CIA himself, once said he would forgive many people in his life, but he would never forgive Philip Agee.”
I wonder if he’ll forgive his own son for employing people who not only condone torture, and ‘extraordinary renditions’ the likes of which most notably Maher Arar experienced–or those who oust CIA operatives for, as Bill’s nicely summed up in the clip, political purposes.
Shame.

I really like Bill Maher. He’s got a great way of putting things to point and in a light that helps people see just how pathetic the current administration is.
March 29th, 2007 at 9:34 am
“how could a nation turn so dramatically on their leader after voting him in a second time?”
I totally agree with you tthorgeirson - and all that shit they slung on the Dixie Chicks for thier opinion……WTF?
March 29th, 2007 at 9:52 am
What channel is Maher’s show on now anyway? Anyone that has John Legend on is gold in my books.
March 29th, 2007 at 10:53 am
good stuff. Liked the Mark Twain quote too.
March 29th, 2007 at 11:05 am
Bill Maher drives me bonkers, but his politics with a bit of Twain and Legend stirred in make it ok.
March 29th, 2007 at 11:11 am
Fabulous burns…he is the KING!
March 29th, 2007 at 12:20 pm
He’s on HBO on Friday nights at 11:00pm EST. I watch every Friday religiously!
March 29th, 2007 at 12:27 pm
Thanks, Sonny. I don’t think it’s broadcast here in vancity. Is it okay to use the term “vancity” or is that, too, copyrighted by the olympics?
