OS X Hacker

If you’re an Apple nut, even if you don’t really delve into the intricacies of everything that your laptop or desktop can do, OS X Hacker is still an invaluable resource if you’re looking for tips and tricks. That and it’s also authored by matthewgood.org contributor and programming aficionado Sonny Parlin - so you really should use it as your default, one stop, Mac tips website simply out of loyalty!
When it comes to getting everything out of my machines that I’m able to, I’m still not quite at Sonny’s level. But thankfully I have his website to fill me in on some extremely interesting and impressive things that you can do with your Mac, be it directly or through new software development, much of which is open source freeware.
For example – one my favourite recent entries on OS X Hacker had to do with pimping your Apple Mail client. Another recent favourite runs through a selection of essential software that Sonny has found both helpful and trustworthy.
Many of you may already be aware of a lot of the content found at OS X Hacker, but as always, Sonny is open to new suggestions and recommendations about everything from tips and tricks to new software that’s become available. If you have something that you feel might interest him, drop him a line at tips@osxhacker.com and I’m sure that he’d more than happy to take a look.

A Greener Apple
While looking for something on the Apple website this morning I came across a link to information about Apple’s environmental initiatives, being that they have been accused by the likes of Greenpeace for not doing enough to make their products more environmentally friendly. I thought that I would link the information so that readers could take a look and cross-reference it with other source materials in an attempt to make up their own minds on the matter. There’s about 3 different apple blogs I read a few times each day, I think I’ll add this to my list. It’s good to see an entry about Apple again. I once had a question a few years back about my old power mac and couldn’t find an answer anywhere so I emailed Matt about it and he graciously gave me a few tips. Thanks Matt!

Awesome.

I’d be more thrilled with apple products I think if any of them were visually-impaired friendly. Apple has the least accessible products for those who suffer from visual impairment and it’s a shame too because I’d strongly consider getting more apple products if they did something to remedy this. I own an iPod but have to use third-party software to upload songs to it because iTunes is virtually inoperable using any narration software; it’s designed to look good but not for good functionality.
If it weren’t for those limitations I’d probably have ditched windows a long time ago.

That is sooo strange I went to the Apple Green website as well this morning just randomly because I am a new Apple convert and also deeply involved in environmental initiatives. Also, OS X Hacker I had no idea existed until this moment and is already AMAZING, thank you SOOOOOOOO much for posting this, like I said, I am a new Mac user, and now massive fan of Apple. What really made me a convert was Vista… anyone who knows very much about this new OS would know why I made the switch. I call it, MicroFascism, because you cant even buy a new Microsoft running computer without Vista, and also cannot take it off your computer. So anyway, I am a new happy apple user, and even more happy that you posted this because I am still learning a lot of what this baby can do. Thanks again.

I’m getting a new lap top around August I think, just before the fall semester. I’m going Mac this time, mostly out of a deep deep hate for PC’s especially Dell. If anyone here is contemplating a Dell…don’t, just don’t. Unless you have a solid 12 hours a week to devote to nervous breakdowns and suicidal ideation (and dell will drive you to both) forget it. You’d honestly be better off with a Packard Bell from 1992 with Windows 3.1 on it. So its a new macbook for me, following Dale’s advice, with 2g ram and a nice 160g harddrive.

Sweet deal, actually I just recently bought an iMac and added (from a 1 gig) to a 2 gig ram, and added an external drive giving me 400 gig’s of hard disk space - and I cannot tell you how amazingly this machine works. I hate supporting any kind of corporate company (although it’s quite difficult in this climate) but Apple is a company that for personal computer use I have to give them much credit for.

Got to check that site out as I’m still on the steep learning curve of OS X ;)
Read about Apple’s lack of green credibility a week or so ago on MacWorld.com and I must say I was shocked to discover they were ranked worst out of all computer makers (even Dell were better!!!)
Just makes you wonder about what major companies really do for the environment, then again, maybe I shouldn’t have been surprised given Apple are run by Americans :P

The greener Apple thing is true… but at the same time, all electronics are going to have to be RoHs compliant (lead free). I was actually at a guitar store last week and saw an RoHS tag on a new Fender Strat which I found kind of amusing (Im an electronics engineer so I find stupid things like that amusing)
So now you know you can play your new guitar without fear of lead poisoning!!!
Finally!

I’m not a big Apple fan…although I do have an iPod. I think it’s just too new for me.
Maybe if I got to know the Mac a little better…

I worked in a computer repair shop for a short time as a work experiance job. After that I don’t think I can even look at a mac again, personal gripe but ipod, itunes, imac are all a lazy built gimic for me unless for video or perhaps photo editing. Working on the inside and general repair is also painful though I guess I could get used to it, I got used to dells!
