This Wrinkle In Time, I Can’t Give It No Credit
I woke up from sleeping late this afternoon and immediately downloaded Headache by Frank Black. I have the Headache EP in a box somewhere, but I wasn’t going to wait to go and dig it out. I always forget how utterly genius that song is. In fact, it might be one of the best songs he’s ever written.
Of course, Wilco just released Sky Blue Sky, which is a must have. Wilco is, in my opinion, one of the best bands of the last 10 years (whatever their line-up), and I think Jeff Tweedy will be remembered as one of the premier song writers of his generation, and certainly the most influential in alternative country. Of particular note from the album is, for me, Impossible Germany and On And On And On.

Frank Black is a genius.

And so is Jeff Tweedy. And not to be a gibbering idiot fan-boy, but I would place you in their hallowed company as well, Mr. Good.

Wilco eh? I have always been a huge fan of your lyrics, and the message you send with your music. Not to be too much of an ass kisser, but in my mind you are top five easily.. in the last 10 yrs.
Cheers

Headache…haven’t thought about that in a long while. CD is now dumped onto my computer, thanks. You’re gonna have to squish over to make some room for Mr. Black on my iPod. :-D
Rediscovered uplifting song of the week - But Not Tonight, Depeche Mode.

Wilco is a phenomenal band, and seeing them last year was easily one of my top 5 concert experiences.

I don’t enjoy Sky Blue Sky as much as Summerteeth or A Ghost Is Born, however, it’s still very good none-the-less.
Impossible Germany is probably my favorite Wilco song ever and Hate It Here is just so fantastic.
This album comes off much more straightforward (both lyrically and musically) than the past couple albums, which is a bit refreshing I think.

The Headache music video is also awesome. I can’t help but recall it when I get the song stuck in my head, which is often, and I’m generally fighting the urge to break out into the marching-in-place w/ arm-swingy thingie Frank’s got going on. I love it.
I’ve had the privilege of seeing Frank Black & The Catholics twice. It is my opinion that Rich Gilbert rules.
Ahhhh, Wilco. Unfortunately I only have YHF at this point, but when I can finally start buying records again (not having the new Manic Street Preachers album right now is hurtin’ big time), I will flesh out my Wilco collection.

Matt, I am going to agree with on the Jeff Tweedy front. I have ventured out this year frequently to the record stores and now own all of Tweedy’s efforts with Uncle Tupelo, Loose Fur and Golden Smog, Billy Bragg, the “I Am Trying To Break Your Heart” DVD, and the “Sunken Treasure” DVD. I am such a Wilco fan-boy. Help me.
It’s the earnestness in his song writing that I am attracted to, and I definitely here some Tweedy influence in your work, especially on White Light Rock and Roll Review. It’s the earnestness and grit in your music that I like as well.
Thanks for making music Matt.

Jeff Tweedy, all by his lonesome, at the Calgary Folk Fest was oh so dope.

I have a couple of Wilco albums in my collection, but I have to say that I have never managed to connect with them emotionally. It’s OK to listen to, but that’s about it.
But now I feel that I’ve been missing out on something ;)

“Headache” is definitely one of his best, such an instantly brilliant song. The harmonies and fullbore backing vocals are infectious and impossible not to join in with. One of my friend’s covered it for a Frank Black fansite compilation and said recording it was extremely fun. I’ll have to dig it out.

i’ve tried to get into wilco before as i really enjoy the alt-country scene, but it’s just never clicked with me. Perhaps I should give them another go. I was pleasantly surprised by Hopeless on White Light Rock and Roll Review as it showed a bit more twang to your music Matt.

The new Wilco is amazing, solid from start to finish. I caught them on Letterman last night performing ‘What Light’.

Frank Black is great indeed!

Ha! I recognized your title immediately! Yeah, just love Frank Black/Black Francis/Or better - love the “Frank Black and the Catholics” name best. I first heard that song when a boyfriend played it for me at 6am when I complained of having a head-ache (hangover). He had a song for every occassion - just like every music nazi. Thanks for the good memory.

Wilco are playing Austin City Limits! I cant’ wait for September!

“Hate It Here” sounds like it should have been recorded by The Band and whenever I listen to it, it reminds me of Scorsese’s The Last Waltz.
You really should check out The National if you haven’t already. They’re an amazing band and they’re realeasing their latest album - Boxer - on May 22nd.

Like the fact Sky Blue Sky is available for streaming on the Wilco site. Matt, have you listened to any Richard Buckner? Alt country genius, bar none. Lyrically, musically - delicious!
Saw the Pixies show two yrs ago (was it that long ago?) in Gatineau at the Bob Arena - good, but not great. I mean, the performance was awesome, but the sound was absolute shit - someone didn’t do their homework very well during set-up/soundcheck. C’est la vie.

Sky Blue Sky is an amazing album. Quickly became a favourite of mine.
