Gore Vidal On Cuba
I have always held Gore Vidal in very high regard, which is why I think the interview he did about his recent trip to Cuba with TruthDig worth a look. It’s very interesting.

Matt, interesting interview. It keeps touching on the big connection that has so many people sweeting in Washington. You have Cuba people rich and Venezuela cash rich. Combine those two things and watch the balance of power shift south. The interview has a link to another interesting read on Cuba’s -Medical Diplomacy- and how/why they export all those doctors.
Note your second link in your post has a typo in the hyperlink part - truthdig is pointing to turhdog.

This interview touches on so many issues that are just screaming to be delved into deeper. American journalism’s tacit complicity with American foreign policy at large, our application of the Roosevelt Corollary to the Monroe Doctrine, and our demonization of other countries, especially Cuba.
His comments at the end really remind me of every time socialized health care gets brought up amongst the circles I navigate. Every statement about socialized health care receives a retort of the form, “Well, look at Canada and how their system is screwed up.”
And ours (the U.S.) is better how? We ship the poor and uninsured from hospital to hospital while the timer is ticking. Let alone the enormous amount of preventative care that falls through the cracks that ends up born out as an enormous social cost later.
