Hospital Music
The record is sitting at number one on both Amazon.ca and iTunes Canada. Congratulations Matt. I’ve said it before, but I believe this record needs to be heard, and is, without question, some of your finest work. Glad to see that it’s taking off early.
Now, if only he could corner that goldmine Germany market. I should send him Hasselhoff’s book for tips.
Born Losers Contest Submissions
Some of you who have submitted videos in the past few days have not had your videos posted. Please don’t take that as a bad thing- we’ve been busy with the record coming out & working on a new site layout and haven’t had the time to review them and make posts. What we’ll do instead is setup a viewing/voting page listing of some sort, showing all the videos submitted.
Ghetto Blaster Footage
Thanks to the many people who have submitted ghetto blaster footage so far. The opportunity is still open to those considering submitting something. To refresh, submit video footage of yourself or someone with a ghetto blaster in any place you think of. The clip should be no more than 10 seconds long, and under 15 MB in filesize.
Any quality is acceptable, and the preferred file formats are avi, wmv, mpg, or flv.
Send the clips to admin@matthewgood.org.

Congrats Matt! Rebecca, John and I noticed the #1 on iTunes about 1 minute ago.

Ya know, living in the United States I really was not sure what kind of reach Matt still had in Canada as a solo artist. It is clear now that he is still at the top of his game and in the minds of many. Congrats.
Report
matt is #33 currently on iTunes USA… pretty impressive!
Report
#33 is up- it was #43 not a short while ago. Additionally, the numbering is not just for new releases, but for all sales in the store. So a big wow there.
Report
I am seeing #1, Matt rules!
Report
And they pulled single of the week? Would this downgrade exposure?
Report
Matt beating out Hairspray AND Bon Jovi?
and to think, he didn’t need to retread an old movie or hire a bunch of hairdressers to do it!

Yea…my daughter just returned from vacation and we still want to submit our ghetto blaster shoot. I surprised her when she got home with her copy of Hospital Music (one of two I bought - the other’s for my son’s girlfriend whose 21st birthday is Friday).
I did a little “photo journal” of my trip to make the purchase - from the drive there to the cashier who rang them through for me (he said “you’re the first person to ever ask me that” when I asked to take the picture. I had fun with it…as you can tell, I felt that after the build up to this day, my long anticipated purchase deserved a grand finale. It’s a good day.

I remember in an interview way back in the day with Muchmusic, your were smoking a cigarette in a Whistler hotel room with long unkept hair and wearing a lumberjack shirt and discussing your musical influences. You were talking about the Pixies and said something along the lines of “I listened to them religiously and was like, am I the only one who knows about this band?”
Well, for ten years I have been listening to your music religiously and saying the same thing. Finally, I hope the masses realize the depth and pure harmony you have to offer. From Underdogs to Hospital Music, its been a treat to run out and buy your latest album on opening day…
Thanks Matt!

I totally thought that ghetto blaster idea was scrapped, I had better get on that.. getting a ghetto blaster thing.
Report
Congrats sir.

That’s awesome with regards to Hospital Music’s standing.
I agree– it is an album that needs to be heard. It has so much depth and compassion and honesty, I really don’t think I’ve heard anything like it before.
Oh, when is the last day you will accept ghetto blaster footage?
Report
Congratulations to Matt and his crew who helped create Hospital Music.

Regarding the video contest, I think there should also be Matt’s pick as well as the vote… maybe even Mug’s pick too… what do you say?

The Blaster Footage cutoff is indefinite right now, so keep ‘em coming.

I could not be more proud of a person that admire, and hold so much respect for as a person as well as an artist.
A person who: has produced some of the most beautiful sounds that have made me happy when I was sad, wrote some of the most memorable lyrics that I hold, someone who has influenced me to be a little more artistic in my day to day life (ie. learning to play acoustic guitar, write my own lyrics, etc.)
Despite it being said before ‘the most personal album’ this will hold a large part in many places hearts as well.
Your success could not come to a more deserving guy, and it brings a smile to my face.
Raise a drink Mr. Good and Co. as well as you Mr. Mugford. Truely a masterpiece, and I thank you for it
Cheers,
Brett

In some ways I feel behind the times beause I haven’t hooked up with iTunes yet in order to obtain this latest effort. Then I realized why; and it’s the same reason I didn’t listen to it when it was on the site (as difficult as that was!)… When Maple Music sends me my CD down here in the states, I want to be able to get in my car and put it in the CD player. Matt and his thoughts along with me and my thoughts, safely tucked away in a four-wheeled, mobile, unassuming petri dish for the mind and soul. You’d think that might get crowded but it’s the best way I’ve found to fully absorb and appreciate every bit of it. For now I wait. Confident that it will be worth it. Congrats, and thank you.

Congratulations Matt and everyone else involved with the album, it is spectacular.

Congratulations Mr Good for that.
I loved the new songs the first time I heard them and can hardly wait to have my copy of the CD sent overseas.
Quoting slater2000:
Glad that the unpleasant “Limbo Dance”r comes to your mind when you think of Germany and not some unpleasant AND dangerous stuff like neonazism, 2-class-society, unresolved immigration/integration politics, aso. Anyway, Mr Good, you’re most welcome.

I’ve been one of the few incredibly lucky people to have had the opportunity to hear Hospital Music for a couple of months now… and to be honest, one of the hardest things was keeping it to myself… not sharing it with others… it is so damn good that you want to shout about it from the rooftops… Just last week I was walking around in Amsterdam in a downpour… I could not have asked for a better soundtrack on my IPod… Congrats Matt…
May you finally receive the accolades you so deserve…

The album is amazing. I bought it last night after work and listened to it until bed time. You are an amazing artist and I am soooooooo looking forward to seeing you perform on the 18th of October!
Congratulations Matt! Kudos to you and your crew!
Report
…I seriously have nothing to say in response to this album. It’s that amazing.
I was a bit worried about this release. It seemed that Matt was going on out a bit of a limb and was doing not necessarily something new, but something more powerful. I usually have a problem listening to albums in full, which is why I have shuffle on all the time. The first minute of Champions of Nothing alone made me turn off shuffle and tune in to this breathtaking effort.
It seems it’s moved up to #19 in the iTunes US store.

I listened to my entire Matt Good collection yesterday at work in preparation for picking up Born Losers last night. And I have to say that this album is definitely some of your best and most powerful work (and to me, that’s saying something because you’ve done some great stuff).
Congrats Matt! I greatly look forward to seeing you in Ottawa in October.

Congrats, and many thanks, to Matt, Pat, Rod and everybody else involved.

Forget about the German market! Try to the Japanese market! Just the “I hear Matt Good is still an asshole” t-shirt would sell millions! ;-)
Anyway, congratulations on the figures!
And yay! I still have time to stitch together 15 seconds with a ghetto blaster.
Report
Congrats Matt on the album being #1
Report
slater2000, now why’d you go and take my german comment and make it serious? Sorry if it didn’t give you giggle and instead you thought of the political and social struggle that Germany has endured in the past century.
And, with regard to thanking the fans, I’ll leave that to Matt.

Number one so quickly. That’s awesome. Congratulations!

Hey Dale,
For the Ghetto blaster footage,
With all the footage you’ve received so far, how many different places have been used in the shots? I’m trying to think of something that maybe not many other’s have thought of yet.. any ideas? (Can’t really have a good idea yet as I don’t know what you guys have received so far)

How would you prefer I sent it? Gmail or something?
And which address..

Yup, I’ve been listening to it pretty much non-stop since yesterday morning on repeat. Of course, I’ve ripped it to uncompressed wav files, and it’s totally worth the 630 MB that it takes up on my mp3 player.
When I got it home last night, I cranked it on the stereo for a bit and sang along to the first few songs. My house guests noted how well I knew every syllable, and I was like “I’ve been listening to this non-stop for WEEKS already”. It’s just such a feeling of release to finally have it in glorious CD quality and be able to crank it out loud!
A good time to be a Good fan, for sure!
Report
As far as I’m concerned, musically, Hospital Music has already kicked the crap out of Avalanche, which is amazing because that album itself was spectacular. Regardless of commercial success I think it’s safe to say that Matt more than exceeded all of our expectations and made a record he’s openly proud of at the same time. How many times do artists truly deliver either of those things let alone both at once? That hardcore fans are even debating it’s place as “his best work ever” and that it’s climbing the charts is all just gravy.
I thought it would be good, like another White Light, some solid tracks and that would be it. But this is just ridiculous. I can’t stop listening to my CD copy and I’ve already been addicted to the stream for a month. I woke up at 730 in the morning with a hangover just to crank it on my stereo. Never done that before.
Report
And I just noticed the “In Memory of” line in the liner notes.
Nice touch.

Dale, I found your Hasselhoff remark funny and am serious with my reply at the same time. If he had been a popstar in, say, Bangladesh, nobody would ever relate that fact to Bangladesh because the country is known in the world to have more serious problems than D.H. having been a popstar back in the 80’s. If you want, you can rather take my comment as criticism to my fellow Germans which is of course no topic for debate on this website.
´With regard to the “thanking”, I apology for my comment. I’m always irritated when people congratulate each other for things they are not directly involved in (like congratulating a fan for his team’s championship victory). And as I said before, this is no miscredit for the fantastic CD, it’s just that it’s onto others to make it No.1 on itunes/amazon/… . But that’s a quirk of mine, never mind.

Congrat’s Matt :)

When I picked up my copy at the store, they were playing it and I sang along quietly while I waited in line at the cash. I was so excited.
My kiddies rolled their eyes and said “Mom, you know all the words and you haven’t even bought it yet.”
I love to be passionate about great music, I love that Matt Good continues to make it for us, I love that there’s thousands of us that feel the same way, and more out there that are catching on.
Way to go on the success, it is well deserved.

I was a little surprised at how cheap it was at Sunrise Records when I picked up my copy. $11.99 or something? New release push, I guess, but still, wow.
Talking to other fans at the Edge studios the other day it seemed that the fact that the album streamed on the website last month had actually made them more delighted to go out and buy it (I felt the same), and it had helped them turn friends and coworkers onto the music so that hopefully they’ll be hitting the store too. I think it’s fair to call it an effective marketing tool at this point.
And, of course, congrats Matt.
