Peru Rocked By Massive Quake
An earthquake measuring 8.0 on the Richter Scale has devastated parts of Peru and, thus far, killed some 430+ people. According to the BBC, the Mayor of Pico has claimed that 70% of his city has been destroyed, and that 200 people are buried in the rubble of a church. Imperial has also reported devastating damage, with some 80% of the adobe houses believed to have collapsed.
Aftershocks registered as strong at 6.3, and a state of national emergency has been declared by President Alan Garcia, who expects the death toll to climb as daylight breaks and rescue efforts are launched in earnest.

Very tragic.
…and from the ’sad yet not surprising’ file: we were watching CNN last night and all they did was talk about Elvis… all night… even on Headline News… not one mention of this.

Oxfam is taking donations to help out
August 16th, 2007 at 6:08 pm
what can we do to help?
August 16th, 2007 at 6:25 pm
This is horrible.

Are there any places you could recommend and link to for donations Matt? I think a lot of us would be interested in doing so but it’s hard to tell where our money goes with certain organizations. I just want to help in any way I can.

I even have a hard time grasping the scale of this. When you see the devastation it makes you wonder where to begin. Just to begin will be a good start. The rest will come.

I heard about this earlier today- how horrible. I hope they get the help they need soon.

Thanks for the link, Eric. I think Oxfam is the only organization mentioned so far. But I’m sure other organizations will officially start to solicit donations in the coming days.
Meanwhile, it looks like Canada will provide $2,000,000 in aid to Peru.

The U.S. has pledged a whopping $100,000 in emergency aid. More to come, they say.
Look over there! Elvis is still dead!!!
In other news, I just read a piece in the Globe and Mail stating that Americans spent $1.4 billion last year on
over-the-counter tooth-whitening products. New Orleans… what? Peru… what?
