Start A Revolution

I want to take a moment to single out the efforts of the people at iTunes in the US that have, I believe, done something rather revolutionary with regards to an unsigned artist in that country, that artist being me.

I am lucky enough to currently have the single of the week on the US iTunes store, which is a free download to those in the US. But what has been incredible is that the album itself is currently the #19 most purchased record on iTunes USA, and last night climbed to #17 for a time. To me, that is simply unbelievable.

Why this is revolutionary is that no label was involved, nor were the usual difficulties of working with one present while putting the release for iTunes together. They contacted me directly some months ago and proposed the idea of releasing it on the same day in the US as in Canada, something that has never happened in my entire career. Their belief in the record, and the fact that they were fans of my work, speaks to the reality of what can be accomplished through unconventional means utilizing new technologies without having to endure the resistance of those that haven’t the foresight to realize their importance (iTunes is, in fact, the third largest retailer in the United States).

Thus, I would like to thank Dave, Ryan, and the entire iTunes Editorial Team for making this happen.

Also, for those of you in the UK, the album is also available on the iTunes UK store as well.

Re: Facebook, Etc

Since the release of the record there has been an enormous influx of friend requests. Please forgive us if we haven’t gotten to yours yet, it’s been a busy week.

  1. Skeeter Says:

Congratulations Matt! I’ve purchased the album twice off itunes now and am awaiting the autographed cd from maplemusic to come in the mail. See you in Buffalo, NY! Hopefully Kingston, ON as well if u find a venue there.

  2. Dale Mugford Says:

As an addendum, the folks at iTunes worked flawlessly and timely with me to establish the iTunes radio stream, and I wanted to recognize Ryan Dixon as well, who was a pleasure to deal with throughout the process.

  3. Duane Storey Says:

That’s awesome.. You hit #5 alternative last night as well for a brief time in the US. The fact that it hit #19 and has been relatively stable there is also pretty amazing. I’ve also started seeing (in the last day or so) “People who bough so and so also bought Matthew Good,” so that might help it even further.

I had a few friends in the US that where going to blog about the release, and when it went front page on iTunes with the single of the week, they were all pretty floored. So yeah, I think it’s pretty revolutionary, and it’s obviously translated into the recognition that the album deserves down south.

  4. zackmitchell Says:

iTunes really is amazing. Anyways, I’m with Skeeter, still holding out hope for that Kingston show, hope you guys can get something worked out with a venue.

  5. Matt Perry Says:

Thats great news, I have been keeping an eye out on the charts after purchasing it myself as well, congrats Matt.

Saw you at 106.9 The Bear and can’t wait to see the tour here in Ottawa as well as in Montreal, keep up the great work!

  6. Stephen B. Says:

    Congrats Matt!
Can’t wait for the Edmonton shows. Hell, they sold out so fast you could book another on your way back through town.

  7. alan Says:

The really cool thing is if you read some of the comments left on the US store Born Losers single and Hospital Music pages. Theres quite a few “never heard of this guy before but it’s awesome music” comments.

  8. whoisqaz Says:

great news, itunes is the future of music but having it in your hands is always great. the guitarist buckethead did his last album without labels. he created “in search of the” which is a set of 13 albums full of great tunes and whoever ordered it got a burnt cd straight from the artist with a album cover designed by the artes at that point in time. no 2 covers are ever alike. thats as close to cutting out the middle man as u can get. i guess him having it delivred to your door is the next thing :)

great news either way, cant wait for the Montreal show.

  9. Jeffery Simpson Says:

Congrats on that. With your label, Universal, talking about pulling out of iTunes or at least playing games with the store as opposed to going the EMI route and embracing it (and selling higher quality DMR free music for a premium) I’m glad you’ve had good experience with the US store.

  10. HalifaxRedemption Says:

I enjoyed that interview. Thanks for sharing it on here.

  11. Vince Says:

i bought it in stores, but i’ll buy it again on itunes just because “the boy come home” is such a good song. (next single perhaps?)

    *cough*london show*cough*

  12. CortexBomb48 Says:

I’m not surprised that the album is doing well in the US, if anything, I have been waiting for Matt to gain greater exposure in the US for years, and I chalk up the lack of recognition mainly to inadequate label support. I think this is particularly true of the recent solo releases which contain many songs which are very relevant for US listeners

My fondest hope is that Matt’s success will be big enough to eventually support a US tour. I am fortunate to live close to Ontario, so I can still make it out for tours, but I empathize with the plight of other American fans who live further from the border.

  13. stephanie Says:

You’re #1 on the HMV canada charts if that means anything to you. haha

we completely sold out on tuesday at my store.

    congrats!
Its good to see that you are making such a dent in the US

  14. Patrick Pitt Says:

    fantastic

  15. ErikH Says:

I saw you on “Entertainment Tonight Canada” last night, which was the only thing, I have ever seen worth spending the five minutes sitting down to watch from that particular program.

  16. thethrowaway Says:

    awesome! :)

  17. Lisa_02 Says:

    *cough*london show*cough*
I second that for a London show!!
I have also enjoyed the couple of interviews you did (CTV) and The Edge in Toronto!
Getting my copy of your CD tonight!! Can’t wait!

  18. Jordan Says:

That was a good interview Matt. That guy seemed real interested, which is rare to see.

Getting the album tommorow!, i’ve had to search my house for my A&B gift certificate, haha.

  19. debn8r Says:

That is sooo awesome, Matt! I’m so happy for you about this CD, and happy for me to be able to listen to it! hehe

I think The Devil’s in your Details is going to be a HUGE hit too, I hope you’re releasing it as a single! It brings tears to my eyes it’s so good! Black Helicopter and 99% of us is Failure are fantastic too; I totally bawl over 99%, it reminds me of when my best friend in the world had cancer two years ago…:(

Hell, I love the whole CD!! There’s nobody more deserving than you of its success. (Ok, I’m done gushing for now. :P)

  20. strator71 Says:

just grabbed it from itunes. off to listen. and thanks for the music.

  21. Yaxche Says:

Record sounds great, but no DRM free version so I can’t purchase from I-Tunes, unfortunately.

I guess I’ll order from amazon.ca… need to find a few more things to buy so they don’t kill me on shipping, though.

  22. Rebecca Says:

That’s so awesome - good job everyone!

  23. chimpat Says:

Congrats Matt. As a longtime fan from the US, I can honestly say how great it was to get home from work and simply download your album in a matter of minutes. Don’t think I’ve ever gotten any of your albums on the same day they’ve been released in Canada.

    How about a NYC show?

  24. angelboo Says:

I for one am very thankful that itunes US had such a revolutionary idea!!! I would also like to thank them for making the album available to the US on the 31st, I took full advantage of the opportunity that morning!!! I now am awaiting the release in the states on the 6th to get the CD itself!!!

Congratulations!! I am so happy for you!!! Cheers

  25. James17930 Says:

    The CD is dead.

Direct digital distribution is the way to go.

  26. Monkey Says:

That was a really great interview, thanks for posting it.

  27. betterhappierme Says:

I agree, great interview. Your music always stirs up something inside me, but this album is in a league all of it’s own. Best album ever. Thanks Matt !!!!!

  28. cummer Says:

Does that mean all the money from the Itunes US sales, gets split between you and ITunes Respectively or does Universal get some of that?

  29. arthmail Says:

As a side note, the degree of professionalism on the Canada AM show was awesome. The host, not sure of his name, is either a fan or really did his background work. He also seemed to have a great deal of respect for Matt and his courage in speaking out. It was one of the better interviews that i have seen. Great, great interview.

Alas, i have the chance to be in on the session Matt is doing in Edmonton tomorrow, but i can’t make it. I live now in Calgary, and if i didn’t own my own store i would just claim sick days. One of my friends won tickets, and I CAN”T GO. Little disappointing.

Matt, if you read this, there is an oriental guy with spiky hair and two cds hoping to get a signature. For the love of all things holy, please sign both. Thanks in advance…hopefully.

  30. sevenxteen Says:
The CD is dead.

I disagree. One of the best feelings in the world is getting your hands on a CD which you have been dying to get, ripping open the packaging and looking all through the liner notes- the smell, the look and the feel; it’s amazing. With digital music you just don’t get that amazing feeling. I buy CDs and then upload them into my iTunes. This way I get the best of both worlds.

  31. Pazuzu Says:
The CD is dead.

Direct digital distribution is the way to go.
I hope not. One of the simple joys in my life is to lounge around my place with earphones and a cd booklet, reading the lyrics as I fall into the first listen of an album. In my opinion, it is a tragedy to produce a compact disc without lyrics. Unless the artist/band doesn’t have a choice.

Another tragedy is going into the Extras feature on a DVD and discovering only subtitle options…

  32. spring90 Says:
The CD is dead.

Direct digital distribution is the way to go.
I do download music, But if I like the album I downloaded, I buy it.

I have a CD rack that holds 220 albums, and it’s full. Of albums that I bought. I downloaded some Matthew Good Band tracks of PureTracks before I was really into MG, and then went out and bought the albums…

I also enjoy being able to sit around with the booklets from the CD’s, and when I can’t find something to listen to, all my CD’s are sitting there and I can point my finger, and that’s the album I’ll listen to.

  33. goldmourn Says:

I think it’s fantastic what iTunes did. Obviously this is a revolution in music. It’s exciting to think of the possibilities and potential this has for you as you continue your music career. Personally, I see even more fulfilling success for you in a way that was different than before - more real, more impact.

Having said that, I picked up my cd today from the store and I’m very happy with it. I’ll still be purchasing music from stores for a long time to come as long as the medium is available .

  34. leemar1978 Says:

Thats awesome Matt, if anyone deserves to do well it’s you.

  35. Allie Says:

Just got my copy of Hospital Music in the mail, and I’m enjoying it immensely. I love what’s happening on US itunes and could not be happier for you, especially for American fans like me who have easy access to your album. I still needed a hard copy to be satisfied, though. haha.

By the way, I really loved the interview!

  36. thethrowaway Says:

ahhh just got a call and my mom picked up the cd for me today so its on its way home right now!!!!
    too excited~~~

  37. Natnewt Says:

Yes that was a very open and honest interview Matt and I’m glad your strong enough to talk about your experiences. And more importantly learn from them and see your life in a whole new light.

  38. deb Says:

I’m very happy for you…you deserve the success that you’re seeing…you’ve worked long and hard and, despite some very serious setbacks, have managed to continue to put out quality work.

That goes for those that you surround yourself with…obviously very talented individuals.

Congratulations and keep doing what you do. We’re behind you all the way.

  39. young305 Says:

I think alot of it has to do with how great the record is….having Born Losers be free opened it up to alot of people, many of which wound up buying it, which is great to hear.

I also wondered….is there a way to see how many “copies” HM has sold on iTunes so far?

  40. dwf Says:

Hmm, I haven’t been able to get the CTV thing to play on this Mac. Oh well.

  41. young305 Says:

I just watched the interview…it was good stuff, no pun of course.

I’m sure along with the emails you received from people around the world, as you mentioned during the interview, I’m willing to bet the album itself will also help many people.

  42. andy Says:

congrats dude - you deserve it.

keep up the good work, and i’ll see you at massey hall in october!

  43. billybadass Says:

This just in…………… it turns out the USA loves Matt Goods music………………….tour to follow???

    Congrats Matt

  44. work_to_elevate Says:

is underdgos on Itunes US? anyone know? yes, tour. Cleveland. thanks.

  45. HumanDecency Says:

Real muscians sell out to record labels. How will you afford to be arrogant now?

I’ve never actually been on I-Tunes, but I guess I will have to check it out for the new album. I have a Rhapsody account and it seems to me that I don’t steal music nearly as much anymore. The old adage must be true: piracy didn’t kill the CD - it was lack of mobility and artist quality.

  46. ranaldo Says:

bring your sorry ass down here
i mean fuck you’re friends with JR.
    come back to NC !

great job on the new album

  47. ncguitarplyr Says:

i didn’t like anything about itunes before, now i like 1 thing, but thats 1 more than before

  48. Max Says:

It’s awesome to hear the CD is doing well on the US store, especially when it’s up against such mainstream corporate music. Hopefully you’ll do a US tour soon.

  49. Lisa_02 Says:

Just got the Cd!! Its AMAZING!
    Congrats Matt!!!!!

  50. tiffanychantelle Says:

I’m really enjoying the cd. Benefits of having it as compared to buying it off iTunes? You can’t sign my computer :P

  51. Ugly Says:
Hmm, I haven’t been able to get the CTV thing to play on this Mac. Oh well.
Neither can I, and I made sure my Flip4Mac was updated and I installed WMP 9 for Mac, too.

    Sucky. :(

  52. Ugly Says:

Just snagged this from CTV’s Help file:

“‘Is CTV Broadband supported on Macintosh?’”

Although CTV.ca is optimized for the PC systems as described above, the streaming video can work with most Mac systems.

PowerPC powered Macs – we suggest using Internet Explorer and Windows Media Player 9.

Newer Intel powered Macs – you must run Safari in “Rosetta” mode, with Windows Media Player 9.

Note – CTV.ca broadband will not work with the Flip4Mac plugin at this time.”

    Boooooooourns.

  53. pea Says:

i have done everything i can to try to play this on the mac — haven’t downloaded IE, yet, eee. *sigh*

  54. whynotpickles Says:

I also can’t see the interview on my Mac. Can someone post it here in another format, or on Youtube? I noticed someone has posted Matt playing Born Losers on Canada a.m. but there is no interview included.

  55. victoria Says:

And this is just the beginning Matt.
From the first listen of the album stream at the start of the month, I knew it was going to have a lot of success early on. I bought the album for my father, who is new to your music, and we’ve both discussed it quite a bit in high regards since it’s release on Tuesday. He’s a huge fan of the Dead Kennedys, and was more than pleased of your amazing version of Moon Over Marin.
Congratulations, Matt. You’ve battled a lot over the past year and a bit, and I’m glad to see things are starting to look up for you. You’re a very strong and extremely talented man, and I wish you much deserved success and happiness in the future.

  56. Duane Storey Says:

For those of you having troubles on the Mac, I had some too.

    1) install Flip4Mac
    2) open QuickTime manually
    3) in the menu, choose File/OpenURL
    4) go here mms://ctvbroadcast.ctv.ca/video/2007/07/31/ctvvideologger2_500kbps_2007_07_31_1185896009.wmv

  57. Ugly Says:
i have done everything i can to try to play this on the mac — haven’t downloaded IE, yet, eee. *sigh*
I did - don’t. All it did was hang up and give me the Spinny Beach Ball of Death.

Perhaps we should all send some Feedback to CTV and politely request that they not ask Mac users to jump through hoops and download antiquated, unsupported browsers (from 3rd parties, no less) to access their content. I have a PowerPC Mac Mini and tried everything they suggested for PowerPC Mac users. I imagine at least a few of you have the newer Intel Macs and are still having no luck.

Anyhoo, forgot to even address the subject at hand - It’s great to see the album garner so much interest in a “new” market. Congrats and jeeeorrrrb well done to all involved.

  58. hunterjrj Says:

    CHA-CHING

  59. Shane Says:

Again, a big congrats to Matt and everyone else involved in the making and promoting of this record. It truly is a marvelous piece of work.

  60. Ugly Says:

Duane - you rock the party. Thanks. Worked like a charm. Still sent Feedback to CTV, though. I can’t believe they’re telling people to download IE for Mac. Sheesh.

  61. Marcella Says:

Congratulations on your American success, Matt! Wonderful to hear about how this record’s release is turning out so positive despite setbacks. Rock on!

  62. kanji Says:

Um, thats what I tell people….Ugh, Macs….*shakes head*

Just wanted to pass along a thank you to Matt for the record. Just picked it up today and love every bit of it….glad it is selling well, hate seeing artists like yourself and others (David Usher pops to mind) that put out such good music and get no attention while your generic manufactured rock and pop music gets shoved down our throats and generally eaten up by the public….

  63. allison Says:

    hey matt
congrads on your album, I’ve purchased it on the 31st and have continued to listen to it.
Really is one of your best albums put together, although all of your music is incredible.
Can’t wait to see you play in edmonton. The tickets SOLD OUT unbelivably fast
i missed the first show, and out of my disbelief kept clicking and re clicking to try and hope
that maybe more tickets were to come. Luckily 5 minutes later a second show popped up
and i was able to get front row tickets. You could seriously put in another show here if you
    wanted to.
congradulations once again for your amazing record.

  64. bunster10 Says:

    THANK YOU, DUANE!!!

Yes, the interview was well done. Seamus did an excellent job.

  65. TimWhatTheNow Says:

I love the new album. I remember back when Much Music was the only exposure we had here in the states of your music. Ever since the first time I heard Hello Time Bomb, I’ve been a fan. I love the new CD and glad the US is finally taking notice to one of the most amazing musicians to come about inthe past 20 years. The new CD is incredible and I can’t stop listening to it! I can’t really ever ask for a show in North Carolina, but I can dream, can’t I?

    Keep on Rocking Matt!

  66. dmk Says:

Congratulations! Matt Good and revolutionary in the same breath…not a huge surprise ;-) .

  67. Stephen K Says:

Congratulations Matt. Sounds like the US could finally be waking up to you. I see good things for you ahead.

  68. ericfromohio Says:

    Matt

  69. rallen Says:

    Congrats Matt:

You should be proud as I believe that this is your best and most haunting work yet!

I will see you in BFLO!

  70. ericfromohio Says:

Matt, Congrats. See you in buffalo. Good to see Cleveland show. Maybe. Regards Eric

  71. ericfromohio Says:

Matt, Went to see Besnard Lakes last week in Cleveland. Great Band. Maybe you can stop by. Regards, Eric

  72. theoutsideworld Says:

    no, really, i did

congratulations on a fine effort indeed….

    great interview, matt!

  74. billybadass Says:

HOLY SHIT !!!!!!!! #6 on US itunes alternative albums section!!!!!!!!!! yeah

  75. jtathaizzosh Says:

just in regards to the canada am interview….. i am fully effected from chemical imbalances in my brains as well. its really really cool that you got to spend so much time on national television talking some truths about depression/bipolarity/anxiety/drugs and the such. seeing someone that i look up to so much be taken down by, then rise up again from, the same sorts of things that i have to go through in my everyday life. I had no idea about that whole adavan thing, i take them sometimes as well, and i have found that with my anxiety i can take a ridiculous amount of them. Like 3 or 4 at a time , while at work…. anyways, keep up the good fight, see you in victoria next month.

  76. Brie Says:

I bought it at like 1 am that morning from iTunes US and I’m so happy it was available that way. I plan to get the CD too but the instant gratification is not something I’m used to with Canadian albums.

  77. montypyt Says:

People don’t believe me when I say how big it is that Itunes U.S. put you as the free download of the week! I love it!

My goal is to have you come down to Seattle and do a live in-studio performance @ KEXP.

You so have to check out that station! It’s a publicly funded station that streams world wide and gets huge U.S. support, because no other stations match up to their format. Check them out!

I would be your tour guide :)

Kuddos Matt on the early release success of your album that was a product of very trying times for you.

    Cheers,

    J

  78. James L Says:

Congrats mate, I am very glad to hear that things like this can and do still happen. I also happy to report that my entire office has picked up a copy of your album, I picked it up on release day and was playing it a lunch and everyone was more then impressed. However we did lose about 45 minutes worth of production time :D

    Thanks for a great record.

    Cheers

  79. DrewEsq Says:

I love iTunes. Use it every day, buy from it every week.

My only complaint with the way the new CD is offered is the details of the Single of the Week. When I downloaded the CD, it lists all the songs but “Born Losers” as appearing on the album “Hospital Music”. For “Born Losers,” it lists it appearing on “Single of The Week,” which in turn puts it out of order and not in the CD “Hospital Music.” Of course, you can manually go in and change the properties of each song. But it’s still a little annoying. Not sure if anyone else had that problem. This is just a minor quirk about iTunes.

Great CD with some great songs. And I love that the CD was so easy to get this time with iTunes. As an American fan, it became a bit more work to get Matt’s music in the past. Not anymore. Congratulations on a great CD.

  80. andregiant Says:

I got it from itunes, and then my sister went over to Toronto (we live in Buffalo) for a concert, so i had her pick me up the hard copy too. laff.

  81. James17930 Says:

Just watched the interview — agree it’s very good. I love how articulate Matt is — his explanations of things and his stories are so concise that I really enjoy listening to them.

    Yes — I’m a slave to concision.

  82. satchboogieca Says:

I picked up the CD at HMV Wednesday night and listened to it all day yesterday.

    I really really like it!

It is very much worthy of the ratings on iTunes and HMV charts.

Directed at anyone who can explain…

I don’t understand Mr Good’s comment about being “unsigned” in the US. Does this mean if you are unsigned you have no distribution in the US? What about other countries?

I recall from my cassette days, when I was so bored I’d read everything on the cassette, I would see ” Records in the UK, >, >

  83. ericz Says:

i think the interview is great matt. that the show would be open to talking about the issues of depression, bi-polarism, etc. instead of “rockstar” stuff or ask you an inane question and then make you play your single off the album is pretty cool.

i didn’t realize that the US iTunes was going to put the album up so i’m heading there next to get some new mg tunes.

  84. satchboogieca Says:

I figured out why my posts are chopped off…

Sorry, I forgot this is HTML based and I have to watch out for special characters.

    I’m a C/Assembly coder, not HTML.

But at least my questions made it.

  85. wheredoescouragecomefrom???!!!!!! Says:

  86. Anna Says:

Just watched the Canada AM interview-

How refreshing to see actually relevant and thought out questions being asked- a nice break from the “Sooo ahh Matt I hear you have a new record coming out, what’s it called again?” questions. So much more important to get the story behind the music.

Love how in the end, he congraultated Matt for his courage- couldn’t have ended it better myself.

  87. andyb Says:

Just a quick note on your new album.

3 weeks ago Friday 13th July,a real good friend of mine commited suicide in Cagary.”Duker” was 32 years old and a huge MGB fan, never missed any of your shows in Ontario.
5 days ago,a friend of my sons who was 18 did the same………

So what is the point of this comment you ask ????
I buy your new CD,get back to the car, open it up…..the first thing I see are the words “Gone away boys,We’re gone away”

    Gave me the chills….freaky

where the hell did this album come from?

    Talk about make my day!

I saw the featured song on iTunes but wasn’t able to listen in Canada… I assumed it was an old song to push some of Matt’s work in the states…

I’ve never downloaded from iTunes before - but when I saw it was a new album and read the reviews I couldn’t resist…

I’ve been listening to MG for 11 years… through various stages of my life, and now as a new father I am excited to have a new set of songs that’ll be playing as the soundtrack of these new memories I am making…

Haven’t heard them all yet - but this is obviously a very spiritual and honest album… I can’t wait to surprise my wife tomorrow on our road trip…

    Thanks Matt- enjoy the lake.

I am very sorry for the loss of your friend and your son’s friend.
