Fast And Furious

I’ve had extremely limited access to the net since my day off in Montreal, so I’m trying to play a little catch up. It’s 7 o’clock here in PEI and I’m due on stage at 10:30 and haven’t eaten anything yet today, so I’m going to have to make this short and sweet. Below are a few links to stories of interest that I’ve come across. Had I more time, I’d comment on them in detail…

Six Iraqi groups team up to drive Americans out.
U.S. attack kills 15 civilians — including 9 kids.
Belarus to ‘build nuclear plant’ (don’t expect any international outcry).
Only Now, the Full Horror of Burmese Junta’s Repression of Monks Emerges.
Priest Convicted in Argentine “Dirty War” Tribunal.
Blackwater faces war crimes inquiry after killings in Iraq.
Blackwater Guards Fired at Fleeing Cars, Soldiers Say.
Watchdog of C.I.A. Is Subject of C.I.A. Inquiry.

Still one of the biggest oxymorons I know of: “friendly-fire”

Yet another: “we have another problem we can’t fix, or don’t want to acknowledge, soooo…….we are going to have another ‘hearing’ “.

    Whatever happened to “doing”?

The Halifax show was awesome. I was hoping to hear Alert Status Red but was more than happy to hear some of the other “hits” in your acoustic set. You asked about the Canadian subs and someone shouted we have 5. Not true. We have 4. And one of the two in Halifax harbour (the one you saw) has just had a refit cancelled indefinitely due to a plan to get “new” subs. The other had a fire while coming from London (thanks to the Brits for selling two useless metal tubes, and to the Chretien Liberals for signing off on the purchase!) that killed a 20-odd year old officer. It’s refit has been indefinitely postponed to bring it up to sailing snuff. So we spent millions on two subs that have yet to see any active use with plans to buy more and sweep these purchases likely under the rug.
Also…a question for you…who is this Woo person and why do drunk, stumbling fools call out to this individual at your concert when you are in the middle of a sustained note?

SICKNESS, “ABSURD” DOJ PROSECUTION FORCE SCIENTIST TO PLEAD IN PRECEDENT-SETTING CASE

Buffalo, NY – Today in Federal District Court, Dr. Robert Ferrell, Professor of Human Genetics at the University of Pittsburgh Graduate School of Public Health, under tremendous pressure, pled guilty to lesser charges rather than facing a prolonged trial for federal charges of “mail fraud” and “wire fraud” in a surreal post-PATRIOT Act legal case that has attracted worldwide attention.

Bob is a 27 year survivor of non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma which has reoccurred numerous times. He has also had malignant melanoma. Since this whole nightmare began, Bob has had two minor strokes and a major stroke which required months of rehabilitation.”

Dr. Ferrell added that her husband was indicted just as he was preparing to undergo a painful and dangerous autologous stem cell transplant, the second in 7 years.

Dr. Ferrell’s colleague Dr. Steven Kurtz, founder of the internationally acclaimed art and theater group Critical Art Ensemble, was illegally detained and accused of “bioterrorism” by the U.S. government in 2004 stemming from his acquisition from Dr. Ferrell of harmless bacteria used in several of Critical Art Ensemble’s educational art projects. After a costly investigation lasting several months and failing to provide any evidence of “bioterrorism,” the Department of Justice instead brought charges of “mail fraud” and “wire fraud” against Kurtz and Ferrell. Under the USA PATRIOT Act, the maximum penalty for these charges has increased from 5 years to 20. (For more information about the case, please see “Background to the Case” below or http://caedefensefund.org)

    JURIDICAL ART CRITICISM?

The government is vigorously attempting to prosecute two defendants in a case where no one has been injured, and no one has been defrauded. The materials found in Dr. Kurtz’s house were obtained legally and used safely by the artist. After three and a half years of investigation and prosecution, the case still revolves around $256 worth of common science research materials that were used in art works by a highly visible and respected group of artists. These art works were commissioned and hosted by cultural institutions worldwide where they had been safely displayed in museums and galleries with absolutely no risk to the public.

The Government has consistently framed this case as an issue of public safety, but the materials used by Critical Art Ensemble are widely available, can be purchased by anyone from High School science supply catalogues, and are regularly mailed.

    BACKGROUND TO THE CASE

The legal nightmare of renowned scientist Dr. Robert Ferrell and artist and professor Dr. Steven Kurtz began in May 2004. Professor Kurtz and his late wife Hope were founding members of the internationally exhibited art and theater collective Critical Art Ensemble. Over the past decade cultural institutions worldwide have commissioned and hosted Critical Art Ensemble’s participatory theater projects that help the general public understand biotechnology and the many issues surrounding it. In May 2004 the Kurtzes were preparing a project examining genetically modified agriculture for the Massachusetts Museum of Contemporary Art, when Hope Kurtz died of heart failure. Detectives who responded to Professor Kurtz’s 911 call deemed the couple’s art suspicious, and called the FBI. Within hours the artist was illegally detained as a suspected “bioterrorist” as dozens of federal agents in Hazmat suits sifted through his work and impounded his computers, manuscripts, books, his cat, and even his wife’s body.

Thanks for posting the article on the Dirty War.
It’s interesting, the article mentioned the association of mothers (Asociación Madres de la Plaza de Mayo). They still have a short, maybe 30 min., “march” once I week on Thursdays in the Plaza de Mayo square. They don’t actually march, they just have tables, and sell things like little pins and shirts with their logo and random stuff like second hand books. The ladies are all pretty old now and fragile looking, for the most part, and were quite friendly, of course open to speak about their cause.
It has become a popular tourist attraction in Buenos Aires, but at the same time I think it’s good because they are raising awareness to foreigners. I never learned about South American history in school (I don’t know if that’s just a Quebec education thing?), so I had not heard of the Dirty War until earlier this year while in Argentina. One of the mothers I spoke too explained that the government still won’t admit to its involvement in the war so the mothers don’t acknowledge that their missing children are dead. They would like to know where they ended up, whether dead or alive. Clearly, if bodies were thrown over into the Río de la Plata, their remains will never be found, as they would just have been carried out to the Atlantic, but I think if the government admitted to their wrongdoing, these people would be at peace with the disappearances. If no one talks about it except a lot of old ladies, then the government won’t do anything about it. It’s been almost 30 years now.

One other note on the article, how crazy is it that Von Wernich was wearing a bullet proof vest and behind bullet proof glass?! Talk about being hated and wanted dead!
