Tonight, The Hour
Tonight I’ll be appearing on The Hour with George Stroumboulopoulos. I’ve been interviewed by George numerous times over the years, dating back to when he used to be on The Edge in Toronto, not to mention just shooting the shit over drinks now and then when I’m back East, so it should be fun.
Oh – and by drugs they mean the prescription kind, not the illegal do-them-in-the-bathroom-at-a-club kind - just so we’re clear. I realize that it would be far more rock and roll of me if illicit drugs were involved, but unfortunately that’s not the case. Sorry to disappoint.
Then again, addiction’s addiction, and Ativan certainly counts.

Never a disappointment!!! : ) I will have to watch it tomorrow online somewhere.
December 3rd, 2007 at 11:38 am
I’ll be watching it online when I get home from work.

My friend called me this morning to tell me she’d just read about it in the 24 paper… ftlog why is The Hour news on page 23? God, it irritates me that we have to read about celebrity bullshit on page 2. What is wrong with you Vancouver? Who authorizes this paper? I’m going to give them a piece of my mind.
I’ll be watching, Matt. Can’t wait!!
I read the Hour website earlier this morning, it actually doesn’t say ‘Drugs’ on the site… It says ‘Prescription medication’. No matter the addiction, we’re there for you and you’re our Rockstar!!!!!!
December 3rd, 2007 at 11:53 am
See, as interesting as addiction to drugs are it would be far more original to be chemically enthralled by Pez candy or perhaps bubble wrap. Or maybe U2 albums post Joshua Tree. Now THAT would be truly bizarre.
Still looking forward to it. :)

Yeah we are SO dissapointed to know that you are not doing illegal drugs….Come on !
I’ll be sure to tune in. Their title is a bit harsh…as if all you are about is divorce, drugs and depression. Should be interesting…
December 3rd, 2007 at 12:03 pm
Sel, you took the words out of my mouth.. I’m sure George was probably not comfortable with that title either… Perhaps he doesn’t over see what the final title is going to say? But they could easily have added the word ‘prescription’ in there.
December 3rd, 2007 at 12:18 pm
Of course Ativan counts….it’s a controlled substance ((don’t let the prescription fool you, psychiatrists are salaried drug pushers in my opinion and I can say that from over 10 years of experience)). Not that I think prescriptions for psychotropic drugs are bad. But as you said, addiction is addiction. Some people are addicted to bacon ((and that is still something they should deal with))! I certainly felt like I was on crack for the first 2 days of my pact with Wellbutrin.
Anyway, now that we have bonded over pharmaceuticals…
This is my first comment to you. You don’t know me. I don’t know you.
My name is Ashley.

fuckin’ prosciutto is rock star enough, man. :)
December 3rd, 2007 at 12:37 pm
So looking forward to the show tonight Matthew. I have been waiting patiently for you to return since I missed the last interview. Exciting! Cheers to a good interview :)
December 3rd, 2007 at 12:51 pm
George rocks and I admire you for not being into that cliche. I’ve seen the most wonderful of people destroy themselves only to become a shallow case of a body that used to contain the most brilliant of souls. I’d be pretty devastated if you were into that.
December 3rd, 2007 at 1:06 pm
Looking forward to it!!!!
George is the best…actually its rather good to see George move onto more serious ventures since Muchmusic is such a shitty channel now. Sigh…if it could just be the nineties again:(
December 3rd, 2007 at 1:07 pm
This is the interview i’ve been waiting for. I’ll be definately be watching.
December 3rd, 2007 at 1:39 pm
I guess i will watch some tv today.
December 3rd, 2007 at 1:40 pm
I am reminded of a Minus the Bear song (sorry, I forget the name) that I was listening to just a little while ago, with the line “Ativan won’t kill.” The last time I head the song was well before the Hospital Music album, and I have to say I stopped and re-listened to the lyrics some more, as my interest had been piqued.

or even to just have said something other than what blatantly focuses on the negative. i imagine that being dragged through the same mud gets tiring.
how about “Matthew Good: a new album on life lessons, which inspires listeners to be more human”.
December 3rd, 2007 at 1:55 pm
Definitely excited to see you on the show tonight Matt!
December 3rd, 2007 at 2:15 pm
Matt I enjoyed your time in studio last evening on George’s radio show. I follow Steve Earle very much the same way my son follows you(of course in a non-stalking kind of way), and was very pleased when you requested Steve’s ” The Gringo’s Tale”. Great radio and great song. Thanks! We shall be watching The Hour this evening.
December 3rd, 2007 at 2:33 pm
I love the Hour and I’ve loved George since the day I finally got cable TV in my house. Best part, I might be able to get my mom to watch it with me so she’ll get an idea of what I’m talking abut. (I’d let her listen, but she’d just complain. Not worth it.)
December 3rd, 2007 at 5:30 pm
Alright!!! Whenever i watch that show i also wonder when you’ll be invited on.
December 3rd, 2007 at 6:00 pm
good shit! i have been wondering when george was gonna have you on!…just last night i heard you in a live interveiw with george on the fox at around 4 ish van city time! was that a warm up or something? the hour is a good show though and its even better when cool people are on it! have fun with it!…..lata!
December 3rd, 2007 at 6:01 pm
If George is willing to retire as Tommy Douglas’ advocate, maybe he can be your advocate for greatest Canadian! If he cant, well there’s always Brett Hart :D Can’t wait for the interview!
December 3rd, 2007 at 7:54 pm
Good interview Matt, though I really wish people would give you more time to talk politics instead of asking the same questions about the band, the tshirt, etc etc. Oh well…
Also, dunno if they showed you the pic they were using for the Bio, but it was pretty bad ass.
December 3rd, 2007 at 7:57 pm
I agree Wolfrider…should have had more time…better questions. Still good to see tho :)
December 3rd, 2007 at 8:03 pm
The one problem I’ve always had with The Hour is the style that the content is presented. So much is thrown at you and they always have so much lined up for any one night that there’s always a lack of getting too in depth into any one subject. I mean, obviously you need to do the “set up” questions, like Matt’s history with the band and Bateman’s start as an artist, but it’s not until the end of the interview that the show starts to really touch on the more interesting reasons to have those guest on, like Matt’s (or Bateman’s) political attitudes and how they reflect in their art.
It’s really turned me off from The Hour everytime I’ve watched it, as they just try to fit so much (in my opinion too much) into any one show. I mean, don’t get me wrong, I thought it was a solid interview with Matt, but it just seemed like right when it was getting to the meat and potatoes, suddenly it was over and George was switching to the next segment.
December 3rd, 2007 at 8:07 pm
forbes: totally agree..
December 3rd, 2007 at 8:25 pm
I agree as well. I would like to see more in depth conversation too. I don’t know why they feel the need to hurry the guests and cram so much into one show. I was hoping to hear more of Matt’s story and then it was over in the blink of an eye. Maybe we should go on the site and let them know how we feel about that, lol Not just in Matts case but for other interviews as well. So much to say if given a chance.
December 3rd, 2007 at 8:47 pm
AHH! It was too short. I watched 10 minutes of commercials waiting for that segment, and it left me wanting more. Also, green is a good colour on you Matt :)
December 3rd, 2007 at 8:51 pm
Good interview, I just wish it was longer.
December 3rd, 2007 at 8:54 pm
I posted this in the wrong place .. so Im posting it here as well. sorry for the duplicate…
I am an Ativan User as well and a big George fan, so it was good to see ya on the show tonight.
I take Ativan for panic attacks, but I am finding lately that I take it even when I dont have one. I was never told of the addcitive qualities of it. Ive been taking it for two years…. Thank you for shedding some light on the misuse of Ativan… I used to like not thinking.. now I am not so sure.
Thanks for the light in the darkness Matthew.

I too posted in the wrong place & apologize about the repeat……
Great interview!
Really enjoyed seeing two intellectual 30 somethings get into some important issues.
Matthew, for being out of your comfort zone, it was refresheshing to see how open you were on your experience. I’m sure it will perhaps lend caution to Adivan users out there. My father also is Bi-P, and I thank you for your courage & willingness to shed light on this “disease”.
Fan of your talents as a singer & songwriter. New Fan of this site!

I’m with Forbes on this one. I enjoy watching The Hour, however many times the short interviews leave me wanting more.
December 4th, 2007 at 10:52 am
watched it last night, thought it was great. it is fantastic how open you are.
December 4th, 2007 at 7:06 pm
Amazing interview. You never fail to impress, and the fact that you addressed the bi-polar issue was awesome. I have several family members who suffer from this disorder and it is great to see someone in a public position admit that they are affected by mental illness. It certainly plays a part in eliminating the social stigma associated with these conditions.

Me neither, I just had tea too, and then crashed before it came on. I missed it. :o(
