I came across this newspaper article yesterday, so I thought I would share it.

Four Lebanese university students have been jailed for a week for making crude remarks on the Facebook social networking site about the singing talents of a woman they met at a party, media reports said on Thursday.

Local newspapers reported that the students — all male — were ordered to be detained on January 10 after the young woman’s father objected to the authorities in the eastern town of Zahle.

The four were charged with slander and “violating public morality” and were ordered to be held in preventive detention despite objections by human rights groups.(AFP)

Moral of the story: watch what you say cause it might land you in jail.

Wow. You know in Pakistan we didn’t have a whole lot of freedom of speech, and I never really missed it. It didn’t affect my life too much. But reading this makes you value the luxury of being able to speak your mind.

IF it’s true, and how crude were the remarks, did they threaten her, etc. . . . …
Let’s assume for a moment the story is completely true.
    Could that happen here?
Here is a story (with screen shot) of a truly hateful facebook site, now defunct.
It even lists the members, who are easily searched and located on FB.

What resolution or compensation should the ‘victim’ here be afforded?
    I’ve never heard him sing . . . . .

You know, recent negative events have me questioning the whole Facebook thing…I initially signed on because friends in the blogosphere had moved there and I wanted to stay connected to them. But it seems a fun little venture could have serious implications for some…it has me reconsidering whether I want to invest my time in a place like that.

    Wow is right.

    Oh Zahle.

    Well that explains everything.

Lebanese joke..which no one will get, and someone will find offensive.

If this were the case here, I’d be jailed after attending every lebanese wedding I’ve ever been too where I’ve been subjected to horrible Arabic singing wedding bands.
