Fan Mike McGraner sent us some DVD footage shot in Cleveland during the U.S. acoustic tour, and I thought this might be nice to throw on here for everyone. Mike’s done some great work with the limited ability he had in shooting the show, so kudos to you, Mike.
The footage is of Matt’s last song in the encore that evening, If I Was A Tidal Wave (unreleased).
The file is rather big in file size and encoded in high quality, so it may take some time to load for some of you.

Yikes. That’s what post food poisoning insomnia voice sounds like. Harsh.
Report
Great song, Matt.
Report
Man, I don’t think you sounded that bad. A little harsh, but it’s dece, not to mention that I don’t think I’ve heard this song before, but I like it.
Report
I liked that better than the time you played it Calgary folkfest. I think it works better you sing it and play it somewhat subdued.
Report
Wow, great footage! Thanks to Mike for recording and thanks to Dale for sharing it with everyone else!
And, I think it sounded wonderful Matt. There is a certain honesty and vulnerability that shows through when you sing. It’s a treat to be able to watch it up so close like that. Beautiful.

Cool I like the black & white. I did notice a little scratchiness in the beginning but hey its better than I could ever do. Taylor guitars are really nice. OK I have to ask this question. The earplugs. Are they simply earplugs or are they also for the sound people, etc. to communicate with you?
Report
In ear monitors. it’s how you hear yourself play.
Report
matt, what do you use for in ear monitors?
Report
Not to placate you Matt, but you on a bad day is better than 99% of most everything else on a good day, in my biased and wholly unequal opinion.
Report
Please say this song is going to be on the new album (whenever you release it)

Nice work Mike!

Raw can be nice sometimes…like how people’s voices turn sexy when they have a cold, or how my eyes turn super green when I cry.
And in the quasi-related-day-or-two-old-comment department …I like how Matt is just like everyone else and their dog (sorry, bad joke!) when it comes to being a little awkward about singing the Happy Birthday song.

This is an extremely pleasing video to watch. I hope this and maybe more get added to the multimedia section.
I agree with those who mentioned the quality of your performance above having dealt with such a demeaning illness. However, as a professional, you always put your heart into every performance, not just for the sake of others attending, but how they all might look on it later. Reading all your entries while you were sick was interesting. Not all of us have to meet the same standards you do to pay the bills, as well as deal with the public.
But it was something in this performance that really intrigued me. Maybe it was the haziness in your eyes, or your silent reflection of each syllable you sang. But it was prominent here, beyond what a healthy professional would do. I think that’s what makes you an amazing person and artist. Much more than you can probably ever tell anyone through song or words on this blog.
Thank you for being so passionate about what you do.

Okay, just gonna throw this out there.
I found a version of YOU ARE HERE once that was different from the Broken demo. I think it was a solo acoustic recording, without the piano or anything, faster tempo, really thrashing the hell out of that guitar, three times the intensity in the vocals, not great sound quality, but still, it was possibly my all-time favorite Matthew Good song. Tragically, I lost it two years ago, and I’m still hoping that someday I’ll find it again.
Does anyone have a copy of this song, or know where I might find it? I’d be willing to trade my soul? Not that I don’t value my soul, music is just worth more to me. Or a bootleg copy of the third night, solo acoustic tour at the Vancouver East Cultural Centre, with the additional songs and an extended encore? Hand made pet rocks? Yeah, anyway. Wow, just lost my train of thought there. That’s about it I guess. Thanks.

I’m so glad to see this song hasn’t completely fallen by the wayside. It still might be one of my favourite songs you’ve ever done, Matt.

Great Song. Enjoyed it alot.

MATT THANKS FOR THE SHOW IN CLEVELAND AND FOR HANGIN AFTER. ERIC AND TERRI. YEAH ERIC FROM CLEVELAND THROUGH BUFFALO. ALL THE BEST.
Report
Ooo, lovely. Good tune for sure.

I figured that impressive camera of his would produce something wonderful. His pace in changing shots was perfect. I’m rather sure that most people there were thrilled to be attending and felt especially fortunate to have the chance to enjoy an evening with you, particularly when we learned you were still quite ill.
Thank you to Mr. McGraner and all involved in posting this piece; it definitely puts a smile on my face being reminded that I was there.

happy to have seen that.

Oh I Love it!!!
So are you gonna play this song during the acoustic part of the show on the new tour???
You gotta gotta gotta!!! It is beautiful!!!
Report
Oh. My. Gosh.
That was fantastic, and a real treat, as I’d never heard that song before.
Report
Simply beautiful…..
sigh.

that was great!
seamless video too… really like the b&w

I really want a live DVD of Matt’s. Acoustic, full band, whatever: I’ve seen both live and it’s always a great show. Some kind of concert or hybrid-documentary (like Wilco’s) would be great.
Report
That was gorgous. :)

It’s a beautiful song with a compelling message. Thanks for posting the video.

This show rocked…love this song. Any chance Mike recorded Tripoli?
Report
simply amazing
Report
Well, I’ve run out of superlatives…everyone beat me to them ;0)
Matthew, look at the reaction you are getting from this. THAT’s why you need to do a live DVD-thingy. Does it HAVE to be expensive? Can it not be a downloadable iTunes movie? For those of us starved of seeing you live (us Europeans, hint, hint) this is a morsel to treasure. For sure, I’d love it on my iPod. And, BTW, you sound GREAT!!!

Apropos of nothing..nice to see the Dinner Auction is back on…

One of my favourite songs for sure. Woody Guthrie for the 21st century.
Gotta say Matt, you’re a fucking trooper! I think most guys can admit we’re big pussies when we’re sick. No one should question your dedication to your fans.

Mike McGraner!!! You are FABULOUS for providing that video… you wouldn’t happen to belong to any torrent networks and want to share that, would you? Like… you know… the whole thing???
I was at that show, and I would love to be able to listen to it over and over and over. I’ve seen Matt 8 or 9 times and I’m from the Cleveland area– it was just too much to have him play in my backyard… please?????

If you hadn’t stated you were ill I don’t think anyone would have known. It’s a pretty good take I’d say - like the song - the guitar sounds good - what model Taylor is it Matt?
Report
That’s awesome. From one hard-working individual to another, you epitomize professionalism. Please release this song so my sister and I can buy it.

Nice work Mike!
Matt, if that’s how you sound after all you went through, you’ve got nothing to worry about.

Quoting Dale Mugford:
I fully agree .. someone was singing a song at work yesterday with the radio and I was like “you sing well, but the song sucks” and then he was like “why, who do you like” and I was like “Matthew Good.” and he was like “that’s it?” and I was like “pretty much, yeah”
Your voice seeps in to my skin and resonates in my bones it’s a purely physical euphoria I have never experienced it with any other musician
Mike awesome job!!
Report
I agree with Dale!!!! Great job Mike!!!!
Report
Matt, Dale, and Mike. I think I speak for ALL of Matt’s fans when I say “we love the live stuff”! Please post more if and when you have it available. Mike, the quality of this video is amazing. Thank you very much.

I think this sounds really good. Like the song.

Great job on the video. My Canon Powershot can’t do that shit. One of my favorite songs, not yearning for it released on CD though, i think the demo version u released of it is perfect.
