Matthew Good

Over the years this website has been mentioned in numerous notable publications and has been linked to by various well-known websites. I have also been contacted by the likes of the BBC in the past with regards to getting a hold of authors, in that particular case it was Samar and their desire to interview her about the Israeli invasion of Lebanon after reading her entries on the site.

But today I got a bit of an enjoyable shock. While reading the Comment Is Free section of the Guardian’s website I noticed that an entry that I recently wrote is featured in their ‘Best Of The Web’ listings. Given the paper’s reputation, to me such a hat tip far surpasses being mentioned by the likes of the New York Times, The Globe And Mail, and similar publications. It was, I must admit, a very pleasant surprise.

About This Entry

  1. Congrats Matt =)

  2. Getting linked by a site like The Guardian almost makes enabling linkbacks in WordPress worth it :)

  11. Wow, that’s fantastic. Congrats.

    04 / 02 / 16:28
  12. As an aspiring author I love reading your entries.

Congrats for being honoured by a major publication. It is justification of the fact that maybe the world is starting to wake up to the pointlessness of the War in Iraq. By reading your opinions more people will probably begin to question the “length” of the process of leaving Iraq. As a teenager, I can’t help but feel as if the war is so very far away and it has nothing to do with me. Obviously, this is not the case since war effects everyone. I find I have to take sometime everyday to realize that more people should think of solutions of ending unnecessary war, like you have, instead of more ways to ignore the elephant in the room.

Thanks for giving me something to comment on Mr. Good

    04 / 02 / 16:32
  13. After buying the Guardian this morning for the coach trip back to Cornwall I saw that very mention, somewhere in the middle of your beloved south-west. Nice one.

    04 / 02 / 16:36
  14. Indeed, congrats!

Though I didn’t quite want to agree with you about conclusion for America and Iraq, I have to concede you’re quite likely to be correct.

It reminds me a lot of when I found out that one of my photos was going to be published for an ad in the official match day programme being handed out during an Arsenal vs United fixture last November.

  57. It is quite a nice compliment, to be mentioned by your favorite publication that is.

Even if it is the Guardian. That might be okay for socially conscious award winning musicians with a penchant for geo-politics and poetry.

I line my bird cage with it.

For me, I want to be penciled in as character in a Frank Miller graphic novel. As soon as the restraining order gets lifted I think I can get close enough to make my 3rd, and *fingers crossed, final pitch.

    04 / 03 / 04:33
  58. Congratulations, Matt! Some well-deserved recognition!!

Hope you are enjoying your time being at home! (BTW- How’s little B doing?)

    04 / 03 / 06:59
  61. Well, since we’re sharing stories.

At 16, my daughter had dropped out of school for over a year and had gone from an A student to a failing student (a long story involving a dickhead teacher, his crony [the VP], anxiety & depression). Very worrying.

I enrolled her in an alternative school who “gets” kids and knows how to work toward a supportive environment and focus on strength vs weaknesses (her former school, full of jocks/jockettes didn’t know what to do with creative kids like her, so they became “problem” children).

She’s currently thriving and bringing A’s again as her new (and improved) school really caters to her passion for photography/art/writing. She was recently floored when she found out that, not only had something she’d written been submitted by her teacher and published in a youth magazine, but the school has lined up a gig for her and she’ll be writing/taking pics for the local paper here. Talk about going from zero to hero….her other school failed miserably and, in this new school, this kid’s going places (all thanks to some hard work on her part and some really caring individuals).

It’s amazing what a boost you get when something you love is appreciated…kind of fuels the fire, no?

    04 / 03 / 07:09
  62. Matt,

You have a wonderful gift of writing with such depth, honesty and passion. Oh how I would of loved to pull up a chair when you were sitting at the table across from me last week at the Tin Angel. Mentally stimulating conversation with you would of been the icing on the cake! Too bad you didn’t stick around after the show. You probably went down the street and pounded down a few beers. Huh?

    04 / 03 / 07:11
  63. *geez I miss the edit feature….

“when something you LOVE is appreciated” is the result of mixing two thoughts together and should’ve read when something you’ve created is appreciated. D’oh.

    04 / 03 / 07:13
  64. Hope they know you can write decent tunes also!

    Congrats,

  70. Just great.
But that’s nothing new for us, your regular readers. We all know you’re the best blog-writer ever : D

But seriously, even if I have to spend an hour to understand everything in your longer notes (english, sheesh- still learning), pick a couple dictionaries, ask my teacher about the meaning of something I don’t understand, I REALLY enjoy reading your notes. It’s just the way you show the world in your words…

Yay, and I’ve just heard “…there’s something in the way you…” playing in my winamp :)
Right- there’s something in the way you’re writing- almost makes me catch a positive cold :p

Best wishes for you, Matt from Warsaw :)

  72. Wow, Congratulations!

Though I will say I must definitely be more cognizant of what I write here, if the Guardian and the likes read this site, then clearly others will too!

I figured it was read mostly by the community of MG.org.

  77. Im listening to the radio on Martin Luther King’s anniversary, and something he said stood out to me. Even then, at the beginning of the Vietnam war, the US was spending $500,000 on each enemy soldier killed, and only $53 on each US citizen. His statement was ‘war is an enemy to the poor’.

Hows things have progressed. Or, in fact, regressed.
