Well, They Got One Thing Right
First, my entry last night entitled ‘you see’, was actually a just a test post, so it shares no relevance to this entry.
I didn’t watch the Junos last night. In fact, I don’t own a television. But on this occasion I wish that I had watched, just for the diatribe of host Russell Peters.
If there’s one thing the Junos are known for it’s how utterly painful most of its hosts have been. Last night, from some of the excerpts that I have read, it seems that curse was broken.
Here are a select few…
“I can’t believe they have a post-apocalyptic theme up here. We’ll let a brown guy host, but the world has to end first.”
“South Asians, my people, are now the largest visible minority in Canada. Do you know what that means, Calgary? Pretty soon your cowboys are going to be Indians.”
“I never actually have seen the Junos before, which makes me Canadian.”
“The Junos people have been treating me really well. They actually got me a driver - Chad Kroeger.”
One wonders if that last remark will lead to Kroeger claiming in an interview that Peters is due for a good old fashion country ass kicking.
My Recent Canucks Entry
If you subscribe to the website using the RSS feed then you still have access to it, even though it’s been deleted. My reason for doing so is that I’ve been receiving a ton of email from Canucks fans lambasting me for everything from my lack of knowledge to the fact that ‘my music sucks’. Normally that wouldn’t bother me too much, but when you start to get emails that claim that Rolling Stone voted you the worst song writer in North America, which is a total fabrication, then you know you’re in for a shit storm that’s best avoided. If I’m going to be attacked for anything, let it be for commentary regarding something that’s actually relevant to the state of the world, not a bloody hockey team. At least Hockey Night In Canada analyst Jeff Marek said he liked it.

“Never made it as a drunk man” was pretty good too.
And “Nickleback is changing their name to “I need my licence back”…
OMG classic stuff.
I somehow missed Jann Arden… crap…….

You can’t go wrong with Russell Peters XD His stand up is awesomely hilarious.
April 7th, 2008 at 8:21 am
“Who is Fiest?” Not a dumb question: I live in Calgary and have no idea who she is (she is apparently a local girl), nor, it must be said, do I care. Come to think of it, the whole affair made this city look like a bunch of celebrity-starved hicks. It was ridiculous…almost as bad as Stampede.

From a trusted source in hockey:
“You don’t have to play the game, to know that {a team that doesn’t make the playoffs] suck”
As for Vancouver not being a hockey town - it’s not.
It’s a Canuck town. Conversely, Toronto is not a hockey town - It’s a Leaf’s town.
The city has to support all tiers and programs to earn the moniker of “Hockey Town”. Enter Detroit. Enter Montreal.
Enter BRANDON MANITOBA!

That just gave me the best laugh of the day. The very idea is ludicrous. Where do these people come from? Ignore them all!

Truth is it was actually ME that got voted as worst song writer in N. America proving the good folks at Rolling Stone are on the pulse of the scene.

I believe being nominated is reward enough.
BTW I said in the Juno post way back that R. Peters would be clutch.
I rock.

Oh no! Someone online has said something disparaging about the hockey team I like! IT’S WAR!
As always, Toothpaste for Dinner says it best.

For the 90 seconds i watched the show as i was channel surfing, yes the host was pretty funny. Still don’t know who Feist is.
April 7th, 2008 at 8:51 am
LOL! Matt, I think you should make test posts more often … for something that wasn’t even a full sentence that sure sparked a lot of discussion.
I’m from the US and have never seen the Junos (apparently that makes me Canadian, too!) but Russell Peters sounds like he was awesome. A friend of mine recommended his stand-up to me recently. Looks like I should check it out. :)

Russell Peters is my favorite comedian, has been for some time. Sorry I missed him.
Especially funny are the bits about his Dad.

I for one like Feist. She’s a very talented singer-songwriter, and I love what I’ve heard from her latest album. She’s not a schmaltzy prima donna like Celine Dion or retredded formula like Nickelback or whoever. She’s the real deal.

And I have to say I appreciate that Feist has brought dance back to music videos in a big way…with people who are actually wearing clothes! It’s refreshing.

I know, I felt stupid asking that, because I really though she did good in her performance and her speech on her arm.. LOVED THAT!!! She seems cute…. .sad that the hometown doesn’t know her yet, but that is the way it goes, right? I never knew Nelly Frittata was from my hometown and played the mandatory Ukelele just like I did, until people started talking about her ass… Apparently her and I have the same one… same hometown, probably coincidence. lol
April 7th, 2008 at 9:36 am
Feist really is amazing. I can’t not get up and dance to her music.
April 7th, 2008 at 9:40 am
She was also in BSS. 7/4 (shoreline) is a great song.
April 7th, 2008 at 9:50 am
I’m glad she won so many awards last night, she doesn’t seem as manufactured as the rest of the field. Being from Nova Scotia I also have to give some props to Wintersleep for finally getting some recognition. I did find it weird that Hospital Music was up for best rock album, it would have been better suited for another category, but ah well, that’s how the politics of the Junos works I guess.
April 7th, 2008 at 9:58 am
Feist came out of the band “Broken Social Scene,” which is a joint effort by a number of musicians. She contributed vocals to the band. You might remember the music video that had about 4 or 5 guitar players and they were all standing in front of a screen behind them all wearing paper bags over their heads.

I’ve loved Feist - before the iPod commerical. When I first saw it, I thought it was a Canada-only advertisting campain. It took a while for it to click in that someone in the States actually thought to use her song would be perfect for their ads. Score one for the Canadian Indie scene.
Now, if only the attention span of the adoring North Americian public would allow for some of her peers to get a foot in the door…
April 7th, 2008 at 10:59 am
Yeah, Mushaboom was used in a commercial for perfume, if I remember correctly.
I love Feist, and have for many years. I think it’s wonderful that she’s finally getting the recognition she really deserves. She definitely is the real deal. I know I’ll never get to see her in a little venue again, like I have several times before. She’s too big for them now.
I was happy to see Serena Ryder and Wintersleep win best new artists, although they aren’t really new to me, or many people for that matter. They are just new to the rest of Canada (the world?). I’m glad they both finally got the recognition they deserved too.
April 7th, 2008 at 11:02 am
Mushaboom is used in a LaCoste commercial.
It was reported that McDonalds wanted to use Mushaboom and she said no to McDonalds and their million dollar offer. Amazing if true.
I have owned her records for some time. Great stuff.
Her show in Hamilton, just a few weeks after Matt was at Hamilton Place, was fantastic.
April 7th, 2008 at 11:22 am
Wow. That’s, what, two posts in a month you’ve had to remove due to responses? Three? I give you credit for your restraint. I’d just tell them to kiss ass and get happy.
April 7th, 2008 at 11:24 am
Aaaaand, Sealion was used in Grey’s Anatomy!
(Oh, shush, I like that show.) (And it usually uses pretty good music, too.)

“One wonders if that last remark will lead to Kroeger claiming in an interview that Peters is due for a good old fashion country ass kicking.”
Maybe it’s just me, but I don’t know how you go on record saying that you sucked your own dick and then expect to strike fear into the hearts of your enemies (real or imagined) by threatening ass kickings. None of the tough guys I ever new were auto-fellatiators.
Hmmmm…discretion is the better part of valour though. I guess I should be careful - maybe being able to reach your own dick is part of some mystical ancient monkey kung-fu thing and maybe I just signed up for my own ass-kicking!
I’m not too concerned - the Lamborghini would never make it to Whitehorse and I’m more afraid of Anne Murray anyway.

Serena Ryder is excellent. I have her one album, If Your Memory Serves You Well and all but three songs are covers of old Canadian hits. Her cover of You Won’t Mater Anymore is one of the best I’ve ever heard.

I’ve angered quite a few people over the years with my views on politics and (especially) religion. But I have never caused so much rage as when I recently stated on my page that “Montreal Canadien fans are to hockey what Nickelback fans are to music.”
You wouldn’t believe how upset people got. You would have thought I was talking about their children. Of course it was just a joke and doesn’t even make much sense. But I realized that people take their hockey very seriously. Too seriously, I think. But at least they were all upset about being compared to Nickelback fans.
I know many people that pretty much worship Fiest. I haven’t really got into her music. Maybe it’s the voice. Although I did like Bright Eyes’ cover of her song “Mushaboom.”
April 7th, 2008 at 2:34 pm
Feist is great. There’s really nothing to dislike about her music.

Let’s just say besides a few great performances and Russell Peters you didn’t miss much.
I still think you deserved the award more for your album. But who the heck cares if you win an award anyways. You made music that you needed to and that has done more than for your fans, not some shit head who never even listened to it who just wants to get you pissed off. Screw them your a great musician. Besides there is technically a thing called freedom of speech if they don’t like what you write or say don’t read or listen to it.
April 7th, 2008 at 4:42 pm
Yeah I didnt get the chance to see the junos last night as we had an EMI post party at work.
It was a pretty cool party , Fiest, Anne Murray, Finger 11, K-os and a few other people were here.. Althought unless they wore nametags I had no clue who anyone was.. I just kept giving them all saketinis when they came in. I was really hoping we would have gotten the Russel Peters party… I think my favorite piece he does is about passport pictures…
April 7th, 2008 at 4:57 pm
Between that recent thread and this one I am quite amused.
I own every Finger 11 CD including the Rainbow Butt Monkeys Stuff.
Seen them live half a dozen times.
I own every Barenaked Ladies CD.
Seen them live about 40 times since 1992 / got to go on stage with them in Hollywood.
I own all three Feist CDs that I know of.
Seen her live once.
I own every MG CD.
Have seen him live about 30 times.
Then again I also enjoy / own everything from / have seen live, both Garth Brooks and Tool.
I enjoy a wide variety of music.

HM was nominated for best rock album and lost out to Finger 11.
Though I’m sure all of us here wanted Matt to win, and felt he deserved it, in the end, it doesn’t matter. With Matt and his music, we have a very open and honest man who has shared his experiences with us and who has let us share our experiences with him. We have someone whose music has helped a lot of us through some shitty times, and has made some good times even better, and we have a close community of fans to share it all with. When it comes down to it, I’m not going to remember how many Junos Matt has or has not won, because being able to be part of something as wonderful as Matt’s music and the community we have here trumps anything a gaudy statue could ever say.
April 8th, 2008 at 6:16 am
I watched the Junos and truly enjoyed Russell Peters. I’ve seen him a few times live and he’s incredibly funny. He was the perfect choice for host. I’ve not heard much of Feist however when she performed I found her music to be quite new and fresh. Definitely something different!. Blue Rodeo - group of the year and well deserved. I was a bit disappointed that The Sadies didn’t win Roots album of the year. These guys have been working their asses of all over the world for years and this was their first Juno nomination. If you want to go to a live show that will leave you walking away at the end saying “holy shit that was great” go to a Sadies show……Nobody does what they do. They are a one of a kind act. That being said I am totally gearing up to see Matt and the band on tour, with The Spades opening. Wow…there’s some real bang for your buck.
It was nice to not see Nickleback at the Junos. They’ll probably put out a new album of old music with different vocals and melody lines this year and sell millions of copies. I compare listening to Nickleback to getting a root canal with no freezing — fucking painful. Creed wannabe’s they are and always have been and the same goes to the acts that Kroeger produces…notice they all sound the same? Somebody do something different!
April 8th, 2008 at 7:59 am
I watch the Junos every year (I don’t know why, I think it’s usually to see the one or two performers that I actually enjoy, I usually change the channel for all the others…)
I am going to be different than you all here and say that I didn’t find Russell Peters all that great.
I know I laughed at 2 of his jokes all night. The one about the cowboys and indians and the one about being conceived to an Anne Murray song.
I have to agree with billkyjoe about Wintersleep and Serena Ryder. It was great to see them win!
April 8th, 2008 at 8:41 am
Smandace, you a Nickelback fan?
April 8th, 2008 at 9:56 pm
