It amazes me how with certain accusations, the notion of “innocent until proven guilty” seems to be ignored.

It’s like that show Mantracker on OLN.
What a nice guy to offer his services.

Bloodhounds should get the credit - if you have never seen them work it is truly something to behold. Their ability to hold and follow a scent is second to few other dogs, and in this particular kind of scenario, they are arguably the best. Plus their bark is “way cool” as my son says - makes you want to sit on your front porch with no shoes and drink something out of a mason jar.
Report
Quoting Brian Smart:
Oddly enough that is how I write my songs except my front porch is a windowsill facing crack dealers and my mason jar is full of coffee. Oh yeah, and my blood hound is a grey kitten. But I totally get what your son is saying.

Awesome way for the guy to be caught.By a woodsman. Awesome.

I am always amazed at how the media tries to play a story farther than it needs to. During the press conference, reporters continuously asked why the RCMP couldn’t do their job properly and were embarassed by a local man that was able to capture Schoenborn when they couldn’t. Give me a break. Police don’t magically wave a wand and the suspect appears in their cell. A citizen happened to have found him by chance, so big deal. Lay off the RCMP. They work hard, and do all of the things that normal people can’t even begin to understand, let alone want to do themselves.
I would also like to add that we have no idea if Schoenborn is actually guilty. The mother has some interesting timelines in her story, and we know nothing except what the media has spoon fed us. There is a high probability that he is guilty, but we honestly have no idea until the case matures. He is merely a SUSPECT at the moment. This is how guilty people get away: the media gives the people someone to blame, and everyone can all of a sudden just relax like nothing ever happened. Want some lessons on that? Go watch the movie Arlington Road.

Why doesn’t the RCMP have people like that working for them……and why would they decline his help in the first place…..like JFC…Our tax dollar well at work!! F’N brilliant!! Hillier for RCMP Chief!! Why would an innocent man hide in the wilderness for weeks on end……go study behaviour! please!! My god!! Glad it’s come closer to an end….extremely saddening ordeal!
Report
I mean….” hi my kids have been murdered, but i am so shocked i gotta hide from everyone in the middle of knowhere’s. And by the way, i am TOTALLY Innocent”….LMFAO
Report
When they first started reporting on this they immediately claimed that Schoenborn had killed himself and that they believed that his body was found in the house. That reporting is irresponsible in two senses, one being that it immediately casts doubt onto his innocence and it also prevents people from looking for him right from the start.
Report
Tobin, are you meaning that if a neighbour said ‘his body is in there’, it could have been a deterent? confused.
Report
only in Camada eh!
Report
The CBC quoted the RCMP as saying the suspect was found by a man out walking his dog. Way to give no credit there RCMP. Embarrassed much?
The fact thta a citizen decided to hunt this guy down is a bit concerning though.
Report
Mr. Robinson’s award should be more than an interview and a pat on the back. Who knows how many lives have been saved because Schoenborn is now locked up.
No body knows what else Schoenborn might have done had he become delirious due to starvation and dehydration. Of course he probably already is delirious and in shock about murdering his three children…..
Sad….
Report
Quoting T-Lee:
I was saying that it was falsely reported that he had killed himself along with the children and, if it had not been that way, there would have been a better concentrated search for him right off the bat.
Also by reporting that he has killed himself they also said that he had killed the children. This sent out the message early on that he had killed the children and was completely guilty, which will cause some problems when they need to take him to court and there are a whole group of people who heard from the news that he was guilty.
I don’t quite know where you have gotten deterrent from though?
Report
From what i understand, this guy just stumbled across him. He did his civic duty, that’s about it. And i have to say, the media asking all of these people in the town if they’re frightened for their kids is retarded. IF (innocent until proven guilty, though it looks bad), he was the one to kill them, i doubt he was likely to go off and try and kill someone else. Its the idiot media helping to build up peoples fears and play off of them. Its more sensationalism.
I imagine if you spoke with a crimonologist, or a psychologist, they would be the first to tell you the same - even if the guy was the killer, its unlikely that hes a psychopath. The killings were most likely a one time thing, they were not the actions of some serial killer. It takes a special breed for that, and dehydration and starvation certainly have nothing to do with that.
Lets just put some common sense into the debate instead of jumping at base fears.
Report
Quoting Dale McShannock:
I’m afraid I have to disagree with you.
Given Mr. Schoenborn’s criminal history, I’d think it was wise to assume that he could be dangerous. I mean he’d already displayed violent behavior and had outstanding charges on “uttering threats to cause bodily harm” - those threats made towards children.
While “innocent until proven guilty” comes into play, when it comes to children we need to be proactive and consider their right to safety as well. And this man was capable of being violent and dangerous so these are more than base fears and there’s a good possibility that someone with a history of violence could endanger others when confronted.

As a member of the media covering this story, I feel I need to correct a couple of misconceptions.
-It’s a BIG pet peeve of mine to hear “the media” described as a monolith that moves and acts as one organism. Each member of the media and each news establishment has its own approach, takes its own angle, asks their own questions. If you don’t like the angle they’re taking, change the station/website. If you still can’t find an angle to your liking, contact a reporter and demand they ask the right questions. We’re always looking for unique angles. If you STILL can’t get any satisfaction, you’re not looking hard enough. Sure, members of the media need to be challenged, but it won’t be with terms like “idiot media,” “retarded,” etc.
-Reports that the perpetrator committed suicide were based on initial RCMP statements that they were not looking for a suspect. When police say a bunch of people are dead and they’re not looking for a suspect, that means it’s a murder-suicide. These RCMP statements were soon reversed.
-The idea that the media should consider a Hollywood movie when they cover stories the way they do made me chuckle.
En sum, I’m not exonerating “the media” altogether (can’t believe I just typed that). Reporters have been hired to ask the questions the public would ask given the chance. If your questions are not being answered, let us know. And please refrain from using the word “retarded.”
Report
Quoting peters:
Great points. The media doesn’t have all the answers and shouldn’t be expected to….they’re trying to extract them, like the rest of us.
They provide puzzle pieces as they receive them and it’s up to us to put them together in a way that fits for us. Sure, sometimes the sensationalism is overkill, but many wouldn’t even tune in without it. It grabs attention and gets people listening.
If the media waited until everything was proven and concrete, then it wouldn’t be very effective in soliciting the public’s help. They have to go on what they’ve got at the moment in these types of scenarios to keep us up to speed on things as they unfold. I don’t think we’d accept anything less.
Report
Quoting railgrinder:
Perhaps the RCMP declined this guys help because of the liability issue. Since the badguy was wanted in connection with a TRIPLE homicide it would be unwise to enlist the aid of a civilian in a manhunt. Can you imagine the uproar if this civilian was murdered? And the RCMP do have people like this working for them, their called Dog Masters and they find all sorts of people routinely.
Good the guy got caught, shame on this civilian and the rest that disparage the RCMP for doing their job.
Report
Quoting Dale McShannock:
I would say that it takes a special kind of person to kill their kids (Psychopath could be a useful descriptor). I would even go so far as to say that if you were to commit such an act the life of a stranger would be worth even less. But, I suppose we have the silly notion that this guy is innocent until proven guilty (in a couple years time at trial, want him out and walking around?). But he will be held on remand until the trial, essentially held in custody PRIOR to being found guilty. What a strange coincidence…
Report
Quoting Tobin:
Because you had said ‘prevents people from looking for him from the start’…
sorry i read it wrong originally… I thought that the neighbour might be involved… because why would that person say ‘his body is in there?’.. it just seems really fishy.
