Matthew Good

Been busy. Been up and been down. Time stands still out here, it’s the same thing day in and day out. Unconscious movement from lying to standing, from hotel room to rehearsal hall, the reverse, and then back to bed with a sandwich and bad television. It gets dark, the lights of the downtown core paint the room a hazy blue-white, I shove a magazine between the frame and the balcony door to keep it open, the wind whips the curtains around.

In my head the sound of speakers breaking up, of crash symbols, of my voice spiraling. My feet feel pedals beneath them, my arms the edges of guitars rubbing sweating skin raw. I laugh, crack jokes, concentrate, and then lose myself in passing chords, little moments like photographs I have known for years. I swallow coffee, water, taste cigarettes and rub my tongue against the roof of my mouth, abrasive and dry. It is no different than the beginning of days, even if 15 years later.

About This Entry

  1. Yummy, abrasive and dry mouth. Mints are great for that kinda thing.
All your hard work is going to pay off, as all of us fans are greatful. And just think, hopefully in another 15 years, it will be the same thing over again…

  2. The ship used by Jason and the Argonauts. It’s no longer recognized as a constellation by the people who (rather arrogantly, I might suggest) recognize constellations.

    Claim the fleece.

    05 / 14 / 17:02
  3. And worth noting that Jason died miserable and lonely when a piece of that rotting ship fell on him. Make sure that the stage is in good shape before you step onto it Matt.

  6. Do you ever lay half awake, half in a dream and feel that you are a giant laying on a bed that you barely fit or the opposite, that you’re this itsy bitsy body on a massive bed?

    05 / 14 / 17:45
  7. That was nice…”rubbing sweating skin raw” - love that feeling.

If you need a break from it all, just tell me and you can come to my house. I have mega cable and I think I owe you some cookies. I might even own a movie or two that you haven’t seen yet.

  8. Going to work and hitting the same old road again is stressful. Don’t wreck yourself working too hard.

  9. But it’s all worth it right?

p.s. Tv is so bad right now that my favourite show these days is One Tree Hill..

I would think you have to be really unlucky to have a boat fall on you. In principle, I am not entirely against coming to matthewgood.org for my ancient Greek mythology riddles, but I would like an explanation to this one.

    I love it!

I love the Bad Sandwiches and Television comment, it was funny. BUT I’m feeling superstitious right now and wishing they never made that comment.

  22. Do I sense a whiff of excited, anxious tension and anticipation of touring with a band again? You, Matthew, on one side of an impenetrable glass wall; us, on the other…with similar feelings, Waiting For The Man. In a few days that glass wall will magically melt and we will all be exposed, raw emotion and all. I’ve seen lots of performers / bands in my time but, honest to God, I have NEVER been so excited / anxious as I am right now (especially as I am relying on two flights, same day, to get to Kingston :0) ). It’s a long journey for me that day, but an even bigger journey for you on this seemingly never-ending tour I guess…
Take care, rest up, sleep naked atop the bed (it’s cooler!) and have fun. How I wish this tour – rehearsals and all – were to be released on DVD…(don’t answer that one – I know you already have).
    xx

  23. Oddly enough Matt, you make all that sound a lot more like living than zoning out in a office all day long.

You are right about being “awake”. As strange as it feels, it’s a peaceful and somewhat calming feeling so when it does happen, I just kind of savour the moment….
Too often I hear people freakin out about different spiritual experiences and maybe we need to coast with them….and not be afraid.
    So off topic, I know…….

Doesn’t matter how you live. Only matters how you love. We all gotta do what we gotta do to get there.

Well, in my class, I thought that the professor said it was part of the mast that fell on him, but Wikipedia is telling me that it was the stern. At this point, if I remember correctly, the boat was no longer in use and had been dedicated to Poseidon, but I think that Jason decided to take it out for a spin one more time. I’m not entirely sure how the stern could fall on a man…it may have still been up on the shore at this point (it was mythologically the first boat that man ever sailed on, so they probably didn’t have harbours), but I don’t have a good answer for you.

The best way to explain it: the gods did it. The gods always do it, especially when it’s strange, unbelievable stuff.

…And that has been my short, possibly inaccurate mythology lesson. The More You Know!
