I think that the backlash against such an attack would be severe, perhaps catastrophic depending on the weapons used.

If the intention is truly to save American lives, then NOT attacking Iran would be the better option in my opinion.

Surely those smart eggheads in Washington are aware of this. What then, is the real goal?

It doesn't surprise me one bit that the Administration would try one at their last chance to make the world a worse place and piss everyone off even more. Hillary seems interested in continuing the attack, but Bush wants the credit for initiating it.

Now for some humour to hopefully lighten up this subject so people don't become so depressed in the hopelessness of this situation (you could change it if you impeach him! just just ALL have to stand up as one voice and say "get the fuck out" ), here is some humour.

Please don't attack me. I'm NOT for this, just trying to lighten people up so we stay positive and not succumb to the quicksand associated with such a heavy topic. And it is fun to pick on certain "Icon" entertainers that support the government's shinanigans (take a look at what Jeff "Skunk" Baxter is now http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jeff_Baxter -- yeah missile defense expert! I guess he ain't Reelin' In The Years anymore )

One last thing before the humour... I changed the spelling of the word to avoid the NSA's scanning through IP packets and website contents.

As per the propaganda... the Beach Boys have re-released one of their hits to show support. here's the lyrics...

Bm bm bm, bm bm Iran
Bm bm bm, bm bm Iran

Bm Iran, because we can, we'll bm Iran
We've got the Iraqi's rollin' in their new found freedom, so bm Iran
Bm bm, bm bm Iran

let's get Iran, it's the master plan, let's get Iran because they hate Americans, bm Iran
Bm Bm, Bm Iran

Bush's got a play his hand, America needs make a stand, we'll lower your taxes if you let us bm Iran
Bm bm, Bm bm Iran

Bm Iran, because we can, let's bm Iran
We've made our people naive so we can do as we can, so bm Iran
Bm Bm, Bm Iran
"Fundamental democratic principles of governing are at stake in this election! How are they not being addressed ad nauseam by the candidates?"

For the same reason that (some) Americans haven't learned their lesson.

I talk to Americans all the time. Smart Americans. They are all deeply ashamed of Bush and of the war. Democracy is occuring in America. A new day is dawning. A democrat will be elected to the Whitehouse in November. The west won't go to war with Iran. A slew of more efficient hybrid cars will be developed. Most of the summer blockbuster movies will be good.

Life is good. relax.
You're scaring me :)

But, I have to agree (at least in part) with P. Martini. Some Americans haven't learned the lesson. The "Smart Americans" (I'm using quotes because this, to me, is a label) probably never had to learn this lesson. Another portion of Americans is probably simply so disenchanted with administration and where trusting their lies led that they might not even be listening anymore - not because they support one political view or another but simply because they are tired. For anyone who wants serious answers, none are provided. The election campaigns are reminding me of a "Rat Race" only while the prize for the candidate is fairly clear - at least on paper (I'm still confident that neither of them know what they are in for) - what is at stake for the people is painfully uncertain.

What was the lesson anyway? Don't trust those above you? Question everything? Stop and think? Keep your emotions in check? And yes, it was all resolved 5 years ago, with a victory speech by Mr. Bush himself.

Happy May Day!

this is TOTALLY off-topic, but has anyone read the Australian Prime Minister's speech last week regarding Muslims wanting live under Sharia law in that country??? It offended some (probably the people he was regarding to in his speech) but at the same time, echoed the thoughts of many Australians...

I sent it to a few of my friends and was promptly shit on....and believe me, i do NOT take kindly to being called a racist....

someone out there, read it and tell me what YOU think!

"The question is, have the people of the United States learned their lesson?"

The answer is "No". I am disappointed to have come to that conclusion, but I have, nonetheless. It's instructive that NBC News didn't pick up the NYT Barstow story outing the Pentagon for it's "surrogate" analyst practices. That, undoubtledly, as the most significant news story that day, and it wasn't reported in the national news, for the obvious reason that NBC was culpable.

Also, though, Americans have not demanded that the Presidential candidates talk about how the Republicans have used the Executive against the American people and its democracy. I have a simple question: When both Democratic nominees are arguing that McCain is an extension of the Bush policies, why hasn't either Democratic candidate made the Bush PsyOps (a policy of the Bush Administration) a question which McCain has to answer? The corollary question is: Why has McCain not voluntarily "denounced and rejected" (or "rejected and denounced" I can't remember which Clinton said was the stronger word, semantically) that Bush policy voluntarily?

Fundamental democratic principles of governing are at stake in this election! How are they not being addressed ad nauseam by the candidates?

Its all a paranoid horror show.

“It is my opinion, it is the policy of the Iranian government, approved to highest level of that government, to facilitate the killing of Americans in Iraq.”

It could be argued it is the official policy of the American government to facilitate the killing of Americans in Iraq. By keeping a large military presence they are 'assisting in the progress' of them being killed.

This justification that Iran is the problem will not fall easily. There has been a sea change in the public's opinion. The blind faith that the Middle East can be remade by America alone is over.

Yeah, the Guardian quotes Gates as saying that the deployment could serve as a "reminder" to Iran of US resolve to defend its interests in the region. Mind you, he doesn't say what those interests are...
You're right – there's an awful lot of cheat puffing rhetoric going on right now – all serving to mask the real truth...and apparently we are in for a circus parade of the Iranian arms "allegedly" seized from insurgents....

I think you're right in your assertions generally.

I do think there are probably many Iranians who desire regime change in their own country. (Just as there are many Americans who desire the same in the US).

I don't think the US will attack Iran directly as they did in Iraq. This would seriously punctuate the instability in the middle east. Perhaps if the oil situation worsens we might be sliding towards it but I seriously doubt it.

One thing that is forgotten about the Iraq conflict and the 'selling' of that war is that Bush did give a speech - probably the most underappreciated of his administration - to the UN where he argued the case for war and solicited for support.

As such - I don't see a war with Iran being sold in the US - regardless of the propaganda being sent on the airwaves or the lectures being given.
