Matthew Good

I woke up this morning feeling like I’d run a marathon after which I was hit by a bus, dragged four blocks, and then set upon by wolves. Rehearsals are one thing; the real deal is something altogether different. Being that I haven’t played with a band for more than two years, and put out that sort of energy during a performance, it’s safe to say that I am completely and utterly out of shape. Something else I’d forgotten is how much more difficult it is to sing with a full band with regards to vocal longevity. We played for just under two hours last night and my voice is rather angry with me this morning. That too is something that I’m going to have to get used to again. Nonetheless, it was fun, and I’m looking forward to tomorrow night.

I’ve been pretty lax with regards to documenting things photographically. I’ll do my best to correct that over the next few days and post a few photos to the flickr set for the tour.

  5. Iran (Shiite Muslim); Al Qaeda (Sunni Muslim).

There’s not a chance Iran would ever help Al Qaeda. Ridiculous. That’s what’s so absurd and funny and horrifying about this.

McCain: not white people = same = enemy. Very sad.

Obama’s not perfect (i.e. favors ludicrous farm subsidies), but his approach to foreign policy overwhelming outweighs his acknowledged shortcomings.

  7. Alright Mr. Good…you need to start paying some attention to your health! Being the same age as yourself, with fitness training as my background, I’m feeling the need to bring this to your attention! You have only one place to live ~ that would be your body ~ so take care of it! I understand somewhat the energy that is required of you to perform a show [I trained a certain Barenaked Lady for a couple of years] and there is no doubt that it is draining but you can prepare and brace your body for your shows.
You’re staying in hotels which have indoor pools and fitness rooms - you can go for a swim [which feels awesome on the body and is a great overall body workout] and you can attempt to pick up a dumb bell or two or use the cross trainer. BTW Beautiful Midnight is THE BEST CD to listen to while working out!!
Put the smokes down [this comes from an ex smoker who so loved to smoke and still would if it weren't for my two girls] and get your breath back. Have you ever talked with someone with COPD or emphazema? It’s a slow death of suffocation that is self inflicted? How crazy is that? Trust me, those people would turn the clock back in a heartbeat [pardon the pun] just to get their breath back if they could.
…sorry for the ramble but I care…what would I do without my Matt Good music? Stop being so selfish and take care of yourself!!
Stay healthy and well and see you in Barrie!

  19. Nevermind. Here I am.

    Nice and hoarse for Massey…

  22. figures… i send an email and now the logon takes effect…

    Matt,

I know you’re super experienced but other than tea and lemon/ginger/honey…

vocalize a soft, low (like middle C) “aahhhhh”, nice and soft, no pressure, but focus on directing the voice by having your mind on your front two teeth.

whenever I am going overboard on the Bflat’s below high C and my voice is getting hoarse, this really helps me keep going.

Maybe during the set break you can managed 10 mins of nice soft, middle C or D aahhh’s that help put air over the folds with a soft vibration to relax them.

This is from my opera teacher, he used it in the 40 years of singing professionally.

    I hope that helps!

    Apparitions (Solo Acoustic)
    Encore:

She’s In It For The Money

It was fun for us, too. But a little weird. Plush seats and all.

Yeppers, I know… I personally asked the dude to re-enact the entire vid for me, but no such luck.. guess I will ask him again if he is on this tour, this time around……. tee hee, wouldn’t that be ’special’?

  26. I was in Belleville last night.
I have to say the sound was the best I’ve ever heard from Matt
It was too bad though that it was all seating, just a different atmopshere.
Giant as the encore was outstanding

Hey Matt, “Keep it up man your energy and intensity Tuesday night was truly amazing and I really missed it.

  29. This tour is going to be awesome!!! I am going to be unbearable in the office next wait…counting the hours and minutes now. Praying there are no flight delays. The week after I am seeing Foo Fighters @ Wembley Stadium. So, 2 weekends of contrasting gigs…but, I kid you not – guess which one I am looking forward to most??!! MATTHEW GOOD ROCKS!! I just which the rest of the world would wake up and SMELL THE COFFEE!!
    Have fun, everyone. :0)

    05 / 21 / 23:51
  30. I was at the Belleville show and it was EXCELLENT! The song highlight for me was BLACK HELICOPTERS. The full band was a nice addition to the set although the acoustic show last October was phenomenal. I think the GG Allin reference kinda went over the Belleville crowd’s heads though!! LOL.

NICE GUY ROCKER MATT GOOD CRUSHED BY RUNAWAY TRUCK WHILE PERFORMING NEW SONG “MUPPET THEATRE!! “HE COULDN’T SEE IT COMING TILL IT WAS 5 FEET AWAY” SAID ONE SHOCKED CONCERTGOER!

A live DVD (ACOUSTIC OR ELECTRIC) is begging to be made!!!!!!!!

The opening band THE SPADES were a great 3pc opener for Matt. They really shook the old place!!

    05 / 22 / 04:35
  31. It sounds like you need to get Wii Fit

    05 / 22 / 06:47
  32. I don’t know if I want to see a review from Belleville or not. There’s less than 12 hours until the Halifax show starts and I’m fidgety like an 8 year old who just ate an entire box of Lucky Charms while watching a Transformers marathon.

I hope Matt does a strict stretching regimen to loosen up those sore, neglected rockin’ out muscles.

He should bring a svelt, limber and completely hot Yoga instructor with him on this tour to get him a pre-concert zen state of mind in any way she sees fit.

    05 / 22 / 07:21
  33. Today is the day!!!!

    I can’t wait!

I have an idea, if you’re voice is bothering you you should just add in some crazy improv jams to all the songs… giving your voice a bit of rest :)

I’m going to be expecting the crowd to drag you back on stage for at least 3 encores. During this time I’d love love love to hear fated/fine art/the rat who would be king/while we were hunting rabbits/suburbia/change of seasons/enjoy the silence/ex-pats/odette/hurt/ and if you could cover a pink floyd song also… maybe speak to me/breathe?

Thanks in advance for the brilliance I’m going to experience tonight.

    05 / 22 / 08:10
  34. Tuesday nights concert was amazing…. Saw the acoustic performance in Belleville in October and loved it too.

Hoping it gets easier as it goes…. and can’t wait for the next performance at the Muppet Theatre!!!

    05 / 22 / 10:20
  35. Hey Matt,

Kicking off the summer tour in Bellevegas is much appreciated. As much as I would have preferred to see the show you’re doing tonight back home on the coast, having you swing through this newly adopted home was awesome. And as tough as it was on you to have a sitting audience, believe me, it was tough being a part of that sit-down crowd; every other time I’ve seen you it’s been shoulder-to-shoulder up and down madness and not having that during the show was odd.

Anyway, just wanted to say that, as much as you might have been feeling it during and after the show, it was absolutely fantastic and I can’t see anyone holding having to knock the rust off against you.

Top shelf, man; come back this way again.

    cheers,
    Cory

    05 / 22 / 12:49
  36. The performance by Matt & His band was phenomenal in Belleville… The impotent audience, that didn’t realize they were at a Rock concert and sat comfortably in their plush seats through many of the songs, even Hello Timebomb, had be a tad bewildered and feeling quite frustrated being that I was amongst these folks.

Having said that… none of that took away from the pure pleasure experienced for the almost 2 hours that Mr. Good and his crew rocked the Empire Theatre. We had excellent seats and were on the left side 2nd row back although, with the size of the place, I doubt it mattered where you sat.

We stood up, all 4 of us, several songs into the concert… Sadly, we started to receive threatening comments rather than getting the crowd to join in and sat down, against our will, but for our own safety… LOL. For what it was worth, we tried again after a few more songs (with some support through comments from Mr. Good himself about the fact people were sitting down) and thanks to the better-late-than-never support of the folks over in the centre, row 3. Finally, success… a reasonable number of people clued in and people at least got on their feet for the rockin’ tunes Mr. Good and his crew pumped out for the remainder of the show.

We, of course, now have no choice but to attend the Kingston, ON show as well so we can, with absolute certainty, be amongst a more ruckus and lively crowd… The Empire Theatre in Belleville seems to have excellent acoustics and so, without a doubt, we will attend any and all future concerts that Mr. Good puts on at that facility.

Enjoy the rest of the tour guys…

    05 / 22 / 18:12
  37. The Belleville show was amazing… Matt and the band really rocked the Muppet Theatre. AND the first song of the encore was “Giant”, which was my wedding song. Made my night. I can’t believe that was the first show of the tour… everything was amazing.

    05 / 22 / 18:58
  38. “We, of course, now have no choice but to attend the Kingston, ON show as well so we can, with absolute certainty, be amongst a more ruckus and lively crowd…”
YAY….count me in…though I shall be alone and, being vertically challenged (and female, hehe) MUST be at the front, or else I’ll die, surely. CAN’T WAIT. And please Matt, come to the UK soon – perhaps during the next album release??
    xx

  39. Re. Belleville Concert (Muppet Theatre)

Liked it alot, shame you never introduced your excellent band though, how rude of you!

Everything is Automatic was terrific, and I actually got up out of my “plush seat” and sang and moved around a bit to it (II must have looked a lot like the mummy rising up from the toom to the younger audience members)

About the out of shape, ridden hard and put away wet stuff, don’t worry Matt, it will only get worse as you get older!
