I’d like to start out today by saying that the thoughts of everyone here at the site are with those affected by the floods in New Brunswick.
On to the subject of net neutrality.
The reality is that we live in a day and age in which websites such as this, and millions besides, are one of the last true bastions of independent published thought and opinion. Over the last decade they have become a serious threat to controlled media. Let’s make sure it remains that way.

I second the thought out to those on the east coast- I have been watching the news intently for the last few days, whenever I can. I have many friends there and in surrounding areas and am praying for their safety. Things are just things and are replaceable, but it is hard to comprehend and accept when you actually have to start all over again and come out of something horrible, with absolutely nothing.
Hang in there!!

Very thought provoking video! I had no idea the internet was at risk.
(but am not surprised given it’s power). Net neutrality is VITAL and must be ensured.
p.s. everyone in manitoba is also praying for N.B.

That terrified me.

Not that many years ago I started out working with an web pioneer. He died, in a sports car accident, having never realised his vision (selling property). Today, only a couple f decades down the line, the web is everything. It feeds our very existence. i don’t see any other choice…

This is a very interesting video. On one hand, we seems like a very real threat. But I hope/wonder that as Gen-Y (maybe X too) and younger generations rise into places of power (generally people who understand the internet) that this will become less of an issue (as long as the tables don’t turn before we get there). Then again, I am often too much of an idealist.

Finally, I’ve been waiting a long time for you mention this issue Matt, thankyou!
I’d just like to say that there is a Net Neutrality Rally on Parliament Hill on May 27th,
with both representatives from the NDP and the Liberals speaking, with many more speakers to be added, however I don’t believe there are any musicians perfoming yet, nudge, nudge!
Details are at this link:

Thanks for the video link. It’s very scary indeed.

One of the reasons the net is at risk is file sharing. Believe it or not, organizations like the RIAA have jumped all over AT&T/Vorizon/et. al. for their support in controlling/policing content. The only people who care about the blogs are members of CSIS/CIA/NSA/CSEC/FBI/RCMP. The corporations are far less concerned about what you blog or what pictures you post. They just want to know how can they make money!
Organizations that are trying to cut out the freedom, because they feel it interferes with their profits (RIAA etc..) spin things such that Telco’s can have their cake and eat it to.
Who gets screwed? Same as always, the consumers.
Technically, all the hardware is owned by the Telco’s. But they forget we pay to use it however we please. When you rent a car, you are to drive it, they can’t tell you “You can drive it but not on Broadway, only 12th” or “you can drive it but not to McDonald’s, only Burger King”. The only way to really do this is keep standing up and write in. Maybe we should all pool $20 per person and bribe politicians, that seems to work better than our voices and letters. It works for the corporations! Whoever gives the most $$$ gets the attention of the government as a whole.
I like the video very much, a nice summary. The concept, as I mentioned before, was originally DOD and came into fruition a lot longer that 15 yrs ago. Only universities and state-departments were using it though. The original idea of packet routing, as shown at the start, began in 1966/67.
Thanks Matt for the post!

Thanks a bunch Goofy, what a charming response. I live in England. You may have heard of it. It’s a teeny weeny island overcrowded with ignorant people who don’t know where Canada is…
I am afraid our news here in the UK didn’t report on it. Did you see the news about the terrible flooding we endured here recently, when Sheffield was virtually submerged? No, I thought not..
I made a genuine enquiry, having just logged on very late at night after an intense day at work.
Yes, believe it or not, I am intelligent enough to have a career…quite a lucrative one, actually, in advertising. It pays enough to allow me to blow half a month’s salary to fly to Toronto for 2 days see Matthew in Kingston at the end of the month.

I’m in NB! :) thanks for thinking of us. I’ll see you *again* Matt, on the 24th in Fredericton. Your venue is dry. ;)
(I’m the one who prattled on about WordPress. *sigh* I’ll try and be less dorky this time, I swear.)
Anyway, all the heavy rains in Ontario, Quebec and Maine, coupled with the snow finally melting - which was record hitting this winter - means all this water is heading down the Saint John river. This river cuts through NB on its way to the Atlantic. There’s plenty of low-lying areas that haven’t flooded like this in… well, long as I can remember. I’m dry where I am and hubby can make it to work. He has to cross the river at Hartland and says it’s pretty high there.
And net neutrality - yeah I’ve been writing online a long, long time. We need all the dissenting voices we can get. Individual expression is an important thing for *everyone*. (I’m tired - that’s all I got. :D ) Going against media & their perceptions can be an uphill battle at times. See, I homeschool my kids and… yeah, you just thought of a stereotype right there, didn’t you? :D But our family is normal, and in good days outright fantastic.
And my oldest daughter is one of Matt’s biggest fans and his posts have lead to interesting household discussions and *education*. Not sheltering, not bias, as our kids are allowed to have differing opinions than us.
whoa, tangent. :D

Thanks for the video, Matt.

As someone in Fredericton, I must say, this flooding is ridiculous. I had no idea how bad it was until I walked downtown and saw it myself. Unfortunately my girlfriend’s grandparents owned waterfront property and their house is completely flooded.

My heart goes out to those suffering the consequences of the floods in NB as well.
Good video on net neutrality - it really sums it up quite well. I really hope this is a battle we can win against controlled media. There are rumours of a June election coming up, but I am doubtful. If there is, however, you can bet that I’ll be contacting my MP’s to let them know how young voters feel about net neutrality, and getting others to do the same.
I’d hate to see this excellent little website be drowned out by the corporate web.

As I am sure anyone in Ontario and most of canada knows, Bell and Rogers have both been throttling traffic for years (though never directly admitting it). In fact rogers is one of the few ISPs in the world that throttle all encrypted traffic so they can curb peer to peer transfers, which in turn slows down things like VPN for legitimate work purposes. Now Rogers has instituted a download/upload cap in a tiered way, with people paying 65/month for the fastest package getting only 100gigs a month as a sum of upload/download (most people are getting 60 gigs a month at $45) and charing $2 a gig more up to $25 as a overage charges. Bell has been doing this for years as well but now with rogers hoping on board, there is no where else to run. These two companies own the internet in most of Canada. Even if you go to an outside company, they rent their lines off Bell/Rogers, who in turn throttle all traffic even more and will eventually start to charge their renters for overages on their lines.
The internet is suppose to be a place where you can go and do what you want without being stopped by anyone and these two companies have shut out an entire province to net neutrality. Who knows, maybe they are just trying to grab all the money they can before something like the grid can be implemented into commercial applications, effectively killing them (for those of you who don’t know about the grid, http://www.memphisrap.com/cgi-bin/content/pub9990263694155.cgi?itemid=9990285095284 ). The grid is basically the internet on a week long crack binge. You would be able to download a full HD movie in 3 seconds.

I think the banger racing goes up as far as Sheffield (not sure if that is where you live) Now that is real motorsport, everything is mangled beyond recognition, the chance of something blowing up at any point is good/very good, and a bunch of pikey type monkeys hammering broken oily bits back on to the ‘cars’ for another few smashes :) Plus, its 75% you’ll get pickpocketed, stabbed, or get food poisoning from the burger vans probably operating illegally and almost certainly ran by people who dont wash their hands. You cant beat that.

True, Hamilton has made me somewhat more interested in F1 after the Schumacher years.. He did phenomenally well last season, I was up at 4am in a bar in Sydney watching the last race live to see if he could clinch it, ah well, he’s got a big future. McClaren dont seem to be able to get their shit together this season for some reason, they look a little off the pace. Speaking of which, tell me, you’re a fan, why cant Honda reclaim their racing pedigree? They are purebred racing through and through that company, and yet their results since going their own way from BAR havent been convincing. They are failing again this year and it bothers me! The world’s largest engine manufacturer, they obviously know their stuff. That, combined with the fact Jensen Button is one of the most naturally gifted racing drivers in decades of F1, let alone British racing, and matched with a loyalty to the H badge regardless of his lack of success makes him a real jewel in their crown. Barichello hasnt gelled with the car since day one in my opinion, and although their problem was suspension two seasons ago in that they couldnt transfer the power to the tyres effectively in the exits of the corners, it seems to now be something different. Get it fixed!!! (My CRX is fine though :P)
