Absolutely no one, and I mean no one, does it better than Tom Waits. No guest lists, no merchandise at his shows – just music. Music and genius…

Couldn’t decide on a title?
May 5th, 2008 at 11:59 am
I just heard he’s touring starting June 17th. The closest stop to where I live is in St. Louis which is at least a 12 hour drive. It’s a trip I’d surely be willing to make pending ticket availabillity.
I’ve been revisiting “Bone Machine” as of late and musical genious describes that album perfectly.
Orphans was great too but how can you out do songs like “In the Colessium” and “Dirt in the Ground”?
One of my favorite artists and always will be. I’m sure his live show is a life experience.

He sure has been doing it long enough…the guy is a living legend. No bullshit.

Matthew, you are too modest…I hear it is all Music&Genius at your shows too. I will find out for myself in Kingston :0)
Don’t stop the merchandise though – I aim to stuff my suitcase full!!
Seriously, you are right – TW is a genius who doesn’t give a flying f*ck…
xx

Yep. Genius. I already said this to my friend earlier today…forget Elvis - the future is weddings by Tom Waits impersonators, in Phoenix. I think I’m going to have to watch Mystery Men again tonight.
May 5th, 2008 at 12:28 pm
That was damn cool.
May 5th, 2008 at 12:34 pm
Um.. I do not know him, though I have heard his name before, that’s it.
He seems inebriated or high or something.
it’s very creative, but quite outthere for me, so I guess I don’t know him or I would understand it better.

The Tom Waits and Keith Richards of the world rock MY world!!!!
May 5th, 2008 at 12:41 pm
Holy Crap! That just made my day.
…and now I have to go listen to Christmas Card From A Hooker In Minneapolis.
May 5th, 2008 at 1:04 pm
Tom Waits is indeed great, saw him at the Bridge School last year.
“Hold On” is one of my favorite songs ever………just great stuff.
May 5th, 2008 at 1:04 pm
His voice gets better all the time - sounds like a bag of gravel soaked in bourbon. It’s hard to tell with him whether he’s acting all the time, or never at all - which is why he’s great.

angelboo Couldn’t decide on a title? watch the video!
I never understood merchandise and T-Shirts. Why in the world would I buy overpriced shit? I’m coming to hear you and your music that’s it. You wouldn’t buy shit from where I work and wear it around even if I gave it to you and paid you to wear it. I don’t subscribe to myself being a human billboard.

I saw this tour coming up on Pitchfork today and I’m glad you posted this.
I wish he could find some corresponding zodiac pattern for Canada, but I guess it’s harder to do on three cities.

Redbaron speak for yourself, dude.. I walk around with my HM bag with pride!!!!
May 5th, 2008 at 2:07 pm
Pretty profound.
That just made my day.
May 5th, 2008 at 2:08 pm
I couldn’t agree more, Matt.
I got up and turned the computer on at 6:00 this morning to catch the “press conference”.
Looks like I’ll be flying down from Boston on the July 4th weekend to catch the Birmingham and Atlanta shows (two years ago, it was flying to Tennessee to catch the Memphis and Nashville shows).
Matt, did you catch him in Vancouver back in 2004?
May 5th, 2008 at 2:12 pm
who doesn’t enjoy holding pretend press conferences?

I’m just gonna throw this out there and say Matt Good is better… Also Hawksley Workman! But yes, Mr. Waits is also pretty cool.
May 5th, 2008 at 2:37 pm
he is one of the greatest. all his albums are amazing but i think rain dogs is one of his best. eventually id love to see him
May 5th, 2008 at 2:40 pm
Started listening to “Small Change” in the 70’s, and he just keeps going and going!
Would love to see a live show but unlikely in Wpg. :(
May 5th, 2008 at 3:01 pm
Bizarre. I don’t really know much about the man. I think that people who like him would dig PJ Harvey tho. She’s my favourite colour. I listen to her all day almost everyday.
May 5th, 2008 at 4:08 pm
I’m not completely familiar with most of Tom Waits’ music, but I will say this: that was fucking clever. :)

You buy overpriced shit everywhere. That’s the western world. Wearing a band shirt isn’t quite the same as wearing a shirt with the words GAP on it. The later is much more like a billboard. It’s entire purpose is to make more money. Band merch often helps support the musicians, especially if they’re not well known. It also says something about you as a person. It tells people what kind of music you’re into. If I’m wearing a shirt that says “Cuff the Duke” on it, I would be very happy if people went and looked them up because they saw my shirt. As far as I’m concerned, if my shirt is going to say something, it might as well say something good. =)

Am I the only one reminded vaguely of Rod Bruno? I kept expecting him to say, “Play that fucking devil’s on roller skates song!”
May 6th, 2008 at 4:51 am
fucking brilliant. the ending was the ‘wow’ factor for me.
May 6th, 2008 at 5:37 am
LMAO - I love Tom Waits.. wish I could have seen that earlier in the day, but NO work blocks the damn video’s. (I will find a way around “Websense”)
KET. No you are not the only one..I am reminded of Rod as well when I see Tom.
May 6th, 2008 at 7:25 am
im pretty sure i heard something about actress Scarlett Johansson doing an album of Tom Waits covers. i also heard it SUCKED.
May 6th, 2008 at 8:51 am
You are right Matt, I think Tom Waits is a genius. I also believe that your music is truly original and has an ability to become even most satisfying the more it is heard…just my two cents… can’t wait to see you on tour this summer…

Oh sweet jesus, that would be insane….
May 7th, 2008 at 12:20 am
If I remember correctly, Tom has been sober for 18 years now, since being with his wife and collaborator Kathleen Brennan.
He’s also worked with Keith Richards on Rain Dogs (guitar and backing vocals on some tracks), and Bone Machine (co-wrote played and co-lead vocal on song “That Feel”).
May 25th, 2008 at 2:12 am
Mr. Good, you should over one of his songs, like Time from “Rain Dogs”. As evidenced by Scarlett Johansson’s recent album of Waits covers, there’s a terrible shortage of great Waits covers out there.
Or maybe he’s just so good it’s hard to cover him worth a damn?
