For those of you that have been following along, you’ve probably noticed that the shows thus far have all had very similar set lists, with a few changes here and there. I wanted to comment on this as I’ve received a few emails about it.
The reason for such a regimented set list is that I am contemplating recording the upcoming Massey Hall show, which would then be released as a live record. Nothing has been finalized yet, mind you, but if I do decide to do it, given that this is a new band that only has a finite number of songs under its belt, I wanted to ensure that we had somewhat mastered a regimented and fluid set prior to that performance, which is three shows away, not counting tonight’s performance in Fredericton.
Another reason is that the band only knows a limited number of songs within the context of my catalogue, which is rather large. That being the case, requests for certain songs unfortunately can’t be met because they simply haven’t been learned, nor has there been time to learn them. We are, in every sound check, working on adding material, and are at present working up a full band version of Apparitions.
If you’re coming to the show tonight here in Fredericton, have fun!

Excellent stuff. I was front row center last night in moncton and you’ve never been better in concert. The band is really great. I was gonna head to the bus last night to try and say hello, but there seemed to be way too many people back there.

Hey Matt!
The last time you played at Club Soda in Montreal, I got harassed by a bouncer for taking a couple pictures. The odd thing about this was that you were promoting fan taken pictures on your website. Was an incident like this caused by venue demands or your own?
If it was your own wishes, I have no trouble leaving my camera at home when you play this Friday. Otherwise, is there any way of knowing if pictures are allowed at the shows on this tour?

any decision on a record label yet?

Hopefully there won’t be as much random yelling from the balconies at Massey. I’ll do my part to start up the chant for Giant, which would be really cool for a live cd with the crowd singing and whatnot.

Looking forward to seeing the show in Toronto. I’ve never been to one of your shows before due to the demands of school, but I really hope you decide to record this show. I’ve played at Massey Hall with large bands before and the concerts have always been recorded, and Massey Hall has Great acoustics for recording.
Hope you make the decision to record it.

I think it depends on the venue. Matt has so many show pics that were taken by fans that I think he has jsut realized that it is kind of a hard thing to stop. I would see if you can find out anything on the venue’s policy on camera’s and if they don’t allow it… then either leaver it at home (if you so wish)…but I would just sneak it in and be discrete about it. Just don’t pull it out in front of bouncer and start talking pictures… and remember not to use your flash. When taking pictures at concerts the pics normally turn out better not using a flash anyway… plus having a flash on is a little annoying, not only for those in front of you… but also for the performer.
Cheers…. enjoy the show!!!

I could be wrong here… but I think what was meant by “those following along” n(regarding set lists… was meaning those going to multiple shows or following “the tour”. I haven’t seen any set lists posted by Matt exept for the one he posted during rehearsals of songs that “might” be played and the other set list that another fan…”silent bob” posted on the “Thursday, Halifax” post that Is a few below this one.

My husband and I just returned from your Fredericton show. WOW, it was a very impressive performance!! My favorite show of yours, and I have seen you 4 times here in Fredericton.
Unfortunately I missed your acoustic show (tickets went on sale while I was away).
Very happy to hear a few tunes off Avalanche. Hospital music and Avalanche are my 2 favorite albums. YOU ROCK!! And your band is very good. The sound was really amazing tonight, which surprised me considering the venue. Yes, I’m a very happy and satisfied fan.

Awesome show tonight! I was worried before hand that the sound was going to be bad in the exhibition center, but it sounded great!! And I was right up front and enjoyed every min.
Thanks Matt for meeting the fans after the show. I have been wanting to say hi for 12 years. It was worth the wait :)

Hey Matt.
The show tonight in Fredericton was amazing. The band sounded fantastic, and the enthusiasm of everyone on stage tonight really showed. Yeah, I think Club Soda even has signs posted about “No Photography”. But as taraden said, turn your flash feature off. The flash is distracting to the performers, plus it’s a giveaway to the venue security that you’re taking pics. I’m not sure if I will bring my camera, but we’ll see.

I have no idea why I’m up this early, but last night’s show in Fredericton was awesome. The energy was good, the band was great, and you could tell Matt was having a good time up on stage.
As for pictures, with increasingly smaller cameras & cell phones, kinda hard to confiscate ‘em all. There was a good 50 people at any given time holdign thier gear up and clickining. you coudl see tiny LCD screens everywhere.
I had my big-ass camera, flash off, and stayed discreete. Security ducked out of my way a couple times. ;) I filled my camera card too.
I mentioned to Matt afterwards that I took a buttload of shots (I’m uploading to Flickr as we speak) and he said “Fantastic!” I’ll be back with a link.

You were fantastic in Fredericton last night! ‘Champions of Nothing’ was nothing short of fucking epic. What a way to open a show! And my roommates and I always enjoy your hilarious between-songs banter.
I met you afterward, thanked you for playing here. I mean it. So few artists even spot New Brunswick on a map, hit the big cities and that’s it. Given that you’re a long-time favourite of mine, I consider myself extremely lucky that you’re one of the few who frequently performs here!

Awesome show last night. Aside from the one annoying girl who wouldn’t stop shouting “Invasion 1! Play Invasion 1!” in my ear, the show was perfect (I sometimes wonder if those people have ever been to a concert before or have any idea how they work). My girlfriend and I were front row center, and we both agreed that the show was nothing less than amazing. I also must give credit to your band for doing an awesome job of learning and mastering your songs in such a short amount of time. It felt almost like they had been playing with you for years. The Spades were a pretty good opening act. I hadn’t heard of them before, but they put on a great live performance.
Hopefully you enjoyed playing here just as much this time as you did on the acoustic tour. We’d be saddened if we were left out of any future tour plans (whenever in the future those may be).

A live record would be amazing, saw you in Halifax and would definitely have paid for a recording.

Great show last night! The banter between the songs is still cracking me up… Though I was tempted to smack the two guys outside the bus that were chanting “PLAY RICO” at the top of their lungs.
Thanks for meeting us after the show as well, I know there’s so many artists out there who wouldn’t do something like that, so it really means a lot

I thought last year’s acoustic show at Massey had some “Live Album” worthy performances.
I imagine it would be difficult to recoup all the costs involved in the production of such a show. I think you mentioned in the past that there is a significant fee paid to “xxx - hall” for the sale of any performances at Massey (?).

Wasn’t an acoustic Massey Hall show recorded last tour? A double disk album with a full band and acoustic show in Massey would blow my mind.

Yeah, I never use my flash anyway. Perhaps I’ll try again. It was just annoying having a bouncer trying to prove his masculinity over a fan taking a picture sans flash. “If I see you take one more picture with that thing, I’m going to break it”

The show last night kicked all sorts of ass. Avalanche, I’m a Window, 99% and Giant in particular killed. And, well, you played Single Explosion– I’m a happy, happy girl; it was as amazing as I’d anticipated. It was awesome to see you lose yourself in playing at times.
(The venue last night? Not so great. Those giant tiddlywinks dangling from the rafters? Yeah, we noticed them too. And what the hell was with the doors only opening at 8? And some of the crowd… ugh. I’m a little old to have any patience for idiots tossing full beers in other people’s faces and resulting drunken brawls requiring several security personnel to break it up. Jesus.)
It was great to finally meet you, too. I’m sure you remember me– I’m the one who said “Can you sign this, please?” and “Wow, really great show” and grinned a lot. (God. Many apologies for how fucking mundane I was. I’m not good in artificial situations like that.) (While I’m at it, apologies for my (drunk) husband asking you about Courtney Love. What the hell was that about? Though, I have to say, your answer still has him and his pal laughing today.)
Anyway– great experience. And if you still have room on your crew, I’m an awesome Button Tech.

Hey Matt. I doubt you get the chance to read all of the many, many comments on here but I wanted to thank you for playing so much off of Hospital Music at Fredericton last night, 99% of Us Is Failure, in particular; it’s my fav song off the new album. I was hoping you would play it and you didn’t disappoint! :)
I’m not sure what you had in mind when you wrote it, but every word hit even harder last night for me. My mom called me and I was talking to her while waiting in line for the show. She told me that my sister-in-law had about a week to live–only the day before had they said a month. She is terminally ill with ovarian cancer and is only 26 or 27– I can’t remember exactly. She had married my brother only two years ago. Last year she lost her only remaining ovary so they could’nt have children and now the cancer has spread and she is near death. They have only known each other 5 years. Every word of 99% resonated more with me last night . I am not sure how my brother is feeling exactly–he puts on a brave face–but I think it must be close to what your song describes.
I have been listening to your music ever since Underdogs (and later picked up Last of the Ghetto Astronauts when I found out there was a previous album) and I’ve always said, the un-released songs were the true gems. Besides 99% and Odette, songs like Suburbia, House of Smoke and Mirrors, While We Were Hunting Rabbits, Advertising on Police Cars, I, The Throw Away, The Rat Who Would Be King, Running For Home, Every Name is my Name and The Fine Art of Falling Apart (a HUGE personal fav of mine) have gotten me through so many hard times in my life and I am ever grateful for them and the man and sometimes the band behind them.
Speaking of the band, they were excellent and the show last night was stunning. The energy onstage from yourself and bandmates was amazing. I also wanted to mention that I’ve seen you a few times and never have I heard Apparitions played so beautifully as the version played last night. I would love to have a live copy of that rendition!! I live in Saint John and I was excited to hear that the concert here will be acoustic. I missed the acoustic tour in Freddy because it was sold out and I had waited too long to buy tickets! Not sure if I’ll make it tonite or not but I’m sure it’ll be a stellar performance. Have fun and hopefully I’ll see ya again soon :)

trust me you werent missing much sitting on the bleachers in the drinking section, well if you were on the bottom anyway–the top would’ve been good. some drunk chick in stillettos carrying a beer in each hand tried to climb over me and spilled beer all over me!!! iI wasn’t even drinking and reeked all the rest of the night. This was before the concert even started. It was funny because another chick tried to come over and climb between me and a woman later and I told her “no way, not happening–I’ve already had beer spilled over me once already!!” and I didn’t budge!! ahhahaha!
seriously though, the venue sucked ass. My friend called it an airplane hanger. Now aint that the truth!!!

Quoting andrea_r:
Yeah, the venue seemed poorly set up for anyone on the dry side, though I wasn’t complaining because I was front and center on the other side. I almost felt guilty for getting to cross into the good section while all the other people who showed up super early were stuck off to the side, whereas a friend of mine showed up in line almost an hour after I did, and there were only a couple people between him and I in the crowd. I’m glad that I didn’t go to many concerts when I was young.
As for the location itself, I actually didn’t find it that bad. I guess that I’m used to shows in all sorts of venues, so I hardly think about it. As for the drunken people, I was lucky in that I didn’t really have to see many of them during the show (very few of them seemed to get up near the front of the crowd, which I was thankful for), but I did get to experience a lot of them during the walk home. Every second street was full of underage drunk kids. They’re not nearly as funny as they think they are…

At risk of flogging a dead horse into mulch, I loved your Fredericton show. Having to leave at 11 for work sucked, but I’m so thankful that you played Weapon so early on. I e-mailed you a month or so back to ask if it would be in the line-up; It’s sort of mine & my partner’s song, so hearing it live with him was great. Now I’m just envious of my roommate who was able to stay to the end and sing your praises to your face. Much success and good fortune.

For Patrick Pitt :
Yes, once upon a time Matt played Sweetwaters here in Fredericton.I called it the Rodeo tour (as you know Sweetwaters and the Rocking Rodeo are one bar now) and the night before, in Moncton, he played the Rocking Rodeo there. I was at the show at Sweets and it was possibly the worst set up for ANY show Ive ever seen. If you can believe it, the stage was set up lower than the crowd. So, anyone under 5ft”5″ didnt see a thing haha. Im not exactly sure what year this was (perhaps around 2000), but I do know that Wil was his opening act and I also remember matt making fun of both the venue and that it was the first time he had played a show in which the stage sat lower than the crowd. I dont think there has been a show at Sweets since haha….but, none the less Matt made the best of it and I remember walking away thinking it was a great show despite it being at Sweets…
I made the show at the playhouse last october which was incredible!, but, due to my wife going through the immigration process right now and them sucking $2,000 from me I was unable to get the funds to make the show which killed me…but, thanks to all for posting the pics and videos on utube haha..glad to hear everyone had fun!
