Television

How do people do it – watch television? After exhausting every film on the Video On Demand feature in my room this week, I have been forced to turn to regular television over the last few days, and let me tell you, I have no idea how people watch television in this day and age. The sheer number of commercials utterly stupefies me.

The other night I was watching a film on a local channel, The A Channel, and I swear that every 10 to 15 minutes there was a commercial break that was just as long as the section of the film that I had just viewed. I see now why TVO is so popular.

This is the primary reason that I no longer own a television, despite the fact that it would be nice to get HBO, The Comedy Network, and a few others. I have flirted with the idea of getting Apple TV, which Dale swears by, but will wait until after I replace this laptop and get an iPhone, which I should have done a while ago for numerous reasons. Being that I am a film collector, and own over 500 films, a part of me doesn’t want to lose the weekly ritual of researching what films are being released and adding them to my collection. It’s my biggest hobby.

I have today off; though have a multitude of things to do before leaving tonight. I am very much looking forward to starting the tour tomorrow, not to mention frequenting a certain old school diner near the theatre.

Anyway, I should get on with it.

I’ve recently made the realization that the sound of the TV makes me irritable…even if someone else has it on in the room and it’s in the background. I hate it - rarely watch it and the only thing I have it for is sports. Which is why I own a very old TV that bleeds orange/red and makes everyone’s heads look they’re going to explode.

Good luck with the tour…I know you’ve worked extremely hard for it.

  2. Tyelly Says:

ZOMG! But what about reality TV?! Jk.
Go rip ‘er up on that tour! C yaz in Winnipeg!

  3. deb Says:

I seriously need to proof read before I publish. Or starting going to bed before 3 am.

  4. deb Says:

    Oh damn…see? I give up.

  5. Matthew Good Says:

The reality shows are the worst. Things like celebrity rehab and that other one about making your kid a star. It’s a sick, exploitative world we live in, let me tell you.

  6. jclark Says:

I can’t stand watching TV live, but with my schedule, I rarely get a chance. Tivo is the only thing that keeps me tuned in, since I can easily skip the commercials. That being said, I’m watching more shows on the web- the commercial spots are usually limited to 3 or 4 :30 second spots by one advertiser. The other night, I actually sat down to watch The Office live, and got pissed when I instinctively picked up the remote to zip through the commercials and couldn’t.

  7. angelboo Says:

I hate TV. Shows that are on for a 1 hour time slot are really only about 30 to 35 minutes long. It is absurd, the later in the evening the more food commercial that are on and all the duplicated commercials within a particular time slot…I can’t stand it,. I have not had anytime lately to sit and watch TV… and I don’t miss it one bit!

    Good Luck!

  8. Morglor9 Says:

I haven’t watched TV by my own personal choice in years, and I haven’t missed it. This of course makes me really easy to watch TV with, because I really don’t care what you watch. To me, it’s all trash. Yesterday my family was upstairs watching Family Guy, and I walked in and sat down with them because I figured it might be nice to join them. I got pissed off at it after about five minutes, got up, swore under my breath, and went outside.

  9. Jon Dehm Says:

Even the Weather Network isn’t sacred. It’s usually faster for me to boot up my MacBook and go to their website than to wait for the commercial to finish and tell me what it’s like outside.

  10. deb Says:

If you told someone 50 years ago that there’d be shows like these on TV, they’d probably say you were crazy.

  11. Raina Says:

have you been to a movie theatre latley Matt? 15$ at least to get in and you watch 10-15 minutes of commcericals before your 10 minutes of movie previews.

  12. Brent Says:

DVD sets have become my main source of viewing entertainment. My current nightly ritual is the BBC Planet Earth set. I highly recommend it.

It’s funny you mention that Child Star show because I caught a few minutes of it last night. Why aren’t people upset about this show? It’s the most blatant form of child exploitation I’ve seen yet. We all know that this stuff goes on but I’m amazed that it’s now considered primetime entertainment to watch horrible parents mistreat their children.

I don’t know. TV is depressing.

I think Family Guy is the funniest show ever, animation or otherwise.

  14. oiler3535 Says:

Raina, I agree that the commercials before movies are damn annoying, but the trailers I like. Gives you an idea of what’s coming out that you may not have heard of. Just don’t forget to add food and drink into you 15 dollar admission!

  15. Nhu Says:

You don’t even have to use TVO because many TV shows are on the internet.

  16. Monkey Says:

TV is horrible. I only keep my cable because I was waiting for Curb Your Enthusiasm to end, and then Californication started and there’s supposed to be a new season this summer. After that, I’m canceling it. Everything good makes its way to DVD now so there’s really no point in having it.

Reality shows make me beyond nauseous.

Depending what time you leave tonight, and which way your hotel room faces, you might be able to see fireworks tonight…happy trails!

  17. polarbear Says:

I favor educational networks such as the history channel, discovery channel, and animal planet to name a few.
My one dog is hilarious when he sees dogs on animal planet. He will run up to the TV and start barking and then sit and stare. As far as shows to make your kids a star, ones that exploit little girls in beauty pagents are pretty sick IMOP. This is one prime example of parents living out their own fantasies through their children.

  18. angelboo Says:
If you told someone 50 years ago that there’d be shows like these on TV, they’d probably say you were crazy.
If you would have told someone 50 years ago that TV would be no good, cost $90.00 per month to be able to watch absolutely NOTHING of worth, and would become a child’s best friend, they probably wouldn’t have made it!!! Well I hope they would not have.

My stepsons, are limited to the amount of time they can watch TV, if there were no limits, they would be zombies, staring off into space as they became more and more intoxicated, a river of drool would flow from their mouths…. I had seen the beginning stages of TV Stuper Disease and had to stop it as soon as I could…

The boys said that TV “cures their boredom” …My response was “ZIP IT, turn the damn thing off and get your ass’s outside. NOW!”

  19. tiffanychantelle Says:

Tv is ridiculous… I tried to watch Saturday Night Live the other week and the amount of commercials made me angry and resentful of the television.

  20. cuttooth84 Says:

arrrgh…I put the TV on for five minutes and I have to shut it off. Commercials have gotten so bad now, that they even squeese in the same commercials, two or three times in that block of show of a half hour.

I hope our world doesn’t turn out like a Huxley’s book called “brave new world” where people use the commercials slogans repeatedly in their daily conversations. That would just be messed up. :(

  21. kbernardp Says:

Hold on the iPhone. AT&T Wireless hasn’t implemented the G3 network yet. Your download speeds will be painfully slow unless you’re able to find an unsecure hotspot.

  22. Duane Storey Says:

Advertising is ruining most mediums. I used to like going to the movies with friends, but now there are 30 minutes of commercials on most films, and it’s just not enjoyable anymore.

Also, rumour has it the Vancouver Apple store is opening in June, just in time for the launch of the new 3G iPhone in Canada.

  23. Nick Says:

I hate commercials. If you subscribe to the movie channels (60-63, and i think 67 and 68 on Shaw in Vancouver) there are no commercials. Although I have to admit they come in handy for bathroom or snack breaks.

  24. Stormydog Says:
The reality shows are the worst. Things like celebrity rehab and that other one about making your kid a star. It’s a sick, exploitative world we live in, let me tell you.
I have to agree there. I can’t abide that stuff; Saturday evenings are full of it. And I stick to the BBC when possible (no adverts). Can’t wait til next year when they get the rights to broadcast the F1 races… :0)
Although I’ve visited Canada and the States on several occasions I don’t really recall what the TV ads are like over there. Here, I swear that every commercial break will feature a 20 second spot with some Z-list ‘celeb’ trying to sell me a sofa.
Apple TV is great, by the way. Like everything Apple it just…works.

  25. Stormydog Says:

Sorry, I forgot to add – have a GREAT tour. I can’t wait for Kingston. Enjoy!!

  26. Susie Says:

Thank god for the BBC. Though I think it was £120 I had to pay this year to fund their commercial free status, so even that comes at a price.

  27. jnifer Says:

I am disgusted by television also. Those absolute waste of time reality shows are ridiculous. I mean come on, My Child Is A Star, how wrong is that? Stop exploiting your child for crying out loud, and go play in the dirt with them. I have a 7 year old, and I dont have cable for the simple fact that television is a complete waste of time and I won’t allow her to spend any amount of time consuming the bs that is on their. How about going outside and playing or going for a walk?

  28. sarah-renee` Says:

Not to mention most films were not made for TV are so butchered to fit their time slot you end up missing half the movie! God forbid they actually cut out a commercial to make the movie fit.

  29. Tuuli22 Says:

The most acutal nonsense on german TV are faked “law and order shows”. Seriously, german TV knows of 4 different judges in “reality shows” minimum - there we have a family court judge, a juvenile court judge, a custodial judge, a criminal judge. I constantly ask myself about the sense of watching people screw up, getting arrested then abusing the judge and witnesses (this about to fill out most of the program) in the courtroom and finally being sentenced.
There’s also shows where you can watch “ordinary people” attending family therapy, have their kids trained the right behaviour, seek a husband/wife, get married, leave their husbands/wives, get a job, get a new style, exchange their families for 10 days, emigrate to a foreign country, get their pets trained, get a drivers license…
It’s so hilarious, bad acting, bad stories - sheer down-dumbing.

  30. Eli Says:

the season finale of “House” is on tonight…Now THERE’S something worth watching.

  31. chels Says:

I was actually thinking about this last night actually. I was watching Sin City on TV, and I was wondering if the movie was even coming back on. Like you know how ussually the the whole Viewers Discretion is Advised warning pops up right before they return to the show/movie? Well it poped up three times and then went back to commercials instead of going back to the show! I was like what the fuck is this? TV sucks!

  32. KBryce Says:

I will admit I am hooked on Lost and Battlestar Galactica. I don’t even notice the commericials. I do laundry during the breaks and other quick chores like taking out the trash. There are some excellent programs on TV right now, but the amount of crap TV is insane. I keep hoping the reality trend will run itself out.

  33. Phaedra Says:

I haven’t had cable for almost 4 years. I do own a decent size tv, with a vhs collection of old b cult/horror films, and I really enjoy renting HBO/Showcase series, and watching them back to back and commercial free. I’ve got too much other stuff going on to get sucked onto my couch to watch the crap drivel that is spewed out on most tv screen across the nation.

looking forward to you show on the 26th :)

  34. D. Lilly Says:

TV is god. All hail. All worship

  35. satchboogieca Says:

I watch cable when I go home to visit my family. I don’t have a TV and I don’t want one. However, every time I visit my family I get distracted by the idiot box.

I like watching CSI, and my fav channels are A&E (for historical stuff, documentaries, CSI/24, and the occaissional movie, despite LONG commercial breaks), TLC, DISCOVERY, and HIST. Sometimes the Comedy network (I like The Colbert Report) and sometimes movies.

I too am a movie buff, many on VHS and now more on CD/DVD. I even replaced VHS with DVD so I can watch them on my laptop (also an MBP - 03/2007) as the VHS are useless without the TV (I have a VCR).

Other than that, I’d rather play with GarageBand, play my guitar, annoy my neighbours by practicing my opera singing, spend time with my soon-to-be fiance, cycle, work on GNU/Linux driver development etc… all of that over TV.

I even cut back in movie watching to do those other things.

500 is quite impressive, too bad we were not neighbours, I’m sure your collection would be stellar to rent from.

You mean like this website? I can’t even read Matthew Good’s musings without people muttering about their latest Apple purchases.

  37. mscamm Says:

Aw..a cozy diner. I wonder if Statler & Waldorf will make the show..?
I think of them often , when I attend the theatre….lol

  38. Shawnmeat Says:

    Yes.

    Yes.

I haven’t watched television regularly in years, so now when I return to the behemoth I feel as though I’m observing our commercial culture in the midst of some sort of embarrassing seizure. Like Steve Buscemi’s character in the fantastic Ghost World, I see it as little more than shrill, cynical. ignorant prattle at speeds designed to leave someone with a throbbing headache. And since most of my friends still enjoy the damned thing, I often feel like some sort of snob when I offer such observations. I don’t mean to be!

Sure, there are good-quality programs - thanks to stations such as HBO, or even Bravo or Showcase. I do regularly miss hockey games, and that makes me sad (I don’t receive great reception where I live, so even a reliable source such as CBC is sketchy at best), and I am forced to find Stewart and Colbert online (when, you know, the Comedy Network’s website works), but in the end I think it’s worth it. And yes, I am a gigantic movie buff as well.

    Congrats!!!

  43. jenn Says:

I don’t do tv….I do the Matt Good site :-) Actually, I’m a bit addicted to the computer. My passion is health and fitness so I find myself on it for those reasons and then some sillyness like facebook. I will confess that I watch two shows a week [I don't wanna talk about it ~ one's a little desperate and the other's about survivial lol] We all need a bit of mindless activity and those are my two vices! You are so right about the commercials - the advertising and shaping of minds is a wee bit frightening. Can you imagine it from a childs’ perspective?
With regard to your tour…I’m so very excited to see you on the 9th of June and I know that your show in Barrie will rock as will the others!
    Most importantly, BE WELL!

  44. Emily Plunkett Says:

Personally, I generally just stick to Lost and Law & Order: SVU during the week. Once Lost finishes this week, I’ll probably just stick to DVDs for the summer.

As for movies on TV, I avoid them like the plague. I always come in about 45 minutes before the end of the movie, and if I’m in time, my short attention span will kick in I will get bored and turn it off.

  45. Becca Steps Says:

I adore the BBC…not gonna lie. I also like the History Channel, A&E, Discovery, TLC, THE FOOD NETWORK, and can’t leave out the Comedy Network. But I don’t watch it all the time, it’s just nice to sit down and learn a few good things from time to time…I would mind seeing what Animal Planet is all about…
Other than that I rent documentaries. I love them OH so very much. I just recently watched one about the GRIZZLY MAN…he was crazy and awesome… I would recommend.
I make it to this site quite regularly to keep myself entertained and enlightened…but for the most part I write in response to novels and texts that I read, and continue refining my critical thinking skills.

I think for the most part, yes, it does suck very much indeed that TV is now connected with sheer stupidity, however, I do believe that if you have the ability to see past that shit and just learn to “see” what you need to get out of it, it makes getting through all that advertising a whole lot easier. Sometimes I just leave a book in front of the TV and when the commercials come on, I pick it up and get through a few pages. I’ve come to the realization that I can’t do anything about it in the present moment and best thing to do is to just find ways around it.

  46. Mike Florek Says:

I can’t watch tv anymore either unless its hockey or some other sports game. My laptop is my life and I am truly addicted to web sites and youtube. Photoshopping pics and creating art keeps me busy for hours.

  47. girl friday Says:

I love TV. I can’t help it, it’s the world I grew up in.

  48. T-Lee Says:

Recently I fell upon ‘Scott Baio is 45 and pregnant’ I almost barfed my cookies up.

  49. margo_0 Says:

i agree entirely about what you’re saying. iv practically given up on tv myself. i own all of my favorite tv shows on dvd to avoid the annoyance of commercials.

  50. patz Says:

you think TV there is bad…you should see the channels coming out of Mumbai and Bangalore…. you’re never quite sure when the shows start and the commercials end.

  51. chels Says:
the season finale of “House” is on tonight…Now THERE’S something worth watching.
that is true! i watched the gossip girl finale. but im doubting no one else watches that show lol.

  52. Radiobomb Says:

Couldn’t agree more. Canceled cable last month and don’t regret it. Although, I might when the Euro Cup starts next month….

  53. T-Lee Says:

I used to be addicted to the designer shows, but now they all suck, too.. by the time I appear on last 10 pounds boot camp, hopefully no one will ever be watching tv anymore .. Tommy Europe kicks ass though.. he’s one of the best things on the life network right now…

  54. Brian Genack Says:

I’d rather be online myself. Here, the opportunities seem limitless.

TV for me is reserved for two topics: the Discovery/History networks and comedies. The sitcom is dead in the U.S.; I get better programming from Canada. Which I have to find online. The only shows which make me laugh are The Simpsons & Family Guy, at least down here. If I want to watch sports, I just go to the bar.

If I were to have kids, I would do like my parents should have done - reserve it for bad weather days only. No wonder all our kids are fat, dumb, and lazy.

Most talented kids? Ugh. Maybe Welcome Back, Kotter wasn’t so bad.

  55. Shane Says:

There are a few shows I try to watch on TV, but the ones I really like, well they’re on DVD =)

  56. Nick Says:

I like to watch sitcoms. Seinfeld is awesome, King of Queens is great too.

  57. myfavdj Says:

okay well i love tv but i have a pvr which is like tivo but without the monthy fee or whatever it is, anyways i just fastforward thru the ads and i am good to go but i have been noticeing how many time i am pushing that skip button lately and it is frustrating… a good channel i have to watch movies on if you dont have the movie channels is showcase or bravo (well if it is a movie you want to see that is) i find the movies plays for alot longer then you will find on “network” tv

Nay, last night was the first night of the Final Score Trivia tournament in Maryland. I was there instead.

  59. julz Says:

I knew you had to collect something! As a CD collector myself (of yours and others), I fully understand that sort of daily hunt.

My current living situation has me getting somewhat reacquainted with TV, which I haven’t watched in 3 years, and I was just pointing out the same thing about commercials to my friends the other day. Also, I despise how commcercials always use that “Don’t you know, we’re here to save your life” tone of voice, it kills me.

  60. nelly Says:

The commercials are better than the shows themselves. In this day and age of cable and satellite you have 200 plus chanels and not a god damn thing worth watching. I am so tired of reality televsion. I find myself reading a lot these days…..

  61. BaronMarius Says:

What bothers me the most is this: some of our most talented writers and graphic designers work in advertising. Imagine the works of art they could produce if they weren’t busy selling SUV’s, fast food, and beauty cream…

  62. Nothingman Says:

I grew up on television, so I don’t even really think about the commercials anymore. I think that as a child I learned to daydream during them to keep me from losing interest in whatever I was watching. That said, I had a falling out with television many years ago when The Simpsons stopped being very good, after I got tired of grew out of Family Guy (it’s still funny, but not something I watch regularly), and once I started working during my usual TV time. Arrested Development almost pulled me back in, but then the damn thing got canceled. Now I only turn it on for the Daily Show and Colbert Report (religiously), for background entertainment while eating, and when I need something to do around the apartment with the girlfriend over.

My roommate loves it though. Television is to him what music is to me–something to have on all day while doing other things.

  63. Brian Smart Says:

  66. Brian Smart Says:

…and the one thing I would sit down to watch this week (Man.U. vs. Chelsea) is on at 11am tomorrow. Back to Prime Time bullshit. There’s normally two sounds you hear around my office during the day; the ladies frequent conversations about “Dancing With the Stars” and me banging my head off my desk.

  67. m.bird Says:

TV is pretty bad unless it’s on cable. Or unless you just buy the set on DVD.
The Wire, Rescue Me and It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia are great.
I still love Lost, but god the commercials are endless when it airs.

  68. Marcelle Says:

Kenny vs Spenny is the only thing I watch.

  69. Morglor9 Says:

I think Roger Waters said it best with this lyric from the title track of his album Amused to Death:

No tears to cry, no feelings left
This species has amused itself to death

  70. Mikey Says:

I would highly advise purchasing a DVR for those who can’t help but watch television. It will record what you want to watch and you can save numerous amounts of shows before all the space is full. You can fast forward through all the commercials and just delete when you don’t want it anymore. 60 percent of mine is full with only episodes of Jeopardy. The rest are random episodes of South Park, The Wire, Tim and Eric, shows of the History Channel and National Geographic. Oh, and some great movies off of the Sundance Channel and Independent Film Channel. If you’re willing to pay a little bit for a Tivo or DVR you will never have to deal with commercials again. Though I’m sure they will find away to sneak them in somehow. Product placements are on the rise I’ve heard. Best advice: stay away from the major corporate channels. Their product is weak and the commercials are plentiful.

  71. T-Lee Says:

OMG Thank you!!! Can someone please tell me what the big deal is with this show?

  72. Brian Smart Says:

I don’t know what the big f’in deal is with that show but I just want to go to one of those competitions and storm the stage and break into the “drunk-white-guy-at-a-wedding-necktie-around-the-head” dance that I have absolutely perfected. Like my wife said, “It must be terrible if the girls are all 3/4 naked in it and you still hate it”.

  73. Cailen E. Duerks Says:

I really am not sure how so many people can spend so much time watching TV either. I personally hate it, i flip through the channels now and then and it’s pretty much all crap and more often then not it puts me in a bad mood. It’s really blows my mind.

When i do watch TV however it’s the wheather network for maybe 15min. A hockey game or the news, But the news makes me sick after 10mins or so as well. The Cobert report i find hilarious as well, so i watch that whenever i see that it’s on. And then theres the History channel which i used to watch alot but in the last year or two it has slowly degrated into bullshit. programs that have nothing to do with history (CSI etc) and also movies that have nothing to do with history (Fight club? Justice for all?) like what the fuck. awsome movies and nothing against Al Pacino.

There should be some kind board or commite that reviews all the commercials made that year. And the ones that are judged the worst, the people who made them get guillotined in town square live on television. And there would be no commercials while it is aired.

  74. JaphyRider Says:
DVD sets have become my main source of viewing entertainment. My current nightly ritual is the BBC Planet Earth set. I highly recommend it.
I’ll join in highly recommending Planet Earth. It was and still is easily the most rewarding bit of visual media I’ve bought in a long time.

Also, as a general statement, if you like the style of humor in Family Guy but enjoy a cartoon with a plot thick with the roots of its jokes, along with great conversational humor and clever writing, check out Frisky Dingo.

  75. arat Says:

Couldn’t get on this site to publish the other day, and unwittingly disregarded an authored entry by Dale, and suggested a show for you…so, my apologies to Dale and you.

Back to good television…well written, witty and intriguing television only exists with Dexter…you’ll have to play catch up.

  76. Lexi Says:

I completely agree with you. I can watch maybe five minutes of regular television before I get disgusted and switch it off, wondering how on Earth people stand it.
