On a friday eh? Seems like I am going to have to make it and convince Eva to spend the weekend in New York with me :)
June 13th, 2008 at 9:36 pm
I can still comment here so I will. Matt, the recent things that you’ve posted about “fans” have really pissed me off. I can’t believe that people can be like that, but I suppose I was just being naive. The weather in southern Ontario was pretty scary tonight. My friends and I had to leave his patio because the lightning was too close. If we had to cancel something as informal as hanging out with friends in a backyard, I can understand an outdoor concert being canceled.
I’m from Burlington and our Sound of Music festival was mostly canceled tonight due to the weather conditions, and I don’t think anyone would blame the headlining act for it.
June 13th, 2008 at 9:40 pm
Seriously… I’m all the way in Buffalo and we’ve got lightning storms and heavy rain. I had to walk home in it and I thought I was going to get struck…
But a Buffalo show… dream come true, I’ll finally get to see Matt live…. That just made my day and it’s only 12:30 in the morning…
June 13th, 2008 at 9:44 pm
Understood that you’d like to comment Mike, but Matthew’s left the comments off that entry, and removed the others for good reason.
It’s been frustrating for everyone involved, most of all Matthew, the band, and the crew who worked all day to organize and setup the show. I can say, having been there tonight, that Matt was probably the most disappointed person.
Sitting there, having to watch thousands of your fans (all chanting and eager to see you) have to scurry away from the stage moments before you’re about to go on was such a sickening thing to see. It was really shitty for everyone involved, but it happens.
As for derogatory comments, people get far too invested in these types of things, and it’s really a shame to think that a single person who was present for that vicious storm tonight would dare to question the decision made by the management to postpone, then cancel the show- let alone think it be Matthew’s.
If we had to cancel something as informal as hanging out with friends in a backyard, I can understand an outdoor concert being canceled.
This made me laugh for some reason. I think it’s because that kind of situation is so obvious to you and me and most people that I can’t even imagine that some others made Matt have to post something like that tonight. I am disappointed.
On a happier note, hopefully the weather will be good for the Virgin Fest and the Blues Fest I will be attending! But if the weather is bad, the last thing I’d want to happen is my favorite musician being electrocuted on the stage before my eyes…

About that show in NY, anyone interested in a pre-show-meet-up thing?
June 13th, 2008 at 10:16 pm
I’d be down for a pre-show-meet-up thing… but guess who’s not near NY or able to get there :P
And would Eva even be able to attend? I don’t remember when she was getting back from her work excursion :\
In other news…
About the Regina show… Its been somewhat raining a lot in MJ and apparently Regina a lot too. Weather Canada says Tuesday will be sunny skies and happy people.
Lets hope this pans out.
June 13th, 2008 at 10:16 pm
Holy crap… thank goodness you will soon be back west…. it seems the east is not treating you so well. I can’t believe the shit you deal with at times.
Be safe……
June 13th, 2008 at 10:32 pm
Dalin, Eva will be back from Paraguay in about 3 weeks…so yeah, she’ll be around :) And if she’ll want to make the trip down there, I just hope so! She’ll be reading this post tomorrow morning anyways, so we’ll find out soon enough :) I think I will go regardless though. Toronto-Montreal-Calgary-Ottawa-New York sounds like satisfying enough :P
June 13th, 2008 at 10:38 pm
WOOHOO! Thank you thank you thank you, Matt! This might have possibly just made my year.
Also, this announcement came just in the nick of time for me. As of yesterday, I had finally decided to go see the Paris, ON show, and was planning on buying my (non-refundable) plane tickets tomorrow. o_O Talk about good timing on this!
I’d be up for a pre-show meet-up with anyone, too.
In the meantime, I hope things on the rest of the tour start looking up …..
June 13th, 2008 at 10:45 pm
I guess all of this (not the show in Buffalo - all the other bullshit) explains, and reminds me that “fan” is just derived from “fanatic.” Some people seem to be able to conduct themselves respectfully and take a gift that you are given, or be in a position to appreciate a gift that someone else has - and then there are those who don’t know when to stop, when to shut the fuck up, and figure that because they bought tickets to a show or a few cd’s that they have somehow earned squatters rights into someone’s personal life. Pirhannas do this - they converge on something and each of them takes a little bite until their prey is consumed.
And people wonder why Thoreau went and lived by himself beside a fucking pond.
sorry…I know this section is not the place for a rant and I spent the morning on a search and rescue that did not have a happy ending.
June 13th, 2008 at 10:48 pm
Word. I’m excited for another full bander.
June 14th, 2008 at 1:07 am
Thats it I’m officially moving back to buffalo to see this show. If not then a vacation for that whole week, yesssssssssssssss. Christmas in august baby, maybe jesus does love me.
June 14th, 2008 at 1:26 am
i was at the show tonight that was cancelled due to the hellacious downpour that befell us. earlier in the day, i had read posts, comments and takedowns and i sighed at the situation, it was all disappointing. i got into a cab and went to the show because i wanted to hear the music. i stood in the rain and waited but knew it would be cancelled. at one point, i looked at the stage and everything was soaking wet, not good. i thought, they better not come out to play. when they announced the cancellation on the mic, i noticed someone running from the bus to the stage. Matt. i think this action on his part was one of the most impressive things i’ve seen from a performer in ages. particularly given earlier statements of the day. not many performers do that. to be honest, at the end of it, i felt grateful. grateful everyone was safe. grateful to have seen Matt even for a moment.
i came home to a post that saddened me greatly. i should be sleeping but i can’t because i can’t get my head around this. what is with this sense of entitlement lately? something fundamental seems to have changed in people and it scares me. all of this - the music, the blog, the interaction - is a privilege. Matt does not owe anyone anything - why has this been so hard for people to understand? As difficult as this is for me on a very personal level, i respect and agree with Matt’s decisions tonight.
Matt will give credence to whatever he chooses to, rightfully so, but i am sitting here feeling a strange sense of loss. regarding Matt on a micro-level but it’s my faith in people that has been shaken to its core tonight. friday the 13th indeed.
June 14th, 2008 at 2:31 am
Hang in there, in the end the good fans far outweigh the bad. I can speak for most people here and say that it’s tough to read the shit you go through with the crazies and the shitty fans at shows and all that. It’s a testament to your character that you keep posting here and that you care enough…to care.
June 14th, 2008 at 4:06 am
I know this doesn’t belong here but I just have to get rid of something that actually ruined the quiet and peaceful start of the day after a noisy night for me. I am reffering to the “I have officially had it” - Article whose comment section got closed. Can that be?? How selfish and inconsiderate are people! I had similar situations at various occasions when thunder storms were causing cancellation of whole festivals which is to me a totally understandble reaction of the event’s organizers in regard to the safety of everyone.
And then: what is up with these people threatening complete strangers? Whatever parts of their bodies may have been active when writing these words it can’t have been their brains. To see young people be such idiots really breaks my heart. It literally scares me off thinking about such people might claim to have a say in the world in the near future.
I will miss your entries, Matt. And I hope that the love and respect of the people in here regarding you as a human of flesh and blood with feelings, not as some object of desire only there to serve them, will make you come back soon.
June 14th, 2008 at 4:15 am
Yeah more shows!!! I wish I could come.. each time I see you play is better than the last.. I think your voice becomes more rich and deep with age and talent… your poetry more profound and enlightening…. as I have said in the past, to anyone who will listen… you give us all on stage, and for that gift I am abundantly grateful… thank you Matt for all that you do.
June 14th, 2008 at 4:29 am
it’s amazing that you keep adding shows.
people suck, man. my faith in people gets rocked like that all the time… and every time it comes back just a little bit less, pretty soon i’msure i’ll have no faith left.
but, then you go and do something selfless like add shows even when people are being such jerks.
June 14th, 2008 at 4:52 am
Just make sure, everyone who attends the Buffalo show or any other on the remainder of the tour, that you make yourselves into the best damn crowds that MG has ever played in front of.
You know, to restore some faith in the fact that everyone isn’t a complete fucking idiot.
No fights, no paintballs, no angry emails, no threats…and certainly no parties upon sacred beaches.
June 14th, 2008 at 4:52 am

Let’s see if they don’t ship my ass off somewhere else! Apparently there are other similar projects in the works. :p Colombia, anyone? Where’s my flak jacket?
June 14th, 2008 at 5:22 am
Hey,
So the cancelled show last night wasn’t what we were all hoping for.. I didn’t travel 10hrs to see Matt but i did travel 2 hrs. And today that is about $25 in gas (i drive an smaller car thankfully) but as my fiancee and i were sitting in the rain in our lawn chairs (my Fiancee) would have been seeing Matt for the first time last night. She asked do you think he will still play? I said not likely but it was the true Canadian experiance I saw a Matt Good show about 5 years ago down at a speedway when it got nasty out as well and believe me the proper choice was made. I have been following MG for over 14 years and have had the pleasure of meeting Matt on many occasions. Last night i would have loved to introduce my wife to be this great musician but unfortunatley we couldn’t wait by the stage any longer.
Thanks for trying and to all of those who just don’t get it. Best of luck in life!
June 14th, 2008 at 5:54 am
You need to step back from all this negative energy my friend! I’m thinking that you make yourself way too available and people [certainly not your fans] are expecting you to walk and stand on your head all at the same time!
As for the threats? WTF! Insane.
Please, when this tour is done, go be by yourself [or with whomever you choose] and enjoy some quiet time. I will still be listening to your music and [if you so choose to return to the spotlight] I look forward to buying future CDs.
Write, be and breath for You. I know that I could never cope with all that you have been.
Be strong, chin up and
BE WELL!
June 14th, 2008 at 6:30 am
Sweet! just saw your Solo show here in Buffalo back in March can’t wait for the full band. Again your playing at club infinity. The owner or management must be very nice people for you to go back to the same club.
June 14th, 2008 at 8:18 am
What a wonderful weekend my girlfriend and I will have. Looks like we will stay in Buffalo and catch Friday nights band show, then on to Niagra for Matt’s solo.
I can’t wait to get away!!!
Dale, Sorry for all you guys and esp. Matt.
Be safe.
June 14th, 2008 at 8:29 am
Matt and Band,
Thanks for adding a show in buffalo, i realy adore you for this. As far as all the other that are not concerned for you and the bands safety fuck em, they are not real fans. Lastly Ill see you in August and thaks for the great site and thanks to all the admin. for the great site. Whats Dale?
June 14th, 2008 at 8:51 am
Matt,
I was at the cancelled show last night as well. As much as I was dissappointed, I was really glad you came out yourself and explained the situation. All of us were talking to the security and stage people, trying to get as much info as possible, with tons of them saying “he’s gone home! he’s gone!”, but of course, we wanted to tough it out just in case you came out to play some songs. It’s of course completely understandable that you guys couldn’t play; once i understood why, from you, not from some random security person, it was fine. So I guess I’m just saying it’s too bad we couldn’t hear some songs, but it was completely out of all of our control, so there really isn’t anything more to say about it.
June 14th, 2008 at 9:15 am
Normally, I wouldn’t take the time to post this in here as he has closed comments to his update after what took place in Mississauga last night but I feel the need to say a couple of things. I’ve posted this on a fan site in the forum there, so I’m going to abbreviate and clean up the two posts I’ve made so far on the comment into one “neat” response.
***
I made the trek from literally Pickering to Mississauga via public transit last night for the Mississauga Waterfront Festival show. I was fortunate enough to see him last weekend in Oshawa but really enjoyed myself so I figured it’s be great to see him again with fewer “white trash Ontarians” in the crowd.
I even took the night off work to go see the show in Mississauga and figured the rain might hold out ’til around 11pm.
Nosireebob! Just as the stage lights were dimmed at 9:28pm, the skies the skies opened following a light show that preceded it for about 15 minutes.
Managed to make it to the VIP tent for cover; but learned that several guitars were damaged by water from a leak above the stage. At 10:15, organizers pulled the plug. MG came out about 5 minutes later to apologize personally and explained that he couldn’t do it because he’d already once been electrocuted and that he didn’t want to put the band, the crew or the fans in jeopardy.
People around where I was standing in the VIP tent, before I headed over the stage when he came out, didn’t understand the severity of a thunderstorm. With the voltage required for the sound system and lights, the risk is hundreds of times greater of being hit by a strike because lightning (electricity) is attracted to electricity. As MG mentioned in his updated blog, being on a metal stage runs a higher risk of being struck. Not only this, and it isn’t mentioned, there’s a greater chance of it also (or instead) hitting the crowd and possibly injuring or killing fans.
It is b.s. that organizers refused refunds - I asked based on my taking the night off to attend as well as not being able to return because of my work schedule to be told to email the organizers because they were unable to issue a refund or cut off my existing wristband and allow me to give a new one to someone else!
But if it matters, all money from every wristband goes to charity. So, do I want to get a refund in that case? No. I don’t. Got to see The Spades again and got their CD (which they asked to sign for me despite my feelings on autographed CDs) and I also picked up a signed copy of Hospital Music because I support the “little guy” who needs my money.
All in all, a bad way to end the night - but there was no SAFE alternative. Too bad, too, because it would’ve been a killer show.

Tis a shame. He really does care about his fans but the shenanigans that have taken place in Ontario over the past week or so would put a serious damper on anyone’s mood.
Last night, it’d have to be hard to see a pretty full field of people get soaked and then be unable to play for them while you’re around backstage.
Like I said in a post in a response to one of his recent “white trash Ontarian” blogs, it’s sad to see how far-gone humanity is there days; and how a small handful of idiots can ruin it for everyone else.
How is it fun for anybody to receive the flak he’s received over the past week or so? He’s always been about honesty - especially with his fans - and I commend him for this. The fact that he stands outside for 60-90 for pictures and autographs is a rarity in this day and age; but, again, this isn’t for - or about - him, he does it for his fans.
The man makes his cash touring; album sales are down because people just download albums from the internet. I will admit that I had downloaded Hospital Music prior to the show but did buy a copy (an autographed one at that). I like to support the smaller artists and they need the support from the fans. Just because he does sign crap and take pictures with fans doesn’t mean that he has to; it’s not a right - it’s a privilege. Some idiots abused it; and have made Matt feel extremely uncomfortable (perhaps even exposed) and now he has the right to not be so open with his fans.
I mean, look at this idiot that sent the e-mail on Facebook yesterday to him. Gimme a fucking break - that isn’t fair or right. People just don’t get it anymore. It’s not about him not wanting play - it was that he couldn’t because it was unsafe for EVERYONE; especially those in and around the stage. All somebody needed was for the lightning to strike in front of the stage where the crowd was to see somebody killed.
It’s really unfortunate but I applaud Matt in doing the right thing.
Matt (if you read this) - if you want to go into hiding for a while, I think the true fans will understand. Really, it’s about what’s best for YOU and it has _nothing_ to do with us. Those that choose not to understand or refuse to are not fans and are not the type of people you want listening to your music - or coming to your shows for that matter - in the first place.
I just wish people would get their heads out of their asses but, unfortunately, I’m starting to doubt this is possible in the “me generation.”
All the best!

That’s the end of the postings. I’m off my soapbox now.

All I have to say is: The world has gone friggin’ MAD.
June 14th, 2008 at 10:04 am
Looks like Imma making plans to go to Buffalo later this summer…. Woot! Have to rally a road trip!!
As comments are closed, I’d like to echo that humanity sunk to a new low and I am so sorry such assholes have entered the fan fold. Ugh. Threats? Lack of common sense?
Tonight was supposed to be my dad’s first time seeing you after years of fandom, Matt. He’s disabled and most venues aren’t comfortable for him. He called me to say things had been rained out and while he was naturally bummed, he wasn’t angry at all. Instead he’s just looking ahead to another show that suits his needs. He was laughing at how ridiculous the downpour was and the irony of it starting right when the show was to start.
Life happens, people.
As much as I appreciate the interaction, I think Matt that you should do the following, at least for a while:
1) Do as you said and discontinue the contact email.
2) Stop posting here for a while. Take a break from this entirely.
3) When/if you return, don’t allow comments at all maybe. For a while, at least.
4) Refuse to answer any ridiculous messages in any forum and ban/block/delete anyone who gets rude if you aren’t already doing so (like that jerk who FB’d you).
5) Breathe.
All the best to you, and I’ll see you in August on a safe electrocution-free stage.
June 14th, 2008 at 10:23 am
I usually won’t make the trip across the Peace Bridge unless it’s for a very good reason… this is one of those good reasons. I’ll admit I’m looking forward to this show (it’s only 20mins away!) but especially the Niagara-on-the-lake show, there’s something about a warm August night out at a secluded vineyard enjoying an intimate acoustic performance that just sounds perfect.
I’d love to have pre-show meet ups, the last couple of weeks I’ve met some really fantastic people that I just get on with so well.
June 14th, 2008 at 11:05 am
YES!!!!!!!
totally chuffed!
June 14th, 2008 at 11:29 am
Are you going, Eva? I’d like to see NY one more time before leaving the country!
June 14th, 2008 at 11:37 am
I was at the Mississauga Waterfront Festival last night. Having driven from Buffalo to Mississauga to attend the show, I was disappointed the weather ruined the evening. Yeah, the WEATHER ruined the evening, not Matthew Good, for the people who have “their heads so far up their asses” and don’t get it. I took the half day from work, did the hour and a half drive, paid $15 for the shitty festival food and only Matthew Good I heard all day was on my ipod.
The difference is I didn’t go back to the hotel and send Mr. Good an email blaming him for the cancelled show or demand money back when you should have realized that you were paying for admission to the festival not just the concert. The concert was part of the package.
My only complaint of the evening was that the organizers of the festival/main stage should have told people sooner that the show could possible be postponed or cancelled. Being that this was a general admission, all ages show, there were people there with children, older people and people in wheelchairs. I would hope that the organizers of an outdoor festival would have enough thought to check on weather conditions throughout the day if only for the safety of those attending. I had only been in the the Mississauga area for an hour before The Spades hit the stage so I had no idea of the storm that was coming. It just seems to me that some kind of warning or annoucement should have been made by the festival organizers long before the storm was directly overhead. People went from an open field next to a metal stage with the only option of standing in a tent w/metal poles for the storm to pass.
Matthew, the decisions you make regarding the interaction you have with your fans is solely your decision. I feel that you have be more then generous with you time and talent. I am a fan of your music. What you give us beyond that should be appreciated by your fans, not criticized when they are not given special treatment.
June 14th, 2008 at 12:28 pm
Are you going, Eva? I’d like to see NY one more time before leaving the country!
Dunno yet. I have to see what work has in store for me. I’ve never been to Buffalo, so I’m not sure if that will be a road trip or a quick flight. We’ll see. :-)
Meanwhile, I would like to echo everyone’s sentiment about Matt’s decision. Safety first. Since he’s been through this once before, there’s no sense taking another chance like that. It’d be nice for Matt to survive this tour in one piece, ya know?
June 14th, 2008 at 6:43 pm
Thanks!!
June 14th, 2008 at 7:25 pm
While I think it’s easy for the “true fans” to get upset and say “But what about us?!”, we also have to respect your right to not be harassed by some self-important whiners.
I’m a fan who just gets excited that you decide to come to my town (Halifax) at all. I’ve also been super-excited every single time I’ve had a chance to meet you and had you sign my CDs, and I appreciate the time you take to meet us. You’re probably exhausted after a show, and yet you’ve still sat patiently while people line up. And I, for one, don’t mind have to wait half an hour or so until you’re ready.
I also understand why you want to back off the blog and pack it in for a couple of months while you’re on the road. But I’m sad for the fans who won’t get to meet you, because those jerks who feel “entitled” to your time because they bought your CD or a ticket to your show are suffering from some serious delusions. If the basis on which we do buy CDs or attend concerts is that we will be entitled to meet the artist afterward, then how did the music industry get as large as it has? Most people buy music knowing that the artist behind it will remain an enigma.
I’ll miss the blog while you’re on hiatus, but respect your decision. I’m sure touring takes enough energy, don’t waste any engaging with idiots who don’t know their place.
Thanks for the time you’ve put in so far. I’m glad you’ve shared your music.
June 14th, 2008 at 7:29 pm
Thank you Matt,
You made my day……it was going to be a crappy weekend……but you changed that.
Look forward to speaking with you again………..
Love from….you know where!
M.
June 14th, 2008 at 7:40 pm
I thought I’d add one more thing for anyone who thinks MG is in any way “selfish”….
Three years ago, someone broke into my car in a parkade. They took the change out of my ashtray, my headset for my cellphone, my gym bag and, as I later discovered, all my CDs, including my full collection of (signed!) Matt Good CDs. Unbeknownst to me, a good friend of mine wrote to Matt and told him my sob story. At no point (to the best of my knowledge) did anyone doubt the validity of this story, because 2 months later a box arrived in the mail with a letter from an assistant at Universal Music saying that Matt had asked to have some CDs sent to me. They sent me his entire catalogue. And every single one was signed.
So, for anyone who thinks he doesn’t care about his fans when he has to cancel a show, or he decides to go to bed after a show instead of sitting up to meet a couple of dozen fans, you don’t know anything about generosity.
And because I never had a real chance to say it before: Thanks, Matt. That act of kindness secured me as a fan for life (as if the music hadn’t already…). You’re a class act, no matter what the hooligans say.
June 14th, 2008 at 9:44 pm
$28 bucks. What an amazingly great price to see a well established artist.
June 15th, 2008 at 5:21 am
Thank you thank you thank you thank you!
Twice this year, I have made attempts to see Matt perform…..both times, the plans got changed due to our move from North Carolina back to Buffalo…..
I have gotten our tickets this morning-my fiance and I are looking forward to the show! Good times!
June 17th, 2008 at 11:26 am
i also was at the infinity show in march and am stoked to make another trip to my hometown for not only a full band performance, but the acoustic set at jackson triggs (matthew good, summer, winery, WHY didn’t anyone think of this sooner?). christmas IS coming in august this year…
June 17th, 2008 at 7:31 pm
This is the best news I’ve heard in a long, long, long time. And no, I’m not exaggerating.
