New Morning

This morning I awoke to over 350 emails and Facebook messages from people all over the world. All of them, without exception, were positive, kind, and extremely supportive. I simply cannot relay how grateful I am to those of you that took the time to write me, it means a great deal. I would also like to thank the fans at Nearfantastica for their insights and comments of support.

I spent a lot of time laying in my bunk last night thinking about everything and came to the conclusion that giving attention to those who have negatively impacted events over the last few days is something that I should have never done. I am only human, and like anyone else allow my emotions to get the best of me at times. Thus, I want to take this opportunity to apologize to those of you that felt that any of my frustrations constituted a blanket statement. That was not my intention at all, and I am profoundly sorry if, at any time, my words came across in that fashion.

Mississauga

As I wrote last night, I have been electrocuted on stage before because of adverse weather. The electrical storm that hit right before the show last night placed my crew and band in danger given the fact that the stage itself was made of metal and that most everything on the stage is, obviously, powered by electricity. Those two factors combined act as a natural attractor, making being on stage when currents of electricity are present very dangerous.

In the instance that I was electrocuted some years ago in Edmonton, electricity arced from my microphone to just above my upper lip, through my body, and out through my middle finger into my guitar. The entry and exit burns were one of the first things that the doctor who examined me afterwards looked for.

As is always the case in situations such as last night, blame for the cancellation of the show will ultimately be placed on my shoulders and the rumor mill will produce the same sorts of stories that it always does. As far as I am concerned, I am willing to shoulder all of that. The fact remains that while the festival would not offer ticket refunds, proceeds from it go towards its Sponsor A Child program, which has helped children in the community that could otherwise not afford to attend the event the ability to do so. In the end, whether I played or not, smiles were provided some children who will get the opportunity to enjoy the rides and attractions at the festival this weekend – so that’s a positive.

Personal Lives

Like any person of notoriety, my personal life is something that is discussed by complete strangers who often employ speculation as fact. To be honest, being that I am so active online, this phenomenon is nothing new to me whatsoever. Ultimately, speculation is just that – speculation. Lies compounded might represent the truth to some, but that is not something that I am going to waste my time concerning myself with. We live in a day and age in which people with nothing better to do spend a great deal of energy scrutinizing the lives of others simply because they can. The web has provided them a platform to do so instantaneously, so it only stands to reason that they’ll use it to turn apples into oranges. Again, that’s their business, and if it’s something someone wants to waste their time doing then so be it.

Given everything that is happening in this world it saddens me to think that people focus their energies on something so completely mundane as my personal life. More so, that it is of such significance to them as to lead to the employment of threatening behaviour. I am nothing more than a man of faults and frailties like anyone else, one who makes bad and good decisions, one that is driven by the same impulses and succumbs to the same cautions as everyone else. I have not, nor will I ever, claim to be better than the person standing next to me. Like anyone else, I have done things in my life of which I am not proud; things that have hurt others close to me, and ultimately placed a significant amount of stress and strain on myself because of it. But such is life. Each day is a new day, and were we all to punish ourselves for the things that we feel regret about then we would collectively never get out of bed in the morning.

I write and record music and perform shows. That is all. I am an artist and have been my whole life. I am driven to create on a daily basis, and so I do. And with that comes a slew of character flaws that are intrinsic to my being. Without them I would not be who I am, nor would anyone else for that matter, no matter their talents or profession.

After Show Signings

It is unfair of me to punish the whole because of the actions of a few. Therefore I will continue my tradition of signings after shows. I only ask that you come prepared with your cameras ready to go, what you’d like signed at the ready as I always have a Sharpie, and conscious of the fact that there are others waiting behind you. Beyond that, please conduct yourself in a respectful fashion and I will most assuredly reciprocate that respect.

I hope that this finds all of you well. And if not, that well is on the way.

    Hey Matt,
your so right about focusing on the positives. My dad used to always tell me ‘don’t let the bastards bring yah down”.
I caught your show in Halifax a few weeks ago, and as a long time fan I was blown away. There is a gravity in your work- and a real power behind your live performances.
I have grown to appreciate your intelligent and compassionate attention to world affairs and human rights, In this world the fight for good will be met with opposition, your courage is appreciated.
Please don’t be discouraged- there are many in your corner.
    peace man

I’m glad to see that you’re feeling better today and that you’ve distanced yourself from the negativity a bit. I’m also glad you didn’t mind the facebook messages - I struggled with the choice to send one, because you clearly wanted your privacy, but I think that in difficult times its important for people to know that they have support.

Take care, and I’ll look forward to seeing you perform in Vancouver (though I think after your recent posts I’ll skip the signing if I have so much as a vague tickle in my throat.)!

  4. Buffalo Seven Says:

Just a bad day at the office man… it happens to all of us,

  5. kelyn Says:

You couldn’t have said it better Matt!!

I woke this morning so ready to leave Mississauga and very thankful that nobody was injured in last night’s storm. The best part of my day so far was checking the hotel computer before heading home and reading the Buffalo full band show added.

Thank you. I already have my tickets.

  6. Anna Says:

Matt, I was going to write you an email regarding last nights horrible situation before leaving for North Bay today, but your overall calmed attitude never ceases to amaze me.
I can’t wait to see you guys tonight in North Bay rockin out :) Hope your trip there was good!

I am so glad to hear that today is a better day for you. You see it doesn’t matter how many mean people in the world there are because there are so many who appreciate you - the means ones, they don’t deserve anything you give out

  8. DanInRealLife Says:

Awsome man. I’m glad your feeling better about it. It’s really cool having this level of intimacy with an artist I really admire.

Matt, I’ve been on your site for a while now, reading blog after blog and finding myslef heavily enjoying them, and for the very most part argeeing with you. So I decided to become a member and here I am commenting. I was at one of your solo tour shows in Charlottetown last october which was of great pleasure for me to see, and also in halifax a few weeks ago. Id like to appoligize though for being one of the Drunker, loud, unprepared people, that somtimes dont realzie that we all are human and have a life to live. I’m wondering, does it sadden you to see people like myself spend time on your site and commenting, or is that directly pointing at the stupid people with nothing better to do than make negative comments?

  11. winnipeggirl Says:

It had to be Friday the 13th when all of the drama went down, didn’t it of all the days?! Glad you’re feeling a bit better about things. I was shocked, no pun intended, to find out that you had been electocuted once before. I can’t imagine how that would feel. I’m glad that you wouldn’t put yourself in the position to have a repeat experience. Take care and I’ll see you for Monday night’s show here in the ‘Peg!

  12. Shane Says:

I was one of those people that sent Matt a message on facebook, and I’m going to reiterate what I said in that message here:

The things Matt has done for his fans, in terms of accessibility online, after show signings, things of that nature, goes above and beyond what I think can be expected from someone in his position. It is an incredibly great privelege that he extends to his fanbase, and it’s something we should all cherish. Between here, nearfantastica and the facebook group I am a part of, I can say that there are many many many fans that Matt has made supremely happy with everything from autograph signing and picture taking to playing songs for fans at their request. To get such a response from someone I think a lot of us look up to and admire, as a musician and as an individual, to me, is nothing short of extraordinary.

So again, another huge thanks to Matt.

  13. kanji Says:

All the best on the road, see you in a couple weeks in Van!

  14. adrianf74 Says:

    Matt:

I’m glad the new day has given you a fresh outlook on matters. What happened last night did suck - for a lot of us - however, that’s the problem with outdoor venues; if mother nature feels differently, the show WON’T go on and that’s that.

Thanks again for sharing you’re thoughts with us. You’re human as are the rest of us (except for a few “white trash Ontarians,” but hey). With that, we all have our flaws good and bad.

And you’re right, your job is to create and perform and that’s it. I’m glad you’ll continue to sign stuff and take pictures. But again, people need to understand that it’s a privilege and not a right.

Thanks again for coming out last night to address the fans - especially the 30 or so that stood out in the rain waiting while most of us took cover. It was a very classy thing to do and I think everybody respects you for that. Nobody wants to get hurt or killed, and in the heat of the moment, there will always be a moron or two in the crowd expecting you to continue on regardless of everybody’s well-being.

    Thanks again!

  15. sdsarahsd Says:

Looking at last night, wishing that the lightning and rain wouldn’t come…unfortunately it did, and that is entirely out of ones control, and though I really really wished I had been able to catch you last night, the matter of the fact is your (and your crews) safety, and I am glad you didn’t risk your personal health and safety.

my guess is they can’t or won’t fit you in throughout the day today, right? unless you’re already on the road.

I hope these upcoming days are looking better for you, thanks for coming out to Mississauga even though it didn’t work out, hopefully sometime I can catch a show of yours (it’s been near impossible to go to the recent Massey Hall shows as I am a caregiver to my mother and I manged to get her out to the festival last night but going to a venue is always hard for me, but hopefully one day I will have the chance to see you preform.

    take care :)

Yes, we play tonight in North Bay, so we have long since left the area I am afraid.

  20. Becca Steps Says:

    Shit definitely DOES happen.

I would never want you to put yourself in harms way, even if it means I don’t get to see you, because then I would never get to hear your beautiful voice or music again. I think that’s worse.

I appreciate it sooooo much that you will continue signings. Thank you. Thank you. Thank you.

And I hope you have a SUPER AWESOME DELIGHTFULLY FANTASTIC DAY SIR!

    Shocking Electrocutions

    From: http://www.gearwire.com/forum-guitar-electrocution.html

Let all guitar players everywhere beware. Electricity is bad, mkay? It can, like, kill you, mkay? Don’t take that stuff lightly. These musicians didn’t respect the power of Reddy Kilowatt, and as a result wound up deader than fried chicken:

Keith Relf, The Yardbirds, killed in 1976; he was found on the floor of his home studio after getting an electric shock from an improperly grounded electric guitar. Some sources claim he died in his bathtub from the guitar shock, but this seems to be just a stupid internet rumor.

John Rostill, The Shadows, killed in 1973; Rostill was working in his home studio, waiting for another musician to show. The musician finally arrived, finding Rostill dead. Another home studio fatality.

Claude Francois, French pop sensation, killed 1978; This one is not studio related, and you’ve probably never heard of the guy, but he died while trying to change a light bulb while standing in his bathtub. Genius.

Leslie Harvey, Stone the Crows, killed in 1972, by a microphone that was not properly grounded. Another band you probably never heard of.

Notice one common thread running through all these tales of death by electricity? All these people except for one died alone. There was nobody there to help them, if indeed they could have been helped in the first place. Who knows? What we do know is that when you are mucking about with voltage, you need to be careful and you need to have some help if you get into trouble.

Most radio and TV stations have a wooden cane or other non-conductive item that can be used to hook someone and pry them away from a live wire or other source of electrocution. Never touch someone being shocked directly, because you’ll wind up being shocked too. Many people experiencing an electrocution are unable to separate themselves from the source, hence the cane or other means of dragging someone to safety.

Looking over that list of musician deaths again, it looks like the 70s were a bad time to be touching things with electricity running through them. Not much on stuff happening in the 80s until today, but you can bet that there have been some fatalities. The bottom line is, pay attention to what you are doing, respect the power of the wall socket, and you’ll survive to play another gig.

  26. PeterGulka Says:

The rants of the last couple of days reminded me of when I get upset at my kids about something. I know I shouldn’t take the bait but the little squirts get the best of me sometimes. The next day is always better.

The similarities between music fans and 6-year-olds is eerie…

Looking forward to Winnipeg on Monday :)

  27. debn8r Says:

I’m glad you’re feeling better today; I felt so bad for you last night. :( I laid awake for a long time myself last night pondering how some people can be so negative and selfish.
I’m glad to hear also that the proceeds from last night are helping children.

  28. deafening Says:

    Right on, positive thinking!

  29. Susan H. Says:

I’m so happy you’re feeling more positive today. You’ve been in my thoughts lately as those last few posts of yours had me quite worried.

Take care of yourself and enjoy the rest of the tour!

  30. crackedpumpkinhead Says:

AHHHHHHH! Soooo, this is how you do it!

You use your Super ‘human’ abilities!

Very nice Matt, very very nice.

  31. raw is gord Says:

Matt, That is a very respectable post. After the horrible shit thats gone down in the past few days, it would have been easy to just say fuck it. I am happy to see you keeping up with your traditions, im sure many others are too. Seems like every one of us that looks up to you in many different ways, can see in posts like that just why we do. Keep up the great job guys….Take care.

  32. donkeygrey Says:

I’m glad you’re feeling better, Matt. I’ve been worried about you and sending positive thoughts and energy your way. Be gentle with yourself.

    With love and respect,
    Paula

P.S. I’m excited about seeing you on Monday!

  33. David Says:

Thanks Matt. I am glad to see that you are in better spirits.

  34. ken100 Says:

Matt, great to hear the support has found you well…. as a big fan of many years it was unfortunate to hear that it seemed like things were really dragging you down since the barrie area and onwards… just remember when the shitheads start to get to you, there are MANY of us out there who don’t know where they’re coming from or why they do what they do. We have your back, and we will stick with you because we respect what you do and how you do it.
Keep it up and don’t change. And fuck the rest if they can’t take a joke.

    Ken

  35. Nhu Says:

This is why so many people look up to you and respect you.

  36. Caesar Says:

Glad to read that you were able to get past this so quickly. Take care of yourself. All the best.

I second that. This post and the humanity of it is inspirational on so many levels–most of all because it is fantastic to see you happy again! It really hurt to hear about all the shit you’ve been putting up with lately when you give so much of yourself to the fans. I’m thrilled you’ve found yourself back in a good place emotionally and that you’ve found a way to put the ridiculousness behind you, although I wouldn’t blame you one bit if you hadn’t been able to. You are too good for us, Matthew. :)

Anyway, I sincerely hope the rest of the tour treats you better! Be well, be happy, and I’ll be looking forward to seeing you in Buffalo (and thank you again for adding that stop!).

  42. AnnaStasia Says:

I am too computer illiterate to figure out how to quote the post so in regards to the after show signings part:

    Thank you.

  43. Monkey Says:
Last night’s storm was a show all unto itself!
No kidding! It was kind of awesome in a Pink Floydesque way…minutes before the show was supposed to start, the fog/smoke on stage started to blow around, and there was a black curtain of some kind whipping around…insane lightning flashes…it was all very dramatic - almost worth my $15 just for that part, and I’m glad to leave it to charity. For the record, anyone who would have stood around to watch a show in that storm is a fucking nut. There’s no way any artist should have been expected to take the stage in that kind of weather - in fact, I would have been quite disturbed if someone had made the call to ask it of any of the guys last night.

I appreciate your honesty here Matt, and I’m glad you found your way back…for you as much as for us.

Um, I also think it’s really cool that you have exit wound scars from being hit by lightning. Yep.

  44. tiananmen Says:

It’s really the least that we could do, considering all you do for us.

  45. taraden Says:

Glad to hear that things are looking a bit brighter today. The after show signings are back on… I hear… hopefully you have decided to do that for your own personal reasons and not to please others. I had the pleasure of meeting you the last time you played Vancouver and it seriously made my year. I will now contemplate hanging out after the show to meet you again… although I certainly not be annoying in anyway… not my style. :D

Anyway, Matt… I am glad to see that you are in a bit better of a mood than the last time you wrote….. (and believe me it was all justifiable) and I will be waiting very impatiently to see you again in Vancouver.

Take care and all the best…..

  46. sjay Says:

Your humble attitude towards yourself and your career is what attracts people to you. It may be puzzling to you as to why people want to know about your life, but it makes perfect sense to me.

You are human, you present yourself as a fellow human, and this allows people to accept themselves.

    All the best, Matt.

  47. KET Says:

    1) Yay, in general.

    2) Life’s a balance… you try to focus on the positive and good so it outweighs the negative, but sometimes all the idiots and storm clouds (literally?) come at once. Not much you can do but take a step back and recollect. (Thank you, thank you, yes, I’m rather deep.)

    3) Normally, when I get into a Bad Place like that, it takes me at least a week to resemble a human being again. You’ve got a quick bounce-back mechanism, of which I am both glad and jealous.

    4) I can’t believe you’ve been electrocuted on stage. Dude!

  48. Emily Plunkett Says:

Matt, if anybody hasn’t tol you already today, you fucking rock. :)

  49. KET Says:

And I still promise I’ll give you a great hug in Calgary.

  51. Diane Says:

SJay has said it better than I could, so I’m just going to agree with his/her post. I’m glad you’re in a better place today.

  52. sauceymonkeyboy Says:

Wow… so glad to hear this today. I’m happy things are looking up…. i had a really grim and scarey feeling there for a second thinking that he’s had it and anymore matt good music as we know it would be done for! I breathe a big sigh of relief! Everyones emotions gets the best of them at one point or another and yours was just magnified by your stardom but it was great to read this blog entry today and know that everything is a bit better today.

  53. billykyjoe Says:

I’m glad you haven’t let the negative individuals affect you too much. I’m also glad that you’ve had time to think and come back to Earth. It’s unfortunate and sad that some people are as negative as they are.
As for the show last night, you should definitely put your safety ahead of everything else. It sounds like the people hosting the show just wanted to get their money and didn’t care about anything else.
I’m happy that so many people wrote you to express themselves and that they were mostly positive.
We can’t wait to see you in Saskatoon and Lloydminster.

  54. Giant Says:

In all honesty, I don’t think I could put up with half of the bullshit that you have to Matt. Kudos to you for focusing on the positives, and not letting a select few assholes ruin it for everyone else.

Hopefully we won’t have a replay of the electrocution in Edmonton next week. It should be an amazing show though, as you will be playing a packed house that sold out within minutes of the tickets going on sale.

  55. Hyphnip Says:

hey Matt, I’m glad you’ve reconsidered. I’ve been to see you 9 times (monday will be the tenth) and I’ve never met you before. I really appreciate every show of yours I’ve been to. if you remember playing the Grand Rock Music Festival in Manitoba a few years back, I sat in the sun all day without food or water to see you and ended up collapsing after your set. turns out I was completely exhausted. I’ve seen you at clubs, and theatres and outdoor settings and you are always a thrill to watch. you do things for the fans that no other musician I’ve seen is willing to do. you are a performer without equal.
I can’t wait to meet you.

  56. leyake Says:

I’ve read your entries these past few days and was concerned that you had lost hope.
Kudos for staying stong and being so open about your feelings.
    I’m glad you’re back!!

  57. insideout Says:

    a new morning/day indeed. yay!

    thanks Matt

  58. Mike Pew Says:

    Hurray!!!

I am once again reminded of how awesome your true fans are, which is rather fitting because we have it pretty damn well with all the stuff you do for us.

One day you’ll realize you’re too good to us, but until that day comes we’ll enjoy it lol. All kidding aside, it’s good to hear you’ve been cheered up.

  59. Kristen Says:

I was so happy to see this entry today, Matt. Your ability to see the positive in all this is respectable. I’m so sorry this all happened to you - I could never say those types of things about you. I may not know you personally, but I know what you’ve done to help me over the past several years and I know your music. (I hope you got my email regarding this btw;)) Your true fans, including myself, are always here for you. Quite honestly, I don’t know that I could deal with all the BS you do sometimes…

  60. Morglor9 Says:

Ah, I’m glad to hear you’re in a better place Matt.

Wait, that implies you’ve died and passed through the pearly gates.

You’re in an improved emotional state. I’m glad to hear it. I’m still debating bringing Hospital Music to the Odeon on Wednesday.

  61. psworn Says:

Thanks for reconsidering your stance on interacting with fans. Though you might not have asked for it, you still have been placed on a pedestal by many. Blessing or Curse, ultimately it is up to you to decide.

Being selfish, I do feel better knowing that someday I might get to meet the person that has made a large impact on my life through his work and personal interaction. When that day might happen, who knows. I hope your stance remains when that day comes.

    Take care, Matt.

  62. jgriffith Says:

Why would anyone blame you for cancelling the show? Do they not understand what happens when one combines lightning, metal, and electricity? Anyway, after standing underneath a food tent for an hour, I was glad to see you come out and talk to the handful of us who stuck around just in case the weather cleared enough for a show. It was appreciated.

  63. Amber Waves Says:

Incredibly well said, Matt, on so many levels. One more example of how you have inspired and continue to inspire me on a daily basis.

Our society is celebrity-obsessed; the plethora of tabloids and gossip rags is proof of that. Even those of us who rail against the paparazzi find ourselves drawn to read of the latest Britney debacle or who’s divorcing who, if only to be able to speak against the item’s inclusion in the news. Unfortunately, as human and real as you are compared to most celebrities (who maintain a gap between themselves and the public), you’re falling prey to the same sort of circus antics, and it can be a very lose-lose sort of deal. But the interaction you’ve engaged in has also built you a different, more human relationship circle here, and I think I speak for many when I say we feel privileged to get to converse and debate with someone who not only inspires us on the musical/artistic level, but as a human being.

Your desire to educate and hope for a better world is one of the reasons why you engage me as an artist. There was a show a few years ago, where you mentioned Amnesty International between songs, to X applause, and shortly after said, “Go Leafs” to thunderous applause and hooting… after which, you said, “You see? That’s the fucking problem right there.” It’s stuck with me and it’s a story I relate frequently to friends and family, which usually gives them pause in the way I hope others paused. That memory just came back to me, reading this entry. If nothing else, know that your efforts are not in vain; after years of reading your blog, following news links, I feel far more prepared and knowledgeable about the world in which we live, and I have your music as a comfort when the gravity of our situation hits. Very few artists give that much, and when you’re in your bunk thinking of human errors, hopefully that effect you’ve had on many helps (as I suspect it did last night in the outpouring).

You at once say you’re human and also say you ’should’ not have let this get to you. There is no should; we know this. How many times do I get that line when picking up my latest prescriptions for medications for my time bomb of a brain? You’re human, and it’s incredibly hard to deal gracefully with a barrage like the recent one you experienced. It’s okay; anyone with half a clue is just as outraged and angry along with you at the disrespect and also empathetic.

    All the best, Matt.

I think this post perfectly sums up the reasons we all visit this site on a dialy basis. I’d like to add something profound or meaningful to the comments but I think everything’s been said so well already.

All the best to you and yours and keep doing what you’re doing. It means the world to us.

  65. dwf Says:

I’m glad you’re feeling better. I saw the accumulated spoils of the last few days in my feed reader and cringed.

I think it’s correct to say that there is a relatively quiet but vast majority of sane, reasonable fans who don’t expect you to risk electrocuting yourself or your employees, and who have better things to do with their time than concoct zany theories about your personal life. Unfortunately, it’s usually the idiots who stand out, because that’s what they aim to do.

Keep well, and thanks for the music. The Massey Hall show was spectacular.

    YAY!!!! I am so happy!!

First of all, I am stoked that you will continue to do signings after your shows..YAY!!! My sister is travelling to BC from Ontario and I am taking her to 2 shows and she has always wanted to meet you…

Secondly, having the proceeds of last night go to Sponsoring A Child. You rock!! You’re a class act, hands down. It’s truly amazing that you can stay positive through all the bullshit that you endure day in and day out.

Third, OMG you got electrocuted?? That’s fricken crazy dude. I must say I am quite disappointed that you were unable to stop the storm last night and perform. I mean come on; you have total control of thunder and lightening. Geez….

Forth, well I don’t have one. But I must say again, YAY!!!!! I have a pretty amazing couple weeks coming up. Seeing my sister for the first time in 15 years, and 2 MG SHOWS….Life really couldn’t get any better… :)

  69. whenwemelt Says:

Having considered myself a huge fan for so long now and for the first time getting to see you Monday (FINALLY!!!), I was crushed this morning to read about all of the negative happenings this week had brought you. I was hoping that everyone else who truly knows what you are about (and loves you for it), would band together and send you an outpouring of admiration, understanding and affection that could lift your spirits… they didn’t let me down.;-) I guess none of us could see you down and not try what we could to show you how much what you do and say means to those that really matter. I will definitely be seeing you again soon!

    Sending you positive energy,
    Kat

  70. keepXtheXfaith Says:

Mr. Matt Good, if I respected you before (which I did, very, very much so) I respect you ten fold right now. The fact that you even care about your fans to the extent of showing us your inner thoughts and keeping us in the loop through this blog has always amazed me, but that you would choose to continue the after show signings after so many have abused the privilege is beyond me. Having never met you however, I am extremely grateful for your strength and endurance in that matter. I don’t know what the sitution was that you are apologizing for, so I cannot comment on that, but the fact that would you be so level-headed and grounded to apologize to us fans in the first place (whom some artists think are ‘beneath them’) simply astounds me, but does not surprise as, well, this is ~you~ we’re talking about. All I can say is thank you, so much.

And thus poses a question: Even though I have been a fan since I was 12, I am only 19 years old as of now and as such have never been to one of your shows, try as I might. So when I heard that you would be in Edmonton in June I was ecstatic, and immediatly tried to get tickets (this was in March). Unfortunatley. they were already sold out, and so I had planned on doing the next best thing; coming to the aftershow signing. My question is, is there any need to have been at/had tickets for the concert to be able to meet you, and where exactly do the signings take place?

Love and all the best!! (and sorry if this was too fangirly…it’s just that good people such as yourself are hard to come by these days and so I really appreciate having one be my favourite artist =D)

As much as it’s mostly for selfish reasons, I’m glad that you haven’t thrown in the towel because of a few bad apples. You know, there are always going to be those who ruin it for the rest of us…as a lottery sales person, the people who were stealing winnings from unsuspecting customers have us all cast in a negative light now. Although my customers are mostly regulars who trust me, new people put me through the ringer and it takes a lot of reassuring to let them know that I’m an honest person.

It’s frustrating when you see adults exhibiting unscrupulous behavior…they should know better. But, unfortunately, that’s not always the case.

Glad you’ve reassessed things and see them in a new light.

    :)

I am thrilled to hear about your change of heart.

There will always be people in the world who will do things good people disagree with, or even abhor. Whatever these people have done (or will do), remember it is the sadness and pain in their lives that motivate their behaviour. I actually feel sorry for the people who have wronged you in the last little while. They are really THAT sad that they have to disrespect others in order to feel better about themselves. In the same vein, it takes a lot of strength to see past the negativity that they cause. Thank you for being an inspiration to me and to the many more who I’m sure share my sentiments.

    Cheers,
    Marianne.

you’re too good to us, mr. good:) and with your decision to continue with the after show signings, my new excuse for not trying to meet my favorite artist after a show can’t be “he doesn’t do signings anymore”. i’ll have to go back to “cuz i’m a chicken”.

You are indeed too good to your fans. I’m glad to see that you’re feeling better, however. :) I hope you have a fantastic rest-of-tour experience, and you sleep better knowing that all the negative comments your received are from idiots, and that they’re probably outnumbered 10-1 by those who actually care. Hug!

I’ve been away from the internet for a week so I have no idea what’s going on, and I don’t see a post illuminating me on what happened on the 13th, so I’ll just send a general statement your way that from all I’ve seen, you’re fantastically good at being a professional and accessible performer, and it’s clear that you’d do whatever you could to keep a show going when it’s not too much to ask - so don’t let any naysayers get you down because a show got canceled. Sending good wishes your way. :)

Signings take place usually at the tour bus from what I’ve gathered (alas I couldn’t stay at Massey Hall or any previous show because of various reasons :( Oh well!). I really don’t think anyone would fault you for lining up.

That said, go to the show anyway. Lemme tell you a few trade secrets (from years of hundreds of concerts and knowing brokers): people often have an extra ticket they’ll ditch for face value (go down there knowing what that is!). Show up a bit early and ask. If al else fails, hit up the scalpers (and this part is key) 30 minutes after doors open or when they start to dwindle (you might miss some of the Spades, alas, but some is better than none right?). If they’re still holding, they will sell for face or less even. Just ask very nicely to speak to their chief (there’s usually one and any other guy will usually say he has to talk to the chief). Tell them it’s all the money you have in the world. Have small bills and offer up face or even a little less. I got a kid into an Evanescence show for $10 before. I got my friend a freaking Spice Girls ticket for half price. Karma usually works out though so do try and get to see the show too, okay? I know the scalpers were left holding some choice seats for Toronto that never sold so there’s bound to be a ticket for you in Edmonton. Good luck!

Hmm… as with most things, the bad apples try to ruin good things for the rest of us mostly normal people. 91. dsboz Says:

    Hey Matt,
After leaving the show in Mississauga I thought I would pop on to see if there were any updates. To my surprise I saw your initial post and knew we had reached the tipping point. My wife and I were in shock that people actualy questioned the decision to not perform – it was crazy outside. Luckily, we were able to find safe shelter under the biggest tree we could find (phew!) lol

    On a more serious note…

As a new fans of yours we are trully greatful for your candure and insight on music, life and political events in the world. You have certainly englightened us on a host of issues that should be front and center. I can’t think of a single artist who offers as much fan interaction as you do and for that we are trully greatful.

My wife and I simply can’t wait to see you in August at your Jackson Triggs show!

    Take care!

2 weeks, old man, till you’re the age I turned today.. June 1971 rules, baby.. ya!!!!! I’ve been reflecting on a couple of your last posts and I think when you get to be the age we are (almost 40!!!), the drunkers will actually start to get to you.. I’m sure you’re just getting too old for the bad apples now… as you get older you lose patience for the people who waste your time. And I appreciate your update and that you’re feeling better, and will be there to sign sigy’s on the 26th!!!!!! I already wear my HM bag with pride… but to have your actualy john hancock on there will just take the cake….

right, speaking of which… Dutch Bakery awaits me!!!!!!!!! Yes Islanders…. THAT Dutch Bakery!!!!!!!!!

  94. Candace Says:

    Hey Matt!
I was slated to see your Mississauga concert as well, and I entirely respect your decision not to play - I had to walk home in that rain and lightning! I also couldn’t help but be a bit upset when I read your initial post; I figure that some people are just unappreciative jerks. Good luck with the rest of your shows and thank you for coming; what really matters is that you intended to perform. :)

  95. Tract Says:

Matt, I think all of us fans who truly respect and understand you as a person, musician, artist and activist, have been enlightened and changed in so many ways by your work.

It is sad that the modern world is obsessed with “tits and ass” and celebrity gossip; I’ve met far too many individuals that can tell me how “hot” some person on the entertainment channel is, but couldn’t tell you what or where Darfur is, what’s going on in politics, recent disasters, or any other event for that matter.

It is people like that, that ruin the world and contribute to all the problems they complain about. It is people like that, that will get drunk at YOUR shows, that will abuse your rights to privacy and open attitude. It is people like that, that will never understand, appreciate or respect true human decency…that would rather be “entertained” than consider your safety and personal welfare, or the safety and personal welfare of others. They don’t see or understand that there’s so much more to the world than the simplistic sexed up vision they see on popular media, they can only think “ME, ME, ME”, and nothing else.

I think we all respect the pressure you’re under; your personal and very private problems and the inability for certain others to do any better than harass you or speculate on your life. I respect you deeply and profoundly as a person, musician and activist. I believe you have created a lasting mark on many lives and have been one of those few who have seen the greater picture, and the nature of the world, versus the illusion produced by media conglomerates.

Screw the “flamers”, the whiners and those who seek to do nothing but abuse you…you have an overwhelming base of supporters who truly respect you for what you do. You have immense pressure, serious conflicts, difficulties and feelings of your own to deal with. YOU are #1 in your life, no one else, you have to look out for yourself.

    Oops…I rambled.

Well, you know what I mean. WE FANS LOVE YOU! It’s amazing the lengths you have gone to interact with the public, you’re a people’s person, a legend, and the world will be a very sad place if you ever decide to stop. Glad to see that you’re feeling better…and that you had some Matt-time to hopefully relax and unwind a little.

  96. misshk_wpg Says:

I am glad you did what you had to do Matt and I am grateful that you will be making it to Winnipeg’s show. To think so called fans would act like that… pfft. The kind of people who act like that obviously have no respect for what you do and should not call themselves fans. For Christ sakes your money is going to a charity not all is lost, lol. Some people need to mind their own business and get a goddamn life. I know this because I have to deal with the public each day and the more I work in retail the more I lose my faith in Humanity itself. Listening and enjoying music is my escape and my joy, why would I want an artist to jeopardize his safety because “I want what I paid for” As for the other comments about Fans threatening other Fans, I think that goes to show how petty some people’s lives can be. So be it, you are Matthew Good, I am going to see you play at the Burt and I am going to drink some beer and have an awesome time!! And I hope you enjoy your time here in Winnipeg!

    Carla

  97. Snowfalls Says:

Matt, I am glad to read that the actions of others has not stopped you from looking after your own safety and the safety of others that are with you. You are only human and of course emotions are going to come into it, It only human nature.

If we allow the bad to out way the good in life, then we are no better than they are. I for one would like to think that there is alot of good people out there that see beyond those that are just plain bad apples to put in a more kinder way.

  98. WAVEBABY902 Says:

I was at the Friday night show in Mississauga, My boyfriend and I were excited to see you again. We were at the Hamilton show the Friday before.
Suffering from social anxiety, I was very proud of the facT that I inched us almost to the the fence in front of the stage………..and then Mother Nature let loose :( and some MORON screamed ‘princess’ …considering the guy who screamed this then ran when the sky opened up and poured on everyone…who’s the princess now?
As for the $13 wristband (yeah that right we got ours early) that was good for the whole weekend..It’s $13 or $15 dollars, you would spend that on cotton candy or some other carnival food. I thouroughly enjoyed the Spades, walked around the park and enjoyed the whole atmosphere.
Am I diappointed that I didn’t get to see yuo play? HELL YEAH! But it’s summer, it was an outdoor festival, I watched the news before and knew the weather could turn bad, came prepared…these things happen.
Thanks for showing up in Mississauga I hope you got to enjoy those addictive little donuts, and don’t let certain MORONS ruin it for the people who truly appreciate you and your work.

  99. lisa00 Says:

  101. Bev Says:

I don’t know what was written in your earlier post regarding the past week’s shows but my “significant other” and I happened to be at the Mississauga show when “the skies literally opened up”. We braved the torrential downpour and impressive/scary lightning show in hopes to see you. In retrospect we feel like idiots standing out in the rain (we did hide under a tent for the most part) thinking that you might possibly come on at some point…I think we thought we were “reliving” our youthful days by braving the storm to see a concert like/with a bunch of teenagers..duh…(I turn 40 next week) and figured since no one had come out and said that the show was cancelled that maybe somehow it would/could still go on.

Like I said, in retrospect we should have figured out that after such a torrential rain there was no way you could play in those conditions. However, we figured since we were already there, already soaked and ready to party, might as well wait it out and see what happens. Keep in mind that this was not just in “stupidity/naivety” but in great eagerness of seeing you play as well. It’s not so easy getting a babysitter and “date nights” with your partner once you’ve become a parent…regardless…we were very disappointed with THE SITUATION when we heard there would be no show….NOT WITH YOU/YOUR BAND. We appreciated you coming out yourself and talking to us….we had no idea that part of the stage collapsed or of the potential hazard of the stage itself (duh….makes me look back and think…why the hell were WE standing out in that?? or nevermind standing in those tents with the metal posts!!…). Of course we would never expect you would risk your safety just to play some music for a few wet, crazy fans. We were still hoping tho…. ; )

Luckily we only live (literally) on the other side of the bridge so it was a short walk home. Just disappointed we didn’t get to see you…don’t know when we’ll have another date night or when/if you’ll be back. Sadly I didn’t even recognize you when you came out…I guess they used an old photo of you for the event and I’m not used to seeing you without your glasses. That, and I’m old, unhip and out of the “loop” now……damn.

Anyhow…just letting you know where “some” of your fans were coming from on that one….cheers and hope you stay “lightning free” from now on…
