Thunder Bay, Day Off

Space June 15, 2008, Matthew Good

Jungle Of Our Time

As has come to be the case, the WiFi in the hotel is shit. So I am sitting on the bus, which has a better connection.

When you tour this country as much as I have certain things become tradition, such as where you stop and spend days off. While I usually play Thunder Bay, on this tour I’m not, so I’m spending the day playing catch up. Emails to return, reading to do, etc. Some time in the early hours of the morning we’ll slip out of town for Winnipeg. I think everyone else has gone to the Finnish Sauna. I decided against it. Steam I’ll do, dry heat doesn’t interest me as much.

Happy Father’s Day

To all those of you out there to which it applies - happy father’s day. I would especially like to send my love to my own father and my younger brother Chris, who has two beautiful children.

It’s a sad day when the internet connection on your bus is better than the hotel! So much for being a connected country, eh?

Hopefully North Bay went off without any problems compared with the rest of this past week. Hopefully you’ll be back in Ontario in August besides the Winery show and I’ll make it out. Debating the trip to Buffalo.

I dislike sauna’s they make me too dizzy and nauseous, if you wanna sweat you should go for a job not sit on your butt and do nothing.

Happy father’s day!! My dad is cooking my family dinner because he says he always has time to be Dad even on his day. Or, maybe because he doesn’t trust anyone with the BBQ.

Still trying to grasp entirely the intentions of your words in the photograph… but all so true they are.

    “Wild to caged…”
Whether this was your intended meaning or not I can’t help but think of the way life used to be. Primitive cultures around the world; ‘wild’ cultures. These were the most sustainable of our times. Now we are slaves to a world we have ourseleves created; a world against Earth.

I may be far off track to what you intended to imply, but to me those words say so much.

I also wanted to wish all those men out there who have spent their lives for their children a very Happy Father’s Day, and lets not forget to remember those fathers who are no longer with us; today is a time to remember everything they did for us. Happy Father’s Day!

It is good to see you back on your feet after this past week of Hell. That’s one of the beauties of being…uh…blessed?…with bipolar. Yes, it’s a bitch when you’re down and out, but it won’t last. You’ll feel better soon enough. :)

When I was a kid my dad promised to take me hunting for amethyst in Thunder Bay…but we missed the turnoff.

Last week a French person I know used the words “condemned to success” - I thought that maybe it was a fairly regular expression turned strangely potent by translation…but here you have written its match, “convicted of intent”. Hmmm…keeper of dreams is such a great responsibility…I hope the sun keeps shining for you as you make your way back home.

It’s a gorgeous day here in Vancouver…about to head out and sit with my Dad in his garden. I appreciate him so much and he has been an awesome father…so a big shout out to all the Dads today. And the moms who have to be both.

On the flipside, my ex is a no show today (again)…his “day” with the kids is Sunday - he’s missed the last 5/6. My kids are totally cool and don’t hold any grudges - he’s lucky that I don’t bad mouth him (much). He gives me plenty of reason to. But I feel awful for them that they can’t give him the stuff that they so lovingly picked out for him. Especially the cards. His loss.

    I hate saunas.

I’m sure dry head would be equally unpleasant to dry heat, but then again I’m female, and thus have no basis for comparison. :P

Go figure the Wi-fi is shit here. That’s about par for the course.
Kangas Sauna is a great spot though Matt, you really should have given it a shot. There are not too many better ways to unwind and relax than to have a proper Finnish sauna and after the week you seem to have had, it sounds like you could use some relaxation.

Enjoy your day off, June is a pretty crazy month for you

The North Bay show was absolutely amazing last night! You looked good up there. It was nice to see you play with the band again. Don’t get me wrong, I loved the acoustic shows too.

Thanks for the autograph and picture! Keep up the good work.

By the looks of the photo, there’s a nice little Irish pub in the back of the hotel you’re staying at. Great pints there and I’m almost positive they’ll have some of Euro 2008 on the big screen if you get bored while overnighting here.
(The Euro’s just aren’t the same without England though)

Enjoy the day off, Matt! You certainly deserve one after all the craziness you’ve been put through this last week. And it’s always satisfying to work through one’s to-do list and cross things off (or is that just me? ;p).

Happy Father’s Day to all the dads out there, too! That reminds me I should be making my phone call home right about now ….

Before I go, though–love the effect you used on that photograph, Matt. The camera flash looks like mother-of-pearl. Awesome. :)

I hope you enjoyed your day off and had some time to talk with your Dad.

I wanted to follow up with your Juno post wherein you commended your Dad for teaching you the value of Our history. That post caused me to visit my local library in search of some recommended books. This afternoon my better half spent the afternoon with our girls and I chilled [I know, Fathers' Day!] with a few of The Canadian Beaver Magazines. What a great magazine and even better, are all the articles on our history!! The back inside cover had a group of ladies from 1800 in bathing suits at Kitsilano [sp?] and so I sat with my 41/2 year old and explained to her that that’s what ladies used to wear….

    Very cool! Thanks for sharing!

See what you have created? :-)

    Matt,

When you’re using WiFi outside the bus, are you using your AirPort? When you are on the bus, are you using your AirPort to connect to WiFi or is the bus using a transceiver to connect to WiFi? Does the bus connect to an AP (access point) from a hotel or does it use a satellite connection?

Maybe the signal is just too weak in the hotel because of the location of the APs. Most signals don’t travel through concrete all that well. The frequencies used by modern WiFi are not the kind that can easily penetrate through buildings.

I believe they have a signal booster that you can bring with you, it should be typical Apple style, small and white, for those low-powered APs you try to connect to.

    Hope that helps.

Oh! You’re actually having Father’s Day celebrated in June over there in Canada? Didn’t know of that… We are celebrating it on ascention day actually which usually is in may. Probably to escape the possibility of people demanding it to be another day off if actually it would be made a seperate holiday ;o)

So my best wishes for all the daddies over there!

    Sending out an SOS ………..

My girlfriend and I will be attending the Buffalo show as well as the Niagra show. We are driving in from Pa. and plan to stay in Buffalo friday night for the show, or possibly all 3 nights, depending on how far we have to travel back and forth. Can someone reccomend a hotel to stay at that will allow me easy access off the highway to go to both places. I am not familiar with the area. We are planning to do some sightseeing in Buffalo as well as Niagra.

    Thank you in advance.

    Laura

For Father’s Day I got one of those rotary-blade lawnmowers - no gas, no engine - just blades set up like a Gatlin gun. Hooray for me - it’s like pushing a fucking elephant up a hill that does not want to be pushed.

Polar Bear: A couple of years ago I was making my way up from Pa. (my Mom lives there) and got stuck due to weather in Buffalo - I stayed at the Hampton Inn Downtown and don’t have any complaints. As I recall it was pretty reasonable compared to some of the others downtown and right next to the theatre district. It is on Delaware and the club Matt is playing is on Main - so if my memory serves me correctly (and often it does not), that’s only a couple of blocks apart.

(WARNING: you are about to accept directions to a hotel in Buffalo from a guy in Whitehorse - bear that in mind when planning your trip).

I think it is just east of the Peace Bridge and also just east of I90 or I190. Google it.

While many take for granted the extraordinary bound they have with their father, I am forgetting what it is to even have one in my life. Can that be replaced by something else?

I haven’t seen my dad in a little more than 10 years now. But all the other great men that have been important to me were told about my love for them on that special day. I am sure Matt you are one of them for many. I also had a thought for all of my friend’s dads that have been there for me and for all the men that inspired me at some point. I surely sent some love your way Matt, and here’s a duplicate of it right here <3

Melissa, sadly, I relate. Sometimes things happen for reasons we often don’t understand at the time but eventually we learn why later…
Just wanted to let you know you’re not the only one. I used to feel awkward b/c I don’t even know where my “father” lives…
I have since learned it’s okay and truthfully, it’s my choice now.
    Wishing you well.

Thanks Jenn, that’s really sweet of you :)

It was not my choice at first but now that I am an adult and that I had time to think about it in a different perspective, it became my choice, one I am comfortable with :) There are so many fantastic people in this world, and many of the ones I met are some of them and I am grateful for that :) Things do happen for a reason, and the reasons I have to be happy about are of much greater importance than the reasons why I shouldn’t be. I love people. Yay for people!
