Cell Phones On Stage: The Hidden Tapes
Milos pointed this out to me today. It’s us doing Apparitions, the audio quality of which isn’t that good because it’s obviously distorting whatever was being used to record it, but the preamble is fantastic…
And I have to call Stu on the bad passing note at the end. Hey, what sort of friend would I be if I didn’t? Dirka dirka.

“They’re turning left on Dirka Dirka street”
Team America: World Police was so funny!
Though I have to admit, this standup was really funny too!
You could do standup you know! With music!
July 23rd, 2008 at 3:42 pm
It’s funny that he would have his cell phone with him on stage. It’s even funnier that it went off as he was on stage. I think that’s a first seeing that happen, for me anyways! Love the comedy! Great song!
July 23rd, 2008 at 3:49 pm
I kept a phone in my pocket for five years. I hope my kid turns out like Wolverine.
July 23rd, 2008 at 4:11 pm
So funny! This reminds me why I bought tickets for Buffalo, it’ll be so great :) (again) Yay!
July 23rd, 2008 at 4:20 pm
ahah that was great. i always love the between song banter that goes on at your shows, its so awesome. i love how his phone actually went off lol, that is ridiculous. hope he learned his lesson ;P
July 23rd, 2008 at 4:35 pm
That’s not a bad passing note, that’s jazz…
July 23rd, 2008 at 5:02 pm
Awesome, tee hee.
Not the best of places to try and hide a text message conversation.
July 23rd, 2008 at 5:06 pm
Hey Matt. I totally have a video of when Pete had his cell on stage in North Bay and you guys busted him :D
July 23rd, 2008 at 5:06 pm
Note; preamble is about Stu’s hot cousin LOL
July 23rd, 2008 at 5:15 pm
This is the definition of “Fantastic”… I love it SO much!
July 23rd, 2008 at 5:27 pm
Haha. That was pretty funny. Who brings a cell phone on stage and leaves it on?
July 23rd, 2008 at 6:05 pm
Aw, I don’t know what is sweeter; my 6 degree of Jensen Ackles just now or this 10 minute vid…
Whatever the case, my kid is screaming for popcorn and for me to come watch Shrek with him…
Why the 10 minute vids right when I have to log off.? booooooooooo
July 23rd, 2008 at 6:49 pm
Dude that is exactly what happened to my audio when i tried to record some of the St. Catharines show. The bass or whatever totally muffled up my audio. Then again, i was in the front row standing about 3 feet from the left-side speakers.
July 23rd, 2008 at 6:50 pm
I was at that show!!! It was the North Bay, Ontario show - Capitol Centre. Very funny…
July 23rd, 2008 at 6:52 pm
P.S. the show was FAN-TAS-TIC!
July 23rd, 2008 at 6:59 pm
Hey! I was definitely at that show too, and it was awesome! So funny.
July 23rd, 2008 at 7:37 pm
Hahaha!
Stu is HOT!!!
Wooooooooooooooo!
:D
July 23rd, 2008 at 7:41 pm
If there was no cellphone on stage, there wouldn’t be this golden material right here!
July 23rd, 2008 at 8:06 pm
I remember I had this audio clip of Matt when he was in Germany back in 1999 or something, and hes like “Think of all the fucking air miles though dude… sweeet…. ehhhh I only speak bad English though.. sorry bout that..” then starts belting out Everything is Automatic.
July 23rd, 2008 at 9:22 pm
Seriously funny.
Anybody who’s that at home on stage has obviously made the right career choice.
July 23rd, 2008 at 9:41 pm

That happened to me at Hamilton, the clips I took sounds like crap for the most part.
This video is hilarious! I wouldn’t be anywhere near as funny if it happened as Matt sang “nah nah nah naaahh” at the end of the song.
Matt almost starting the song so many times reminds me of Massey. Matt would walk to the mic and I would start a new video hoping that I could get all of Apparitions since most that I’ve seen miss the “say hello” at the beginning. After a few close calls before starting the song, I lucked out and started to record just as he said say hello. I was quite happy.
Man, the banter in the video is fucking gold.
July 23rd, 2008 at 10:21 pm
And the moments leading up to Say Hello had my in stitches wondering if Matt would crack up when he finally got around to singing it… DIDN’T HAPPEN.. dude, yes, you did pick the right career.. how do you do that? turn it right off, and start singing? Once I’m laughing that hard, I can’t stop and there is no way in hell I’m singin ‘Say hello’ with cracking up…. right, it’s not my song..
July 23rd, 2008 at 10:57 pm
This is one of the most hilarious videos I have ever seen.
“Your cousin’s hot.”
July 23rd, 2008 at 11:16 pm
Fuck, that was gold.
July 23rd, 2008 at 11:17 pm
LMFAO!!! Seen this already and it’s a fave of mine on YT. Cracking Apparitions too…beautiful.

I’m with Eva. Forget Stu’s cousin; Stu is hot. :P
July 24th, 2008 at 6:42 am
This is GREAT! As always, the banter makes the show that much better and how it can get any better is beyond me..
I third the fact that Stu is hot!!! : )
July 24th, 2008 at 6:45 am
Video no longer available. Phooey.
July 24th, 2008 at 7:10 am
I think it is really great that almost 10 years later you are still playing this song live to a big crowd of people. For someone like myself who loved this song when it came out it is really nice to see it and you still going strong. btw, i really like this version with the lap steel. It takes a helluva lot to last in this business as you no doubt know. I think this shows a integrity can take you a long way.

July 24th, 2008 at 9:36 am
I saw it on Youtube… I’m still LMFAO..

July 24th, 2008 at 9:41 am

The rule is: If you wear anything under the kilt, it’s not a kilt anymore. It’s a dress. *nods*

Oh man, that is classic..
Good pic… Eva, did you snap that? V nice.
July 25th, 2008 at 5:45 pm
That’s bloody brilliant. I hope someone managed to “archive” that show with better audio. Who the hell brings their phone on stage with them? Hell, I leave mine in the CAR when I’m at a concert - nevermind the stage. :D
Rico… hmm… I’ll never forget - I’m pretty sure it was the 2nd Nite at the Mod Club in Toronto (maybe Orangeville), when someody yelled for it and Matt’s response was: “Rico. Umm… what part of me resembles a snowball in hell? No part of me, that’s what.” And then he ripped into Empty Road.

You know, you really are funny. It was a fabulous surprise - even when you were sick here in Cleveland you had me cracking up. Hmmm, could the Matt Good Comedy Special be far behind…? ;)
July 25th, 2008 at 11:25 pm
Yes, I think you should go on the road as back up to Russell Peters… That is, unless he’s already contacted you to be his next opening number… God, that would be some classic shit, man.
