Knock Yourselves Around A Bit

Space July 22, 2008, Matthew Good

I should write about musical genres more often. Perhaps it will eventually come to blows. Not sure I’d be against that, I’ve been a little bored.

Knock yourselves around a bit, pit the DJ against the guitar player, thin the herd. I’m actually a fan of a lot of electronic music. Mind you, most of it was made in the 70’s, but nonetheless. I mean, it doesn’t get much better than Here Come The Warm Jets now does it.

They caught Karadzic. He’s sporting the Saddam Hussein spider hole look. He was captured in Belgrade where he’s been practicing ‘alternative medicine’.

Sounds about right.

I didn’t write anything yesterday because I was otherwise engaged. A little demoing, a little designing, had the Livesey’s over for dinner.

There’s plenty of nonsense transpiring at this very moment between the poles. Countless journalists are reporting on it. Hit the Google and see what’s up. This monkey’s got some finger drums to play.

    Designing what? Just professional curiosity…
I can’t believe it took this long to find Karadzic. I visited that part of Europe three years after the atrocities. Such a shock. All the villagers wanted to do was forget – and talk about English football :0)

You’ve got to hand it to Karadzic though. That’s a pretty respectable beard he’s got going on there.
(Not that he’s a respectable person however, just the beard).

Some people get really, really possessive of things they like and incredibly offended if someone else’s opinion differs. Read the Batman review over at CBC, and then peruse the comments… people get all frothy and rabid so easily. YOU MUST LIKE WHAT I LIKE! HOW DARE YOU DISAGREE, YOU MORON, YOU’RE TOO STUPID TO LIVE! *shrugs* There’s a lot of shit in the world worth getting worked up about; the fact that someone you’ve never met doesn’t appreciate electronica, or some critic doesn’t heap praise on a movie you like, are two things that don’t quite make the list.

Speaking of English Football Matt, when are we going to hear your thoughts on the upcoming EPL season and Arsenal’s chances this year?

I’m with you 100 million% , KET. I have never really understood how having a opinion about something makes it mandatory that everyone accept it. Hell last time I checked, thats why they were called opinions. *shrugs*
And last time I checked anyone can spin a record, but it takes pure talent to actually create a record for the DJ’s to spin. So Matthew, you keep being that amazing guitar player and singer/song writer and one day who knows, maybe P Diddy, or whatever name he has this week, might borrow a sample from one of your songs and DJ’s can spin it anew..

The best part is the “lifestyle” articles he’s apparently been writing. Better Homes and Hideouts? That’s so fucked up it has to be true.

I remember when I used to decide whether someone was ‘friendship material’ on what type of music they listened to… however, that was when I was like 10!
I can think of better things to argue about…

“I didn’t write anything yesterday because I was otherwise engaged.”…
What!? You have a life beyond this website!? Who would’ve known… :P

Anywho… this little ‘monkey’ is on her way to ‘Hit the Google’

What’s completely baffling about Karadzic is that the guy is incredibly talented and very bright. He graduated from medical school, practiced psychology and has won numerous literary awards. If i’m not mistaken I believe he was also a published poet. It’s hard to understand how a person with all of these gifts and abilities suddenly finds himself wandering down such a wicked path. Hate is always a terrible thing, but in this magnitude its hard to even fathom…

Now hold on a minute here. Just because you’re an international, evil super-genius brought up on war crimes charges for the slaughter of scores of innocent people, doesn’t mean your beard can’t earn you a commendation. I for one would be happy to see beards like that roaming around the Stanley Cup playoffs, or better yet, running the Kentucky Derby. Why is it that no jockeys ever grow Triple Crown beards? Seriously, I think it would improve the sport.

To celebrate, check out medieval Bosnian music ’sevdalinka’ which derives from the words for ‘black bile’ - a substance then purported to control human feelings and emotions.

Holy crap there are a lot of music styles:

One electronic album which seemed particularly brilliant as of late was Untrue by Burial. Classic dubstep, but far more atmospheric than most. It really captured the bleak, gritty atmosphere of London better than anything I’ve heard. Check it out :)

Matt that post gave me the impression that you are happy at the moment… or gunned, one of the two.

Phaedra: Avalanche was released on vinyl . Good luck finding a copy tho. Last time I saw a copy of it it was 80 bucks in a used record store. That was years ago.

Bring on the guitars, I say. Eighties electronic leaves me cold. Look up The Longpigs, a great Sheffield band (great guitars, though no where near as good as you, of course):

Besides, you shouldn’t be bored. You should have plenty to do pre your trip over here (which reminds me: I’m waiting). Ever tried to plan a UK train journey on the web? Good luck with that one.
I’m off to London on business today – I’ll snap The Emirates for you as we cruise into Kings Cross Station if I can… ;0)

It’s a bit odd these days to hear Daft Punk in commercials for car manufacturers, I must admit.

Karadzic sure did have that Evil Santa look going. I’d shudder to think that I’d unknowingly been one of his “alternative medicine” patients.

Matt, if you liked ‘Here Come The Warm Jets’ I would suggest listening to the album ‘Camping 2′ from Bpitch Control (if you go to itunes and just type Bpitch, it will get you there)

As well, if you are wanting some more that is similar to ‘Here Come The Warm Jets’ I could suggest going to http://www.beatport.com and looking under the ‘Minimal’ Genre. It is a website that is very much similar to iTunes, but it is all electronic music.

I would attempt to suggest artists to look under for the minimal section, but searching a label (Bpitch Control, MotherShip, Safari Electronic) is far better to do in the electronic music industry as any joe-blow with a keyboard can make a song and release it.

Electro is a genre that I have followed for a long time, and my brother DJs minimal is Hong Kong. So, I am not expert, but I know a decent amount. If you do get a listen to, enjoy.

    Cheers,
    Brett

You don’t like programming with MIDI?

My sense of rhythm is not quite good enough to pound out the drums on a keyboard, but I can hear it in my head and program it in MIDI with AppleLoops (GarageBand) and it works well.

“He was a highly cultured man, he was very tolerant, he had a sense of humour, he was very positive, he was very intellectual - so he was a great person.”

Thank goodness that was cleared up otherwise I would have thought Karadzic should be held accountable for his (other) actions.

Does anyone remember Bjork? Her music was outside the box but I still kind of liked it.

Check out Gling Glo - it’s her jazz stuff before she was Bjork on her own.
