Lights Out
July 14, 2008, Matthew Good Just as I posted this morning’s entry – and I mean when I literally clicked ‘publish’ – the power went out. It’s not expected to come back on until tomorrow, the result of an underground transformer exploding. A few people were trapped in the elevator in the building when I left, as in the event of an outage one of the elevators remains active, powered by a generator, so people have continued to use it throughout the day. But being that the building is so hot, there was little point in trying to ride it out.
Casey
Casey is doing a little better out here at my parent’s place. He’s moving around and trying to coax my father into throwing his ball. Today I applied some Polysporin to his feet, as parts of them look raw and almost puss filled. I don’t think that he’s in any immediate danger, but will continue to watch him. He’s eating regularly and isn’t exhibiting any other signs of distress, though he continues to lick his feet.
Follow Up
I was going to suggest, after posting this morning’s entry, that we start some sort of action to send the Department Of National Defence a few hundred copies of Lester Grau’s The Bear Went Over the Mountain: Soviet Combat Tactics in Afghanistan. It was published in 1996, so you’d think someone over there would have perused it by now.

Good to hear to got out of that chaos in time. I hope Casey’s feet heal up. Poor thing.
I love it when the power goes out.
I have no choice but to turn to ‘primitive’ ways, or I just sleep.
Good to hear the Casey’s doing better…
raw and puss filled??? could he have burnt his pads??? maybe some heat stroke lead to his throwing up the other day??? I hope you’re still going to take him to the vet tomorrow, might be best just to make sure he’s alright.
I read about that this morning and wondered if you were in the middle of it. Will be interesting to see what caused it… or do they know yet?
Casey must have walked on something (contact dermatitis). I hope you still take him in in the a.m. though. Ouch for the poor baby.
Contact dermatitis or possibly allergic reaction to something - either one would have him licking his paws that way and refusing to walk. If it were winter I’d say sidewalk salts burned his poor feet, but it’s summer so the antifreeze is a good guess. The vomiting could also be antifreeze too; it tastes sweet to animals despite the fact it can poison them very easily.
Keep an eye out. As long as he’s drinking fluids and responsive, he’s not doing bad but if he starts refusing water please try to get to an (unfortunately way overpriced) emerg vet clinic. I hope the poor little one’s okay!
I am glad Casey is doing better, hopefully he still gets into the vet just to be safe.
In regards to sending copies of the book… why not? Let’s do it! Let’s see if we can get a discount rate and collect donations from people from the site and buy as many books as we can with the donations and then “FedEx” them to the DOD.
What do you think?
People walk around in a daze that’s unsettled
And they’re thinking of drinking until the morning
Never doing nothing about the trouble on the way
When the lights go out with out warning
Out back is the place where I watch it unravel
And the chalkboard has it’s own ladybug
Unkeep is low and the wall are un-level
And no one has a clue what they’re doing
There’s a blackout for me and one for you too
There’s some white heat keeping everybody down
When the grid snaps on
You’ll be picking up the peices of the blackout
There’s nothing you can do about it.
I can feel that the Heat is killing everything around
And I hope that it soon gets colder
The lights are just a flicker and power is underground
And the city is about to smolder
Ther’s a blackout for me and one for you too
There’s some white heat keeping everybody down
When the grid snaps on
You’ll be picking up the pieces of the blackout
There’s nothin’ you can do about it
There’s nothin’ you can do about it
Nothin’ you can do about it
There’s nothing you can do

Ah, on-mass power outages. Oh how I miss how the neighbourhood actually socialized with one an other. :)
I had a feeling you might be affected by that today.. I first heard about it at work very early because we thought it was our property; it was first thought that our Substation Cathedral Square was where the fire was, but it was outside the sub, so I guess our guys who were down there were getting some nice bucks tonite!!!!!
It’s amazing though how the media saying ‘things are kaos downtown’ makes everyone all panicky.. then what they were reporting was re-dick…. we still don’t even know what happened but the media immediately said that a generator in a manhole caught fire as soon as it kicked it, due to the power outage… it was the domino affect with the sigh’s at work when the guys read that, because even we didn’t know what happened and so if we don’t know, how did the media know?.. MY GOD.
Hope Casey is doing better. Careful with the Polysporin…
My cat has a nervousness problem which causes her to lick her belly raw. Usually the vet gives her a steriod shot to calm her down and some antibiotics.
If I catch it early, what works really well is a bitter spray. Every time she licks it tastes so bad she just won’t do it anymore.
Maybe that would help Casey to stop licking for now……poor thing.
Go BC Hydro!!!! That is one of my guys in that picture…..
Sorry, big deal, it turned out to be in the end…. and all I’m worried about is if my guy is showing his best side.

Nice to hear your dog is okay.
Hmm. Then maybe send Nikolai Lanine’s stuff to Foreign Affairs and CIDA? Actually, though, I think they are already aware of these things and pursuing their perceived interests nonetheless (i.e., with no regard for the fact that Canadians have consistently opposed it, as the Strategic Council data shows going back to 2006).
Where do we make donations to send out copies of this book?
Well it’s great to hear that Casey’s feeling a bit better - a good sign that he’s wanting to play.
Still curious as to what happened with him. I know the ex’s dog did a number on his pads once running around on hot concrete…we learned the hard way with that one. Despite the fact that he still begs us to throw his ball in the parking lot, we steer him over to the grass. Hopefully it’s nothing more serious and with a little tlc he’ll be fully mended. But there’s always that nagging question of whether or not someone deliberately planted something to deter him…God, that would be despicable.
Hope you manage to catch some sleep. Geez, you have a lot of shit happen too, huh? Your poor guys have been through the ringer and you’ve been the one holding things up. They’re lucky you’re a rock.
Glad to hear that being at your parents has Casey feeling a bit better… poor little guy!
Aw, good to hear about Casey. :)
Polysporin is awesome! My 2 and 4 yr olds call it my “magic cream” b/c it makes them feel better and it doesn’t hurt! Glad to hear that Casey is doing better.
aww poor little guy. its great to her that he’s starting to feel better though. ^_^
omg Casey, I feel so bad just hearing about him. It must be painful to have to see him go through that… and even more painful for him. I hope he heals up soon, give him a hug for me :)
I misread part of your post as ‘in the event of an outrage.’
Sounds like a good title for a public service pamphlet. Only YOU can combat grave injustice.
I was watching CTV news last night and they were reporting said blackout. Just before or just after, I don’t remember exactly, they made reference to the Canadian Army studying what the Russians did, or failed to do during thier turn at the country. Is this why you mentioned in ‘Follow Up; that we send The Bear Went Over The Mountain to the DND?
I myself am in the Canadian Army and both the report and your suggestion made me laugh. Laugh in support of.
Speaking to yourself in public just answered my comment.
