Social Networking Applications Update

Space July 6, 2008, Matthew Good

I thought it best to go through the various social networking applications that I use and clarify the status of each. As many of you know, I am a huge proponent of many social networking applications, especially as they apply to the creation of cohesive online communities. That said; having given some thought to my personal application of them to do with this website and fan participation, here’s a quick rundown on my thoughts regarding each.

Flickr

In my opinion flickr remains the best social networking application out there. True, its primary function is photographic, but unlike other applications it has caused me absolutely zero headaches, which would be why my page has remained unchanged for so long.

In truth, flickr is no different than Facebook. True, it lacks most of Facebook’s annoying interactive features, but at its base it is still an application that allows for the creation of a community and the ability to employ an internal messaging system. It’s design and usability is also beyond reproach.

If you have a flickr page, I have never had a problem adding others as friends. Just ensure that you check out my profile page first.

Facebook

I’ll not deny that I think Facebook neat. It is, in truth, simply a much better and well thought out version of Mysapce in many ways. But despite those positives that it offers, it also has a great deal of negatives.

The first is the recent decision to have users go online to see which of their friends is online. Thus, if you have thousands of friends, the vast majority of which you don’t actually know, you’re commonly bombarded by chat messages when you do go online. This places me in a very awkward position, as I feel it rude not to respond. At the same time, I simply cannot conduct chat conversations every time I am online with dozens of people simultaneously. Therefore, I commonly have to ignore people that are messaging me and that can cast me in a negative light to some.

Second, and this has become quite a serious problem, I have been fielding friend requests from people that have created fake accounts that then message me asking questions regarding my personal life. There have been a few problems with regards to online groups as well, so I wanted to make a statement about them.

No official Matthew Good Facebook fan page exists. If you happen to come across one, please report it to Facebook. Secondly, I do not endorse the content of any Facebook group dedicated to me. They are, in my opinion, nothing more than hotbeds of trash gossip replete with hearsay and fantastical assumptions. In some cases they are home to individuals who have cultivated personal grudges that both don’t know me, nor have ever met me. In my line of work that sort of thing is to be expected, and I have dealt with that reality for well over a decade, but I wanted to make crystal clear that I, in no way, have any affiliation with any group created by any third party.

Lastly, because I have employed Facebook as a fan oriented social networking application, I have never been able to use it to simply stay in touch with friends and family – which is what most people use it for. Thus, given the problems that I’ve had with it in the past, I’ve decided to use my Facebook page for personal reasons only. Again, I would kindly ask those that will be removed as friends in the days ahead to please take no offense. As many of you are aware, fans still have access to membership here at the website and on my flickr page, which I think is more than ample. You can also join my del.icio.us network as well.

I realize that my Facebook page was a great place to view photos from shows and video. In the weeks ahead we’ll add a link on the website to the flickr group that was created some time ago. If you have a flickr account you’re more than welcome to post photos and video to it.

Myspace

For some bizarre reason completely unknown to me, Myspace is somehow still alive. I have absolutely no idea why given its horrid functionality and absolutely abhorrent layout. Obviously the application’s most popular feature remains its audio features, which is probably the reason why it has survived this long, and is the only reason why I still have a page. In the future we’ll continue to update the audio content, but truth be told we pay little attention to the page’s other content.

del.icio.us

Of all the social networking applications that I use, deli.icio.us is, without question, my favorite. Obviously there are a whole host of similar applications out there, such as Digg and Technorati, but I have always preferred del.icio.us to all of them. I routinely update my bookmarks; so if you’re interested in joining my network, please feel free to do so.

My sentiments exactly. I’ve always hated that site and the only reason I bother with it ever is because some musicians choose to only place news and updates on it. Luckily that trend seems to be on the decline.

I’ve never really used Flickr (other than to check out pictures and videos that you post) or del.icio.us, though I’ve been meaning to do that one of these days. I don’t mind Facebook, but I’ve used it much less ever since they implemented those damn applications. The chat feature seems neat, but I can’t really be bothered to use it since I can more easily chat with people via MSN.

You know, it’s really unfortunate. Until recently, the Facebook group dedicated to you was a great place to discuss your music, your upcoming tours or tours in progress, share excitement in general with other fans. Now, all it seems to be overrun with is idiots with no other purpose in life but to stir up shit, and post non-stop about a) what an “asshole” you supposedly are in real life, b) “Ooooh look what he posted on his blog”, or c) ridiculous speculation about your personal life.

Honestly, I don’t get how some people can devote that much of their time to whining and bitching on FACEBOOK, of all things. I’ve really even been considering leaving the group, because of the ridiculous content it only ever seems to contain, lately.

Anyway. All that is a round-about way of saying I support your decision to become more private with your facebook. With all the shit people have been trying to start? Fuck, who can blame you.

Thanks for the clarifications, Matt. I’ve been a part of your “community” on this website, Flickr and del.icio.us for quite sometime now and have found them absolutely great for keeping informed about your music, writing, art, social and political commentary, and links to alternative reading. I believe that’s more than enough to keep any fan happy.

Regarding Facebook, although it was cool to have you listed as a “friend”, the main reason I have it is because it’s the best way to stay in touch with my nieces and nephew. And as for Myspace, I’ve never really liked it so rarely venture onto it unless it has the only site for a musician.

    Privacy is very important.
IMO you do more than any other artist as far as fan interaction. That is something that I appreciate very much.
I don’t think anyone can complain about you needing your private life.
That being said. Thinning your friend list is a very difficult thing to do without offending people.
Another one of the Facebook frustrations I suppose.
    Good Luck!

    Completely understandable.

Funny, I always feel rude when I ignore the (small) handful of requests I get to interact with others, whether it be via chat, taking a quiz or accepting a donkey from them. I can’t even imagine the magnitude in which you are bombarded with these.

Somehow the people pleaser in me feels that I must at least acknowledge these, but I don’t want to. It’s a pain in the ass. I recently added a woman as a friend (through a hockey app) and now I have her teenage son sending me stuff…thanks, but no thanks. When I’m there, I’m doing what I want to but often feel pressured and like I want to hide. Kind of like the Jehovah’s Witness Sunday morning door knock.

I have actually found Facebook to be a really useful tool for maintaining contact with casual acquaintances who would otherwise fall off my radar…I have even had a few of them turn into actual friendships after getting a chance to learn more about certain people who express themselves better in writing than in person (since I’m one of those too). It’s too bad that middle ground like that doesn’t work in a situation complicated by fame and whatnot. In any case, Matt, I’m glad you’re claiming some personal space for yourself…sad as I am that we didn’t meet under different circumstances in a parallel universe so that you could be my real friend (I’m sure I’m not alone there).

    Matt:

In all honesty, it’s kinda cool to have somebody listed as a “friend” on Facebook, however, we all need our space. You’re a very accessible individual who is much more-so than any other musician/artist I know of. When I log on to Facebook, I find myself annoyed by one or two chat windows popping up on a regular basis so I don’t think any of us can begin to comprehend the level of bombardment you must face on a daily basis. That said, it’s sad to see you go, however, it’s not as though we can’t reach you through this website, right?

That being said anybody who is offended by being “delisted” as a friend really isn’t a fair individual to begin with and it’s safe to say they’re not a person you’d want contact with anyhow.

And, Deb, you’re right. It’s probably MORE ANNOYING than the Jehovah’s Witness Sunday morning door knock that you mentioned…

Just a thought regarding Facebook: why not setting it up so that the default is that you are offline? I do that because I have students as friends on Facebook and when I log onto Facebook late at night, I do not want to chat about assignments or the next midterm as it would be unfair to other students. Although I add students as friends after they have finished courses with me, I can’t prevent them from taking other classes I teach and putting me in an ackward position if I were to do course-related stuff on Facebook. With respect to this post, I only am part of this community and am not one of your friends on Facebook. I think here is plenty and enough. I agree with sweet chili that your fans will survive without Facebook!

I just wanted to mention VIRB, which I think is a great Myspace-type network for bands. Ever since you recommended it a while back my band has used it as our central website. It has a great clean look and a layout that you have full control over. Plus you are able to upload 30 songs for listening or downloading. The only downfall that I can see with VIRB is that there aren’t a whole lot of people on it. I’m not sure why it never caught on.

The people I communicate the most with on Facebook are those I actually see in person on a regular basis, which is kind of funny, but also sort of makes sense: they’re the people I like best in the world, so whether it’s virtual or real-life interaction, they’re the ones I gravitate towards.

I don’t like or have a Myspace. Stopped using my Flickr this past year. II used it for storing family photos because I was too lazy to burn them and was afraid I lose them on my hard-drive someday.

I love my Facebook. I have gotten in contact with a lot of my high school friends, etc. I have no problem with that. One could say that at 43 years old perhaps I’m living in the past. Sure, to some extent perhaps. I am an addict of playing on-line scrabble so I use the Scrabulous application. Over 1500 games played with folks throughout the world. Sad, but true. I could drink :-)

I totally understand why the chat feature would be a pain in the ass for you to have. My chat feature is only used periotically and even that feels like a chore. I’m not a fan of real time chat or I’d activate an MSN messenger account again. I’m too busy playing scrabulous, to be bothered with chatting.

For the most part I hate TV, can’t think of anything worthwhile to do when I go out most of the time, so I love and live in my PC :-)

I just keep myself as OFFLINE on Facebook…it’s a really simple solution to your problem, and means you never have to be rude. I changed it once, and it just stays that way… I don’t go on Facebook to “chat” so I find it annoying… that’s what my MSN is for.

Myspace is awful. But, i do like being able to go online and find cool small indie bands that I’ve never heard of and listen to their music. That’s pretty cool.

No offense taken on the Facebook thing… It was kind of a weird/fanatical kind of thing to have “Matthew Good” as my “friend”… a bit strange, and can be taken too far by people I’m sure!

I still blog at MySpace. :( I would love to start a real one, but I don’t have the money for a proper editor or even a domain name for that mater. There is a small bright side though: because it’s gone so far by the way side, most of family members and co-workers have yet to tap into it, so there’s still a comfortable level of privacy for me. Or at least until they discover it somewhere along the line. I never really thought of Flickr as being a social networking site, however I do like it for being the easiest way I could get my pictures online. Of course, I get to toot my own horn when I’m able to submit photos to the different groups and that’s fun, but I wouldn’t ever be able to use it to network.

As for Facebook, I will admit I will miss you as a friend, but I’ll get over it. I didn’t even really know there was an expasive Matt Good fan group on Facebook. I stick to any third party fan appreciation to Near Fantastica.

Well, let’s face it - if a fan actually takes the time to register for a message board completely separate from any networking site, chances are they registered because they’re looking to have a decent discussion, and not read up on any tabloid fodder.

You know you can still chat people up at will on the FB chat if you always appear offline, right? Personally I hate being instant messaged at all (hardly use MSN) because I get overwhelmed easily when ten windows pop up. I hate that aspect of Facebook and frankly, they only added it because MySpace has it.

MySpace is the antichrist but unfortunately it’s a really good way to track musician news for now (not enough have migrated over). Aside: Music community-wise, my favourite new find is thesixtyone.com. Love it. I’d love to see your music on there because the users there are into music with intelligence and meaning moreso than what the mainstream says is good. Come wander over (I’m under likeadeadstar over there). In fact, I encourage all of you lovely folk to come over and drink the Kool-Aid with me.

As for Facebook, I completely respect the choice you’re making. It’s unfortunate though for me because I have been trying to really pare down my online profiles and such because I’m just not keeping up with people enough. I at one time was using Facebook, MySpace, Vox, Livejournal, Blogger, Google Reader, several message boards… And things just suffered greatly. I’ve got one person who won’t leave MySpace for Facebook (for similar ‘can’t keep up’ reasons) or I’d cancel that profile outright. I don’t have a Flickr account and very few people in my circle do (most of them are on Facebook and Livejournal or both) and I can’t see it being wise to sign up for yet another account, so I’ll miss the tracking of photos and videos through Facebook. But that’s me and it’s trivial and small. C’est la vie!

A thought: I know you’ve said there’s no official Matt Good fanpage on Facebook. Maybe you could start one? It would allow people to post stuff there like photos and videos and such. Totally up to you. Moderate membership maybe?

Another thing to consider, since you’re taking your FB more private: turn off the ability to search you in FB or make your profile private, such that people who search you at best can see only your photo and poke you (and then you can decide to friend them). Disable messaging too, even. The privacy settings section isn’t the most user-friendly but if you click through all the sections in ten minutes you can be a ninja like me. ;) The only way I can be found now is I show on the friends lists of my friends and people can poke me and that’s it.

This brought to you by the girl who’s been using computers since Windows 3.1.

I have to say that I have a major problem with facebook I will admit to having an account, but I think that the amount of targeted advertising that people are being bombarded with is insulting. The fact that some of the largest companies are using all those applications (that you feel obligated to add because your friend asked you to) to figure out what types of things you as a person in the consumer age that we live in are interested in and are most likely to consume to me at the very least is a scary thought. My facebook page is extremely minimal I started to buy into it at one point, but when I found out that the community actually saves cookies on your computer for future advertising use that’s when I said ok my name is up there and thats it.

facebook is okay if you use it for what it was intended on being used for. Keeping in touch. I delete people once I don’t talk to them for an extended period of time it just makes no sense to have 100 people on your list that you don’t even converse with. I did have Mr. Good on mine, but that was for a common bond - concert photos and videos. Myspace lol that’s funny I forgot it existed dear lord. Well I do thank you Mr. Good for keeping us on here and flikr - that’s still more personal than a lot of people in your position would do.

Hahaha, that’s hilarious. The personality crack. But yeah, I also hate how I can’t disable the ads on facebook. It reminds me every time I log on that I’m not a model. Stupid facebook.

I am not sure if someone mentioned this already, but your Facebook profile is still partly public; you may be aware of this but I’m just letting you know.

Brilliantly spoken. I used to be a large MySpace fanatic, but have completely fallen out of it. This occured at least 2 years ago when I discovered Facebook.

Facebook is also quite annoying. It was great until they allowed douchebag after douchebag to create their own applications, ready for the douchebags of the world to add. It makes me sick when I visit someone’s page and they have, literally, dozens of applications listed under their profile picture.

I rarely visit either MySpace of Facebook anymore. I only use MySpace for its music feature, and I only use Facebook for its iLike application. These other SNAs you mention… I am aware of them, but I figure that Facebook and MySpace provide enough hate for me.

By the way, your music owns my life.

Now what the hell am I going to do? If I can’t ask you, Matthew, “How’s it going, big chief” and other sorts of greetings with the word chief in them!

    You’re killing me, man!

I wouldnt feel bad about your decision Matt…i think we will all understand why you wont use facebook for your fans anymore, it has gotten so anoying trying to tell people i dont want to be a f*cking PIRATE or a VAMPIRE…there is plenty of other ways to get a hold of information about you and your music and other interesting things…I think you already do so much more for your fans than other artist/musicians…and there are too many people wasting their energy trying to prove why you are an asshole…I’ll finally get a an account on Flicker, and keep up with things there..Cheers Matt, and have a good day…cant wait to see you play again…
P.S. what do u think about ARSENAL”S chances taking the Premier League title from Manchester United this year?
