Woke Up From A Dream
July 23, 2008, Matthew Good For some reason I was exhausted yesterday. I ended up taking several naps throughout the day, and following the first I woke up, spent some time looking at the ceiling, and decided that the track that I had been working on wasn’t up to snuff. So I wandered over to the computer and deleted it.
Then I went back to sleep.
When I woke up the second time I had something ghosting around in my head, so wandered back over to my computer, set up some gear, and started feverishly tracking.
I must have spent several hours working on it before going back to bed again.
I woke up for the third time around nine last night having completely forgot that I had recorded anything earlier that day. Thankfully, I had left the recording window open, so when I pressed the space bar and woke the computer, it was sitting right there in front of me.
It’s strange how shit happens.
Being that the running time of the record is already almost 50 minutes, without this new addition, it will probably end up only having nine tracks on it. Given that Coldplay’s new record is 40 minutes long, with ten tracks, I don’t see that being a problem.
Anyway, I have to head to the hospital for a long overdue lung examination and then run some errands. While I’m gone, here’s a preview of the track. I’ve faded it after a few minutes, given that it will no doubt be ripped. As usual, this is a rough demo, so take that into consideration. Also remember that it will be taken down later on today.

I am glad I managed to catch the teaser. Very good, cool base arrangement. I prefer walking bass-lines myself but that’s from the Cure/Rush influence (Yes the Cure do have some awesome bass-lines, though not as complicated as Rush’s, let’s face it, Simon Gallup of the Cure is not a tech-nut like Geddy Lee is).

I don’t think any of us would be upset if the album ran 80 minutes in length! Don’t cut it too short!!
Sounds haunting and wonderful… And let me add to the chorus of ‘longer albums are fine by me’. One of my favourite albums is 74 minutes long and not a shred of it feels ‘rammed on’. It isn’t the length or number of tracks; it’s quality and if all of the tracks fit together and feel strong, release them all.

YAY for demo previews! Ahhhhhh, lovely way to end the workday. Love it, as usual. It’s funny how your latest songs (at least the few I’ve heard) all seem to have the same sort of feel, like they really do mesh well together, and yet they’re completely different from Hospital Music. I don’t know if it’s intentional or just where your creative mind happens to be these days, but it’s incredible. I can’t describe music for the life of me, but it’s like they’re… layered and complex and rich, if that makes any sense. Awesome.

back in the day…40 minutes was a strong album… I wouldn’t worry about having to fill the entire Cd, just because there is space.
Also… Far too many artists put out CD’s with 15 songs when, in reality, they should have jetisoned about 5 or 6. This creates a CD that one can not possibly listen to at one sitting. Either by time constraints, or shear boredom with the subject matter.
Given both these statement, 10 songs, 50 minutes is more than ideal, in my opinion.
