A Little Gaming Help (Answer Found)

Space August 22, 2008, Matthew Good

I’m not a big gamer. In fact, over the last four years the only computer game that I have really played is solitaire – which I love. One of my favourite games of all time was Myst and the sequels that followed it – which were much better than the original in my opinion. Last night I tried to load Myst IV onto my desktop but encountered problems with its installation, which I would imagine is because it was released in 2004 and the OS used at the time was much different than Leopard, not to mention the change in chips. I bought it on a whim back then but never really played it, so I thought, being that I’ve been sick, I would give it a go. No luck, unfortunately.

Anyway, after doing some research I discovered that there is a final installment in the series, Myst V End Of Ages. I was wondering if anyone out there has played it and if it’s worth getting – or if it can even still be purchased? Further, will it work on my laptop or desktop?

If anyone can provide some help I’d appreciate it. Thanks.

Well, if this is the same problem that I had with previous versions of Rainbow Six, then it will not work. However, you might be able to install the End of Ages with no problems. Having saying that, if it is a MAC that you are installing it on. I doubt this will work at all. Windows and MAC do not talk to well each other. Hope this helps you out. Besides, I have played that game and love it. Should see if I can find it and reinstall it too.

Even after 11-12 years of following you, I had no idea you liked solitaire. It’s a great game for sure.

If you are so inclined, you could download it if you can’t find it in stores. A “friend of mine” tells me that Torrent sites such as Torrent Reactor can be used for downloading many things… games included. “He” even provided me with a link to a Myst V for Mac torrent. Of course, you would have to also download software for downloading torrents if you didn’t already have some, and you may also need to download and install a virtual cd/dvd drive such as Daemon tools. And there is the ever present risk of downloading a virus along with the game (although maybe not if you are using a mac).

You can get that version of Myst for $10 (on a PC at least). It’s at Futureshop and probably EB Games at Metrotown or any other EB Games.

There’s a demo of the game here for Mac: http://www.apple.com/downloads/macosx/games/demos_updates/mystvendofages.html

If you want to see if it’ll run.

Here are a couple of reviews for Myst from two gaming websites I visit daily:

Gamespot
IGN

And definitely download the demo Anton posted to see if you do enjoy the game. Reviews and stuff are great, but the best review is hands on experience.

I LOVE Myst. And I love all those old adventure games… Leisure Suit Larry, Kings Quest, etc.

But by far the coolest game of this type I’ve found is Sanitarium. It’s described as being …”a journey through your own madness to potential salvation.” It’s dark, creepy, has lots of cool puzzles and stuff and messes to get out of. There’s ghosts of dead kids, nutjobs, zombies, etc. It’s got really eerie music and stuff. Best played loud and in the dark…. if you DARE!! Muuuahahahahaha!! (That’s supposed ot be a creepy laugh).

Have you considered VMWare Fusion? Regular price is $80 but I have a friend there and I can get it for you for $35.

With Fusion you can install whatever (Linux - yay or Windows - Boo or Sun’s Solaris etc…) and then you can install your PC version for $10, as mentioned by Anton.

Just email me satchboogieca@yahoo.ca and I can hook you up with a Legit copy of VMWare (and even a Legit copy of Windows as I have friends at Micro$oft as well).

Best of luck.

The last game I played was Grand Theft Auto 3, and when I found myself having urges to ram the cop cars and run, well I knew it was time to stop playing that game.

Cheers,
~Robert

My mom and used to play Myst together when I was a kid. It was very enjoyable. I believe we made attempts at Myst V, but for whatever reason didn’t get that far into it. From what I can recall it’s very much like the previous versions of Myst, and I mean that in a fond way.

Direct to drive (http://www.direct2drive.com/Search.aspx?SearchTerm=myst) has some of the myst games available for download. I am not sure if they will work with a Mac or even Vista for that matter. Just make sure you don’t download the guides that they have for sale.

You might try something like crossover:

http://www.bit-tech.net/gaming/2008/04/22/crossover_games_for_mac/1

You can download a free trial from the website. I’m not sure if wine or cedega work on OSX (they might since it is BSD based) but you can get many Windows games working well with that type of software on unix based OSes (linux, bsd , etc..). Plus it is more of a compatibility layer than an emulator like VMWare and therefore much faster.

I’m not bashing the mac , there’s a lot of things it does well but gaming is not one of them. I guess it was never an area they really wanted to pursue. So I get a sense of pity since that mac users are playing games that were out on the pc 10-15 years ago. There’s truly a lot of great titles you’re missing out on. I highly recommend Deus Ex. It’s sort of a sci-fi political thriller with a story line that’s absolutely enthralling. It’s been voted as one of the best games of all time. It came out in 2000 but it contains a lot of themes that are eerily similar to what’s in the news today. Also the Half Life series is nothing short of amazing. Also recommend system shock 2. I think there is also a mac port of Sim City 4 which I also recommend.

Metacritic.com gives Myst V a 80/100, which is obviously pretty good.

Myst V for the mac can be bought easily on ebay.ca (sorry if this link doesn’t post): http://search.ebay.ca/search/search.dll?from=R40&_trksid=m37&satitle=myst V mac&category0=

It’s not a question of whether the platform is good enough for games — it definitely is. But the Mac market is still relatively small compared to the Windows market, so game makers focus on that first. I have VMWare fusion at home and I can run Windows XP in a window while using Leopard. It’s great for doing anything Windows related (I use it to test websites using IE, and also to do Windows C development at work). Unlike BootCamp, you don’t have to reboot your computer to use it, so it’s a really nice solution, and it blows parallels out of the water.

Myst V DOES support PC and OSX (though I’m not sure whether there are two versions available, or if the same CD works for both). I have not personally tested it to know how well it works. I do know that they have a Demo that should be a good indication as to how well the full version will work. I haven’t tested the Demo myself due to lacking a Mac, so your milage may vary.

You can download that here: http://www.gamespot.com/pc/adventure/mystvendofages/download_6131436.html

And to the person who responded suggesting that Matt pirate the game: Do you really think somebody who makes a living off of pirateable intellectual property wants to hear that suggestion?

And a helpful blog post I found for making the software work, should you choose to purchase it (it’s what I used to get mine up and running, I’m somewhat surprised it’s still available after all this time) can be found here:

Hey Matt, I found this on the Ubi forums:

“On the new intel Macs, the installer just quits. From the Ubi forums, I worked out that you have to:
- drag the installer application from DVD1 to your hardrive;
- Open the Terminal application
- Type ‘cd ..’ and press return, then repeat a couple of times, until typing ‘ls’ and pressing return shows that you are in your main directory.
- Then type ‘cd *folder*’ and press return, then repeat until you’re in the Myst 4 directory where the files are. I know there should be a quicker way, but this is the only way that worked for me, eg. ‘cd Ubisoft’ return, ‘cd Myst4′ return.
- Then you actually ‘cd’ (change directory’ into the Myst4 application itself by typing ‘cd Myst4.app’ or whatever it’s called.
- Inside the application there are various files, and you type ‘chmod a x Myst4′ which modifies the permissions in some way.
- Then double click on your modified installer application and installation goes fine.”

It seems like a bit of a hassle, but if you really like the Myst series, and don’t want to see your money wated, then I guess it should be worth it.

Also, here is a link to the 1.0.3 patch for the game:
http://www.macgamefiles.com/detail.php?item=18413

I hope this works for you.

My suggestion? Switch to freecell. It’s so similar to solitaire but just enough different to distract from life when solitaire just isn’t cutting it.

@Pitt - I used to walk around Chilliwack for hours collecting empty pop bottles just so I’d have enough money to go play Street Fighter II for five or ten minutes at a time at this local chicken store. It’s amazing all the old games you can still get. Last Christmas I downloaded a NES emulator for my computer and worked over Dragon Warrior again. Erdrick’s Sword FTW!

I’ve never been big on fighting games, though my girlfriend’s idea to play strip-Soul Calibur will make me want to get good real fast. I could never play a fighting game like that on my cell phone though, I would need the responsiveness of a controller. If I’m not mistaken, SF2 is in the XBOX Live Arcade, and is probably worth spending the 8 bucks on.

Well, here’s the verdict, straight from the Apple website - “Not compatible with Intel Macs”. The demo wouldn’t even load. I do know that Cyan designs the games on Macs, and that they are released for the Mac at the same time as PC’s, but it was released in 2005, before the chip change, so tough luck for moi.

At least I can still get the Intel corporate discount at Papa Murphy’s Pizza. I know that doesn’t really help with the gaming problem, but hey, $2 off any take ‘n bake pizza!

Try the following:

After you have installed both disks, and with the second disk still in the Mac…
Double click Myst4 icon (nothing happens)
Go to File –>Choose “Get Info” and open the bottom arrow and set all users to Read/Write
Open Terminal (Go\Utilities)
Type: cd_ (that’s “cd” followed by a space, no quotes)
Drag the Myst4 icon into the Terminal window, which will give you the path to the app
Press return.
Type hmod a x Myst4
Press return, quit Terminal.
Double click on Myst4 icon
