A Little ‘Live At Massey Hall’ Trivia

Space August 28, 2008, Matthew Good

When it comes to live records, or at least those made back in the day when entering a studio afterwards and cleaning it up wasn’t an option, there are always intrigues and little tidbits of information that diehard fans find out and revel in.

Live At Massey Hall is no exception.

As I wrote in a previous entry, the recording is untouched - it is completely live. There was no re-tracking in a studio afterwards. But there is one interesting little turn that will be of interest to fans.

During the choruses of Everything Is Automatic I typically step away from the microphone and let the crowd sing them. On that night, the crowd mics crapped out, producing nothing more than a giant audio blur. Thankfully we were smart enough to record the show the night before in Peterborough, during which I did sing the choruses. Thus, the only alteration on the forthcoming album is that when you hear me sing the choruses of Everything Is Automatic (and just the choruses), the vocal was taken from the show recorded the night before.

There are obviously video clips of the song taken that night that clearly show me stepping away from the microphone, so someone would have figured it out sooner or later. Thus, to claim that the recording is completely taken from the Massey Hall show, and then to have such video clips discovered, would have raised some eyebrows. That would be why I’m writing about it, to inform those that will be purchasing the recording that that bit is still live, just that it was taken from the performance the night before – which is, I must admit, unfortunate, because it would have been cool to have captured the audience singing the choruses.

So there you have it. It’s still purely live, it’s just that the choruses of Everything Is Automatic come from the recording of the show the previous night.

Interesting Album Trivia

I have not heard the recording, nor do I plan on listening to it. I am, as those that know me well will tell you, a perfectionist. And while am I sure it is replete with the sorts of quirks and flaws that always end up being the best parts of live recordings, I just can’t bring myself to listen to it because I would, no doubt, tear it apart.

Seriously, Who Are They Trying to Kid?

You can vote on advertising content on Facebook now. You can label an advert misleading or uninteresting and so forth. That said, and as I mentioned last night, there is no way that the girls in those pictures are single – and if they are, they’re certainly not on the dating website that the pictures are promoting. How do I know this? That’s right, I fucking looked! Busted!

On a related note, I ended up watching You Don’t Mess With The Zoltan last night and if the girls on the beaches of Israel are that hot (and like to unabashedly disco) - I’m moving there.

Those girls get paid quite well for their appearance in advertisements like that. I remember i was at a gentlemens club one night and this girl on stage looked so familiar, did i go to school with her? no thats not it, was she a friend of a friend? no, not it either … then it hit me. She was a girl on one of those late night 1-976 type commercials!!!!! I asked her about it after. She was rather embarrassed but admitted that they paid her $500 bucks for the night and all the free drinks she wanted at this fake party to show how much of a good time it would be to call the phone number.

Can’t wait for the live album!!! and new album!!!

You’re hilarious! I can’t blame you for looking, hell, even I am tempted by these vixens…. Yes, it is the quirks that make the live recordings, like Elvis screwing up his lyrics and laughing, the rough sounds that make you feel privileged to be hearing something that is not “perfect”. A tie-in to the girls…people are always tempted by the idea of “perfection” but can’t wait to find faults, and I think, find perfection a bit intimidating and threatening. Although I admit being envious of the “perfect” babes, the men who attract me are not the body-building “perfect” specimens…it is the guy with the chipped tooth and the funny laugh who has a killer sense of humour that gets me. So, screw perfect, let’s revel in our flaws and imperfections!!!

By the way, I’m a perfectionist too…so, I know how hard it is to stop being self-critical. I can recommend some great books on the subject!

My favourite late-night commercial these days is for one of those dating chat lines, and the whole thing is just video of some really happening club with all the beautiful people dancing away to the BOOM-BOOM-BOOM music, and the voice over says, “If you can’t be here, then you need to call the (Whatever Its Name Is) Line!” So, they’re not even pretending that you’re going to talk to any of the hot girls in the ad. They’re pretty much just coming out and saying, “If you’re a loser who’s stuck at home while everyone else is out partying, call us… what other options do you have?”

I’m sure all the hot Israeli beach girls are on the dating websites alongside racky Little Miss Trouble in the picture. No doubt.

And if all the millionaires in Gotham City are superhot superheroes with fancy toys and a hint of danger, I’m moving THERE.

How far AWAY can I get from the hot girls on the beaches of Israel? Send me in the opposite direction because the hot ones mess you up right some good.

Prince says something along those lines.

Now, those demure Bangladeshi librarian types? Those cocooned butterflies? Tell me more about them.
Give me the ones that are unbearably hot while wearing smelly paint-covered overalls and reading National Geographic. Now we’re talkin’.

Did you have the crowd mics on in Peterborough? Maybe you could dub the Peterborough crowd onto the Massey recording instead of your vocals? Not that I don’t like hearing you sing the chorus, but it would be cool to hear the crowd. And the videos would match the song.

Pearl Jam makes some of their shows available after the fact and we downloaded the one from the Vancouver show that we’d attended.

It’s really funny to be able to hear yourself making an ass of yourself. I was sitting behind the stage and everything Eddie said came out as a garbled bunch of nothing to me. Kind of like Charlie Brown’s teacher. So when he instructed the crowd to whistle during one part, I missed it. Anyhow, the song ended (or at least I thought so…apparently it was just the crowd’s cue to whistle at that point) so I started to cheer like an idiot, wondering why no one else was showing any love for the song at its conclusion. I even muttered “lame” to myself at the dumbass fans who weren’t applauding the great performance, as I was. Tools. They were whistling…how ineffective. Thing was, it wasn’t over…I was supposed to be whistling at that point too (not going “WOOOOOOOOO, YEAAAAHHH!!!!!!!”). It was to be a beautiful moment but, because I was situated front row behind the stage (and extremely close to where they were making the recording), I came through like a cross between a braying donkey and a rooster trying to fly. D’oh.

Too bad on the inability to add the crowd’s contribution…I always love stuff like that. But, then again, you risk some idiot getting it all wrong.

I’m actually really happy to hear this! My sister and I missed out on tickets to Massey Hall so we drove the 1.5 hours to Peterborough and caught the show there (what a lame crowd that was. It seemed we were the only ones around us who were rockin’ out and singing along, but maybe it was due to the fact everyone’s attention was diverted to the 2 skanky girls practically screwing eachother in the seats in front of us… but I digress). So there will be a little snippet of that show too… cool!

That’s great that you will be releasing a live full band concert cd. Any thoughts on having a couple of hidden tracks from your solo acoustic tour? I can remember one of your blog entries about your acoustic performance at the Massey Theatre in which you wrote:

” Something happened last night though that was extra special. Obviously, playing a sold out show at one of the most celebrated concert halls in the nation and receiving such a response is more than reward enough, especially after some thirteen odd years of making records and touring. But something else happen in the middle of last night’s show that was rather incredible. In the middle of a song last night, I looked out over the audience and a sensation shot up and down my spine that I’ve never felt before. It was a sensation that, when my brain finally processed it, left me with the feeling that I somehow knew I had twenty more years of making music in me. It was an enormous epiphany to have in such a setting.”

I had the pleasure of seeing a couple of shows on that tour and was amazed on the rearrangements you created of your previous work as well as the stripped down rawness of Hospital Music that only an acoustic guitar can bring out. Since your intial tour of Hospital Music was so intimate and personal due to the nature of the record, it would be extra special to have even a small sample of that tour included.

Anybody else with me on this?
