A Little Quiet

Space August 25, 2008, Matthew Good

Rehearsing. Pacing the lengths of my apartment with a guitar, wandering through songs I haven’t performed acoustically in a while in preparation for this weekend’s upcoming acoustic show. You know me – in the end I’ll probably just wing it.

Sometimes you just have to.

The heat’s come back. Plans made for the fall have regrettably changed for various reasons. Still can’t sleep. The dogs are at my parents’ place and I have to admit that I am enjoying being alone. Stretch out in bed, move at a snail’s pace.

Dale, Duane, and I have been working on a new site design that should be launched soon, perhaps even later today. It is, in my opinion, the best design that we have come up with and is functionally outstanding.

I wish I could see the acoustic show. Unfortunately, school calls (actually, I’m not going to lie, I’m really happy to be going back).

This summer’s been pretty wonky for weather. Here in Ontario it’s been raining pretty much since June. Though I have to say, I’d much rather have rain than the normal mid-thirties temperature with crazy humidity. If you’re naked, with all the windows open, all the fans blowing, a cold cloth on your face, and it’s STILL too hot to sleep, what then? I’m happy autumn’s coming.

Just checked the weather forecast for our trip to see your shows.. The weather is going to be in the mid 70’s. I’m sure you will enjoy the cool weather for your outside show. Fall weather is just around the corner here. It was beautiful yesterday. Went outside and laid down under a tree on my lunch break.

Take yourself and your guitar and sit under a tree or go to the beach when the weather cools in the early evening. No pacing and looking at walls. Just some solitude and inspiration from nature in preparation for your outside concert.

I hope your not referring to your trip with you father?

Oh, I’m so sorry to hear that…sincerely….it was clear how much you were both looking forward to it. I do hope whatever the obstacle to the trip is, that is nothing serious. Disappointment is just one of the worst feelings ever. Please find something else to look forward to. Good luck on the weekend.

Sorry to hear your plans have changed - hope everything is OK.

Perhaps a local English pub that carries ArsenalTV will have to suffice?

I see from your show schedule you’ll be playing the Kee to Bala soon. When I was younger and lived in Muskoka we’d go to shows there by boat (Barney Bentall & the Legendary Hearts, 54-40, Waltons, Doug & The Slugs, KD Lang, Pursuit of Happiness) and my mother-in-law fondly remembers seeing Louis Armstrong there way back in the day. Drunk obnoxious weekend-warriors can be a pain in the ass there though.

This will cheer you up… (well, at least it cheers me up) I bought your book today. Not no cheapo ‘gently used’ copy either, I bought it brand spanking new from Indigo. I’m going to read it next week on my vacation at the cottage, which is turning out to be a total MG theme. It kicks-off with the Niagara and Bala shows. Then the rest of the week it’ll be me and your book (in between kayaking and naps) on the dock in the sunshine.

I’m remided of a classic Deep Thought by Jack Handy:

“Whenever you read a good book, it’s like the author is right there, in the room talking to you, which is why I don’t like to read good books.”

… but in this case I’d make an exception. I’ll be in Port Carling if you care to stop by and read me a chapter or two. :)

I’m so sorry to hear that your plans have fallen through for the fall. We see you this weekend in N-O-T-L and hopefully you will perhaps get a chance to relax a little Do a wine tour or two. It’s a very pretty area of Ontario. My husband and I actually honeymooned there as we were too broke, in those days, to take a major trip. I can’t count the number of times we’ve been. Anything you plan to play will suit us just fine. Cheers

Are you looking forward to this show more than other acoustic shows you’ve done in the past? I ask because of what appears to be an odd type of venue; is it really a cellar?

I’m curious how it will work with people eating while you play or will it be before/after? I have to admit it sounds cool. I only wish I had got ticekts before they sold out.

Sorry to hear about your plans for the trip. I hope they have just been altered and not cancelled.

    Cheers.

Hey, sorry about your plans with your dad; that really, really sucks.

I had a quick question for you, if you don’t mind: Are you signing autographs after the Club Infinity show this Friday?

Awww, I hope the trip being cancelled has nothing to do with your dads health.
And the heat, wow, not over here in Victoria. In my part of town we had a HUGE downpour for about an hour. It was rather refreshing.

I hope the heat doesn’t do more horrible things to your health. Or at least, make the things you randomly catch seem amply worse :(

Ps- You should totally break out some acoustic stuff in Bala. Can’t wait to see you perform!

Best of luck this weekend, you’ll make people smile just by showing up!!!

P.S. Are there actually any tickets left for Bala? Does anyone know? The website isn’t that informative only saying that you can’t get them online anymore…

Just wondering…. I could be persuaded to make that trip…

Thanks for the source of your new book! I was shopping today [a rare thing for me but it's my eldest daughter's 5th freaking birthday today and she's the sweetest girl ever... she melts my heart and is starting school for the first time in about a week UGH! [homeschooled last year]…I’m going to be a mess… sorry babbling…]

So I found myself in HMV asking for Matt Good’s book. Apparently they don’t carry it Matt! I’m not an internet shopper so I’m glad to hear that I can get it at Indigo aka Chapters. Actually, fyi, buying tickets for your show on June 9th has been my only internet shopping….

Sorry to hear that your plans to travel with your Dad have changed but I hopefully not cancelled?!?!

Playin “haven’t slept in years” for the upcoming shows perhaps?? Sounds like it’s somewhat appropiate right now.. (still the greatest MGB song).. Whats up with the heat out west? Is that causing your lack of sleep or just your mind restless? I’m into that Chamomile tea… with some honey in it.. knocks me the hell out.

It’s a good one Jenny- My copy backpacked through Europe with me for a year and was read almost to death (and has an unmistakable “well traveled” look to it) The fact that I had to lug that damn pack around for a year is a testament to how much fun the book is. No chance it wasn’t coming back to Canada with me.
Sorry to here about the plan Matt….. hope it’s just an edit and not a scratch.

It’s not in a cellar, the venue is a vineyard, but it’s outdoors on a stage. The dinners are before the show.

Sorry to hear about the plans for England.

Oh that’s awful! I’m so sorry to hear about the changed plans. I hope it all works out alright…

I have to add that when I moved last month I ended up living in my new apartment for about 2 weeks without my cats (on a horrible air mattress that makes me thankful for my bed) and as much as I missed having all my kitties with me…I enjoyed being able to stretch out on the bed and to have it all to myself. Sometimes it’s hard to share a pillow with a 25lb cat. I can imagine the dogs are just as “cuddly”.

Sorry to hear about the change in plans. I hope it’s something that could be re-arranged.

Meanwhile, I can understand enjoying some of that alone time without the dogs. When I get home I’ll be without the cats for a couple days as they’re being boarded and I won’t be able to pick them up until after Labor Day. Nice to sleep without getting walked all over by a cat.

Alone time…how wonderful it is…makes me think the below quote:

“I never found the companion that was so companionable as solitude. We are for the most part more lonely when we go abroad among men than when we stay in our chambers. ”
