Yes!

Bronchitis and the flu. No heat related illness, just the heat making it feel worse. So sayeth my doctor (whose office sink I unfortunately threw up in). So it’s the antibiotic train and sleep, or attempting to. I’ve got shows the week next so I’ve no choice but bed rest. This is the reality of having a disease that screws your immune system over – you just get sick all the time. And I fucking hate it.

Threw up, of necessity, in a sink on a BA flight. Not an illness of my own making, but regards, because that shit just won’t go down like you want it to.

Also hope the heat situation has improved.

12. Jaaquee Says:

Doctors told my mom for years that she had Bronchitis, then surprise surprise “oops - I guess that bronchitis was lung cancer all along”. They found the lump once it was the size of a tennis ball. Awesome.

Question the Doctors and asked to get checked for it. Especially since you’re a smoker and do mention symptoms of cancer sometimes.

Or don’t. I’m just saying.

13. TanyaS Says:

ah, a Disease? Am I missing something here? Can that interact with it? I have never heard that it physically interferes with your immune system. Which obviously is a concern because you push yourself too hard it seems…. and need to slow down, old man….. ha, i’m allowed to say that because I’m older than you. (:()

14. BruiseViolet Says:

Ugh…I went through most of my youth with chronic bronchitis. I had to sleep sitting up (against 4 or 5 pillows), live on brochodialators, antibiotics, steroid inhalers, cough suppressants and deal with countless allergies associated with anything living outside and exercise- induced asthma. I lived on antibiotics to fight tonsilitis and throat infections regularly.
NO doubt smoking never helped through out all of thus, but i digress.

I feel your pain Matthew, though I myself, never developed extreme nausea- I am sorry you are suffering, or extreme discomfort.. I know it has become a natural process in your life, but none- the- less, being that I know what is like not being able to breath, struggled throughout years of sleepless, cough filled, or painful nights– i would never wish any of it on my worst enemy.

I was fortunate to have had only very mild symptoms over the past couple of years. BEing that you have another lung condition on top of brochitis- i do not have to tell you what your smoking is doing , in additon to nearly permanently suppressing your already weakened immune system.

I’m not hear to tell you what to do, your decisions are your own- but you need to force yourself to make the better choice for your well being!!!
Best of Luck.

Lots of fluids, rest, breathing in heavy warm/hot vapor will help a bit. NO easy solution but to live through it and do things that ease the discomfort.
Best of luck.

15. nelly Says:

Could it be a little anxiety that makes you sick, subconciously. My Aunt used to always say that prosperity made me sick. Sean and I see you in N-O-T-L in 2 weeks, so please rest. I know that’s selfish but sometimes I just don’t care. Be well.

16. BruiseViolet Says:

You sound like my sister…She is always nauseated and is often sick (flu-y, headaches/ dizzy/ sore throats)

A doctor once misdiagnosed her with leukemia as a child, because of her constant weakened state..

I should get check into our doctor, while she is visiting.

17. nelly Says:

By the way, did you just see the German weightlifter that just poo-pooed the Russian guy?? Amazing. I can’t even imagine.

you will definately be cough and cold free! lol

19. sjay Says:

Get well, damn it.

20. Orangepekoe Says:

So bedrest, atb’s and quit-the-fuck-smoking for the bronchitis. Ooops, did I say that? I quit in Jan. after smoking for 20 years and since then, no bronchitis. I hate harping but it’s true. They’re not shitting us, quitting really helps!!

Take care of yourself!

21. Eva Says:

Get well soon, Mr. Good. A bunch of us will be seeing you in Buffalo. :)

22. Helen Says:

Here’s wishing you a speedy recovery!

And as others have said, the smoking can’t be helping. Not to sound all preachy but…you really need to quit that crap for your own good!

23. polarbear Says:

YES! #2 ?

Title of your next entry when you decide to quit smoking right?? I will always find a way to throw a jab in there when I can. Sorry, your stuck with me until you decide to boot me off.

Get well because my BF and I have a long road trip next week and two shows to attend.

Yes!! Two shows!! There’s another jab too, but for all of you guys out there. :)

24. Size Says:

I’m surprised your doctor didn’t say “Quit smoking and you wont get sick all the time”. Usually they try to be sly about it and say “well… if you didn’t smoke, that would help” in some way without sounding offensive.

25. mlvegas Says:

Well, at least you know what it is.
I’ve been feeling pretty crappy lately…..it takes a lot for me to call my doctor….so I finally did today…and he is
on vacation…..great.
Feel like I am losing my mind……
Wishing you good health and peaceful dreams……
Love from Buffalo

26. Abe Says:

Matt, I’m no stranger to bronchitis. Been getting it since I was a kid and just got over a case of it a few days ago, still not 100% but eh.

Take it easy and get well.

27. Angela Says:

At least you know what it is now….get better :)
And again…Last Parade is AMAZING!

28. Tony Shucraft Says:

Iam no stranger to being sick. Of course all the headaches, and whatnot have been less as of late. Especially after I decided that my meds were becoming more of a problem than a problem solver. Of course the reasons were for different reasons.

29. jnifer Says:

Bronchitis and the freakin flu. Good lord thats rough. Hope the antibiotics start working by tomorrow, and you are able to get some rest.

30. Monkey Says:

Glad to hear it’s all going to be okay.

31. ericz Says:

get better soon matt. and, not to be a pain in the *ss… but how about quitting smoking?…………………..

32. deb Says:

Damn, you’ve seen your fair share of illness lately, haven’t you? That really sucks….hope it takes its course quickly and you’re back on your feet again soon.

I’m one of those lucky ones who rarely gets sick (knocking on wood now)…I can’t imagine going through what you go through.

Take care and, as the mother in law says - “keep your pecker up”.

33. handles Says:

not to bemoan the point…but smoking can’t be helping you much.

you seriously need to quit.

tough love

34. Sebrina Says:

:(

feel better soon.

35. tina Says:

take care of yourself sweetheart

i hope for you a speedy recovery

36. Joseph M Says:

Flu = virus
Bronchitis: Latin (maybe greek) translation - inflammation of the bronchioles or bronchiole tubes

Neither one is a bacteria, hence, antibiotics are useless. (that is unless your cough is from a bacterial infection)

A common misconception is that the flu means throwing up. The true influenza virus is a respiratory infection. The symptoms being a cough, chills, body aches, and sweats. If you are throwing up, you have a gastrointestinal bug, could be a virus, or a bacteria but not the flu.

If you need to boost your immune system, here are some options:

1) Zinc. Many endurance athletes supplement with zinc to boost their immune system to ward off bugs when they are at that point where they are so close to overtrained that their immune system takes a dive.

2) Oil of Oregano. Tastes awful, burns going down, makes you smell italian (no offense intended) but will kill a lot of things trying to make a home in your body. Recently had a patient of mine have it prescribed to her by a naturopathic doctor after finding her apartment infested with mould.

3) Vitamin C. Lots of conflicting data on this one but taken in consistent low doses throughout the day as a potent anti-oxidant will help your body recover as it fights off stuff.

38. Anton Says:

How the hell do you keep catching these things?

Get well soon.

39. apple Says:

Haha, yeah, I’ve got the flu, in the sick boat too!! Cheers, mate.

40. apple Says:

PS At least it’s raining now (and colder), ‘cept when you have the flu it feels hot/cold all the time anyway, pfft!

41. AnnaStasia Says:

Well, exactly- at least it isn’t a heat related illness. Get lots of rest for next week because the dogs need you, we need you, and most importantly, you need you.

:D Feel better!!

42. andrea Says:

Matt,
What will it take for you to quit smoking? Your most valuable instrument…your voice.
The way in which you emote your lyrics is unmatched.
Your underlying condition…sarcoidosis of the lungs (I believe?!)
Why would you risk further damage?

You bear your soul on this site and as many can probably attest to….we, the fans, feel somehow as if we know you, as if you are a personal friend. In truth, you are as much a stranger to me as I am to you…but if I was a true friend and not some generic name I would ask the same question….

43. antisocialchick Says:

hope you’re able to get the rest you need
take care of yourself, man…

44. Deanne Says:

That you say “no choice but bed rest“is very telling Matt. Sounds like you`re a bit resistant to that idea. What`s wrong with self care and why do guys think the idea of that is wimpy. Your body is sending you a message, this time it`s a nudge, next time it might be a thump on the head. Slow down a bit. If I wasn`t off to Tofino on Friday I thought of posting on Craig`s List: Help Available for Matthew Good call 604 blah blah blah.
At least it`s raining, which tends to make for better sleeping. Hope you`re feeling better soon.
Sending you positive thoughts and feel good vibes. Deanne

45. Tuuli22 Says:

You should think about starting up your own research project on the invention of new types of antibiotics. As often as you need some, you soon might have developped resistance against all types that are out on the market by now ;)
But anyway, it’s always a good feeling to finally know what’s wrong - halfway to recovery.

46. Mark Mallett Says:

I feel your pain - still finishing up with exactly what you have and man it sucked ass.

And yeah I smoke too. I know I shouldn’t but there are reasons for everything.

So get better and do what you want. Life is full of choices - I choose to smoke rather than indulge in other more expensive addictions that could ruin my life faster.

Peace.

47. Kristen Says:

I hope you are feeling better very soon, Matt.

48. CreativeNige Says:

You rock stars. Always throwing up in people’s sinks.

49. angelboo Says:

50. laurabelle Says:

sorry to hear you’re not feeling well.

looking forward to buffalo and niagara, but more importantly, hope you are feeling better.

52. jenn Says:

Sent with the best of intentions…please look at my website! At the very least, it’s information! There are things you can do to help strengthen your immune system.

I wish you a quick recovery :-)

53. argarver Says:

I hope you get better real soon! You are in my thoughts!

Side note-I’ve learned that the Music Industry has lost one of the greatest sax players, LeRoi Moore of the Dave Matthews Band. May he R.I.P. and never be forgotten.

54. keith187 Says:

Best of Health and Luck Matt!!!

I heard that Bernie Mac had Sarcoidosis, he died recently of pneumonia complications.

55. KET Says:

Jeez, rough. Hope you’re currently getting some good rest. Hope the heat’s broken. Hope the dogs are being appropriately sympathetic and cuddly (and well-behaved). And hope you’ve got a freezer full of Freezies.

56. KateD Says:

Good to hear that the problem has been diagnosed and is being treated. Rest up and get well soon.

Three things:
1. You still need air conditioning. ;)
2. RIP, Bernie Mac. What a loss of a great talent.
3. It’s been five days since I’ve had a smoke. Thank God for the nicotine patch, but I still want to slap the snot out of somebody.

57. Matthew Good Says:

By disease I am referring to Sarcoidosis, which I have had since 1999. One of its affects is that it decreases the immune systems strength.

58. BruiseViolet Says:
………Take care and, as the mother in law says - “keep your pecker up”.
……….

if you don’t quit smoking, you might not be able to do that either….. *wink*

Bronchitis: Latin (maybe greek) translation - inflammation of the bronchioles or bronchiole tubes

Neither one is a bacteria, hence, antibiotics are useless. (that is unless your cough is from a bacterial infection)

Actually, many cases of bronchitis are from bacteria. I usually get it once a year, and almost always get prescribed erythromycin or azithromycin.

60. TanyaS Says:

I fully completely had no idea that you have Sarcoidosis. I’ve been awake sleeping for 5 years, I’m realizing.

Get well and please stop smoking, it’s icky.

61. polarbear Says:

Matt, you need to a new t-shirt.

Duane: right about the antibiotics. The ones you mentioned are actually the more expensive ones that are often used to treat symptoms that have not responded to other lesser antibiotics, such as amoxicillin and doxycyclin.

Acute bronchitis can sometimes result from a viral infection, and people who smoke or suffer from chronic bronchitis are highly succeseptible to bacterial infections. In that, I am not sure which comes first- the chicken or the egg. Not sure whether bacteria actually CAUSES bronchitis or just exaggerates and perpetuates the already existing symptoms of the bronchitis itself. I am sure some forms of bacteria can bring on a bout of acute bronchitis, but not chronic.

In my case, bacteria did not cause my bronchitis. Environmental factors, and my asthma did, as I had always suffered from inflammation of the bronchioles. As a result of having such a condition, I was often plagued by bacterial infections, because i was not able to rid the mucus in my lungs. I also had frequent bouts of strep and tonsilitis, which just increased my chances of bacterial infection exponentially.

Those infections were also harder to get rid off, often taking several round of antibiotics before they were remedied, if only temporarily (probably because i continued to play sports hard, and smoked).

I often had bacterial infections which would clear after one to several round of the said antibiotics you mentioned.

63. BruiseViolet Says:

spell check would be cool!

64. livewire Says:

Yuck, excessive heat makes any illness worse. Truly do hope you feel better soon. I mean, I’m sure you’d completely rock the ’surgical mask’ look for your upcoming shows but some may say that is taking the Hospital Music theme too far.

Take your meds and rest: your immune system will comply to the best of it’s ability. Be well.

65. jenn Says:

Alright, assuming you have no interest in checking out my website I’ll say this: you are what you eat. If that’s true, then eat nutrient dense foods for high antioxidants which help your immune system. That would also apply to smoking, what goes in, must come out…the illness.

Best of Health

66. TanyaS Says:

Anyone try shaking your hand yet? Feel sorry for whoever gets punched in the face for trying to. tee hee.

67. jennybean Says:

I hear ya Matt. I don’t think anyone really understands chronic illness unless they have one. Even I don’t understand it completely, but I watch my husband deal with his Crohn’s and the havoc it puts on his body and mind. He gets so sick of being sick and there is nothing he can do about it. What’s worse is he has a spot of Cancer in his chest now from the countless ct scans and x rays he’s had over the years. So now he has the 5000 pound man sitting on his chest all the time, while the usual Crohn’s torment takes care of the rest of him. Most people just don’t understand because its just so distant from the happy little lives that they live.

The first time in a long time that he actually felt good was on his birthday. I didn’t know what to get him since he was so sick he couldn’t do much. So I bought him an all day package at a spa. While I was thinking it was such a girlie present- he came back and said it was the best present ever.

Now, I don’t think you are “rich”, but you may be one of the lucky ones able to book yourself in once a week, for half an hour or all day if you have time.

68. jenn Says:

Okay, I realise I’m going on here but I have to……

I’ve had clients come back and tell me:
a) their cholestrol levels returned to normal;
b) they’re no longer taking HRT drugs for menopause;
c) their colitis is a non issue;
d) their blood pressure returned to normal levels;
e) they feel overall healthier!

These are REAL PEOPLE coming and telling me the effects they’ve experienced after taking the supplement that I have been taking for 10 years now ~ and nothing else.

Bottom line ~ EAT NUTRIENT DENSE FOODS ~ chronic illness or not, it will have a positive impact on your overall heath!

Sent with much care….

69. Beautiful101 Says:

Selfishly hoping that you will be well for the concert in Muskoka.
For a man who eats nutrition bars, and drinks vitamin water…….I suspect you do not have a tin of dry mustard in the house. But if you did, you might mix it with equal parts water and flour and then put the paste on your chest. I also suspect it will smell awful - even to the dogs. If you have sensitve skin don’t bother.

70. Liss Says:

awww Matt :S
feel better dude!

71. Emma-Babe Says:

Auto-immune diseases are tough. Are you taking anything for it?
Hope you feel better soon!!
