Saturday Night Awesomeness
October 18, 2008, Matthew Good I got a new Macbook Pro in July. What does that mean? It means, of course, that a brand new super awesome version of it has been released three months later! Mind you, I’m in no position to complain given what I paid for mine.
Speaking of super awesome, maybe your desktop should be.
If you happen to be a billionaire, you might want to get your ass to Germany. There’s a fair going on that you might not want to miss.
A lot of people have contacted me lately about the Daniel Johnston documentary The Devil And Daniel Johnston given that I have posted photographs of Johnston paraphernalia in my house and that I covered one of his songs on my last record. I purchased the DVD the week that it was released, so have owned it for some time now, but thought I would mention for those of you that haven’t checked out the special features that there is a special segment in which Daniel meets Laurie Allen, his life long love and muse, for the first time in 26 years. It’s very moving and certainly worth watching. Obviously, given his struggles with mental illness, I feel a special connection with Daniel’s work. He is, in many ways, an idol of mine. And while many people, and understandably so, don’t ‘get’ his music, I urge everyone to watch the film and then delve into his material. I think you’ll find you have a greater appreciation for it having been exposed to his story.
I was going to go and see W. tonight but am too under the weather. That said, the film’s star, Josh Brolin, is hosting SNL tonight and there are rumors that Sarah Palin will also be there. Anyway, here’s a few SNL clips to hold you over…
Updated:
Palin opens SNL (Baldwin is awesome)…
This little symbol lets you @ another comment

I also bought a Macbook Pro in July and seeing the new ones briefly made me reach for the old credit card…
Well, given what I paid for mine in July (£1100) I too am pleased. New MBPro arrives at work next week, so I’ll get to play with that at least. Did you hear Jobsy’s dribblings about the glass trackpad? Hilarious.
“The Devil and..” is an amazing piece of work, agreed.
Oh, and I had to cancel my ticket to the German Fair as it clashes with the race ;o)
The first SNL clip was so-so, but I greatly enjoyed the second one. I keep meaning to start watching that show, but it just never seems to happen.
I want a Macbook, but I decided to go on a cruise (read: glorified Canadian summer concert festival) this winter, so it’s going to be quite sometime before I’m going to be able to afford such a beautiful product.
Not that I really have the right to complain though. The only thing wrong with this PC laptop I bought three years ago is the amount of wear and tare it’s accumulated. :)
Sarah Palin’s appearance was okay. I don’t know what I expected but I thought would be better.
I want a Mac so much. But alas, I’m still tapping away on this silly Dell.
I began listening to Daniel Johnston’s music just over a year ago. Since then I have acquired his entire (or pretty damn close - he released so much) discography as well as the brilliant documentary. My wife doesn’t get him. She’s quite astonished that I’m able to listen to him. But I am. And I love it. As cliched as it may sound his music is the “purest” I’ve ever heard. Those old recordings of him in his room, singing about Laurie, they’re magical in their sadness.
I think it’s awesome how often you managed to use the word awesome in this post. My favorite character out of all three of these is the Crazy McCain Lady. I thought she was awesome.
BTW I ordered the Daniel Johnston documentary tonight. Looking forward to watching it in 5 to 7 business days.
As for “get your ass to Germany”, what must be missing in someones life in order to create the need to be so excessive?
Matt, instead of W., you should perhaps (or also) be aiming towards going to see Passchendale.
I saw W. last night and I was disappointed. The funniest scenes were the ones shown on commercials. Half way through the film, my friend turned to me and said “we should have seen Religulous.”
I’ve been meaning to get a MB Pro for a while now, and my procrastination has paid off for the first time in my life; I’m ordering a new one this week. Cause, you know, my investments are doing so well that I have so much extra cash to spend on frivolous technology. :/
Not surprisingly, they didn’t have Palin do a helluva lot. (Did you see her on Weekend Update as well? She did nothing, but Amy Poehler was hilarious… “When I say Obama, you say Ayers! Obama–Ayers! Obama–Ayers!”) I was hoping for her to come out and impersonate Tina Fey. Guess that would have been asking too much, comedically.
I also bought a new MBP over the summer, but I’m not all that disappointed about having not waited. I’m not really a fan of the new black bordering, and I’m really disappointed there’s not matte screen option. Really the only thing that impresses me is the trackpad.
Thanks Matt for the recommendation for the desktop, the site where its located has some of the best images I’ve seen. I have been looking for a good site with widescreen desktops for awhile.
Matt,
Don’t tell me you are a HIMYM fan! It is one of my Girlfriend and my favorite shows.
Have you seen the Robin Sparkles Video?

It’s kinda making fun of Alannis Morrissettes early career as a Canadian Pop Star.
We just started watching Season 3 and so far it has been Legen - wait for it , and I hope you’re not lactose intolerant because the next word is - dary!!

Barney Stinson is a suit-able role model.
Lame pun five!
If your a HIMYM fan then you should check out Barney’s book called “The Bro Code”.
I have season 1 & 2 but not 3 yet. Working on Dexter season 2 right now so HIMYM will have to wait.
Have you ever seen the skit where a character plays Mark Walberg talking to animals? Well, Mark was on the show for a minute last night and was being “interviewed and then excuses himself to speak to someone else.
He turns, bends down and engages in “conversation” with a donkey.
“Hello Donkey. You live in barn don’t you?”… “Say hi to your mother for me..”
~ Palin sucked on SNL, but most of the skits on Sat. were sub-par.
~ The Devil and Daniel Johnston was pretty amazing to watch. I think the people who don’t “get” his music, is because they can’t imagine the thought process that he goes through in creating his work. His lyrics and such may seem very simple, but the way he puts things together is very unique! Recording, and re recording all his work onto individual cassette tapes, complete with art work for each. Now that is time consumig, hard work!
A little creative genius, trapped inside a tormented vessel. What blew me away was his very aggressive and sometimes violent tendencies.
Anyway, great doc…my two cents worth.
I soooooo badly wanted Baldwin to say that he was moving to Canada if McCain/Palin won! Was also hoping for a Fey/Palin debate!!!!!
That was some good stuff.
It’s a good thing SNL has the elections to plunder for material, because everything else has been really weak this season. Even Andy Samberg seems to be stuck in a rut now… And God, Sarah Palin was a waste of time- Even McCain was able to generate some real laughs when he appeared.
HIMYM has really grown on me over the past year and I’m sorry I didn’t discover it until the third season… I love the fact that NPH has shed the child actor curse and has really seemed to settle down into a comfortable role being awesome- do we really have Harold & Kumar to thank for that? I also like that all the some of the characters, like Robin’s as the sometimes Token Canadian always seems to be infused with a lot of subtle references that you have to know Canadians to get, which says a lot when you’re living in Texas like I am. (Of course, the actress who plays Robin IS from BC, so it’s really not a stretch.)
Matt, thanks for the link to the wallpaper site- having just purchased a widescreen, it’s nice to find a site with a great selection that doesn’t make me scroll through life-sized versions of internet bimbos at work to find cool papers.
I got a MacBook pro in… April or May, something like that, so I too am kinda bummed that a new one just came out, considering I paid full price for mine.
I was first exposed to Daniel Johnston’s music because of Matt, and while I haven’t dabbled too much into it, The Devil and Daniel Johnston is a fantastic film and everyone should watch it. Multiple times.
Well Matt, if it makes you feel any better I just got a new iMac yesterday and already I’m hearing rumors up updates coming next month. Go figure. I’m glad I missed Sarah Palin on SNL, I can’t imagine she did that good of a job. She’s more enjoyable to watch when she’s looking incompetent during an interview without a script.
