Stupidity Abounds

Space October 22, 2008, Matthew Good

The Pitt River Bridge was closed this morning for two and a half hours after a bomb threat was made to 911. The threat turned out to be a false and the bridge was reopened. Thus, reports that an al-Qaeda sleeper cell may be operating in the greater Pitt Meadows area are obviously false. No word yet on whether a mob has gathered at Roosters Country Cabaret with torches and a rope intent on looking for foreigners.

Some hours early, in Fernie BC, a 19-year-old kid somehow shot himself in the head with a crossbow. No details have been released other than he was flown to Calgary to have the bolt removed. Was alcohol a factor? I’m going to say yes given that the incident occurred during a party at the boy’s home. Either that or he thought he was Ted Nugent and mistook himself for a bear.

Too bad about the guy with the crossbow… he must have been off his head (har). Those things are serious weapons. Oh well, the harsher side of me thinks of ‘Darwin’. Maybe he was in a fuelled state of hurt or depression. Gotta love the speculation.

Anyhoo, besides the classic crank calls, a major stupid fad (my opinion) going on now is the pointing of high-powered hand lasers at commercial airplane cockpits during takeoff/landing. But maybe it wasn’t a crank call. Maybe somebody saw ’someone of suspicion’ in the early hours walking across the bridge, keeping to himself, and wearing (gasp) a jacket. Gotta love the fear.

    I thought it was a joke….it’s not.
Maybe the guy was listening to Ted Nugent’s music when he ‘bowed’ himself in the head.

I didn’t know Ted Nugent was such an asshole, but a quick wikipedia reference quickly elucidated that there is more to ol’ Ted than shitty music.

I saw Ted Nugent in person shoot a crossbow at Sudam’s head at a concert many moons ago. What’s up with him and his crossbow’s?

Ted is a hunter. He sometimes uses a bow to hunt; but not a crossbow. I’m sure that shooting at Saddam’s Head was just part of Ted’s show.

And Casey; usually there is more to all of us than shitty music.. : )

I once ran over my own leg with my bike while I was riding it. And I managed to keep going, too. Somehow.

Now I don’t feel so stupid for ending up with a tire track scar wrapped around my leg.

    Thanks :D

The Nuge totes rocks a crossbow brah I saw the bear and the bow he got it with this fall.

Knowing drunk he probably just wanted to take a look at what the tip of the arrow would look like to the animal and then fyhew. I figure no one laughs when emo kids accidentally hurt themselves bad so why laugh if a hunter does.

I think the stupidity hurt me more to read then it did the kid with a bow in his head. Like I can see accidently shooting someone else in the head, but himself? How do you even hold a crossbow like that!?

Yet another proof that anything is possible. When I was 12, I sewed through my index finger (through half of my finger nail too) while using sewing machine. It was curious to see neat blue stitches…

I hope he doesn’t suffer any brain damage.

Crossbows are more controlled than guns in many cases because they will pierce kevlar and many other armors. Sucks to be him. Controlling firearms is one thing, but you can never truly control or contain human stupidity. Einstein once said “there are two things that are infinite, the universe and human stupidity, and I’m not sure about the universe”.

I saw the same concert in Charlotte, N.C. a couple of years ago. He was opening for ZZ Top. After he shot the bow he then came to the mic and stated, “If you don’t believe in this God damn war get your liberal ass out of this country” I was “wow” and laughed at him and thought he’d want my foriegn ass out of this country!

But man, the guys song ‘numb’? was incredible!

Latest update is that alcohol was a contributing factor. No kidding. I stapled myself in the knee once. I was 8 and absent-mindedly doing crafts at the top of the stairs so I could hear my parents’ party downstairs. Alcohol was not a factor.

Ted Nugent has the magical ability to raise my blood pressure just by seeing his name. I’m pretty convinced he is actually my embodiment in Bizarro World.

You guys are all insensitive. This poor kid, all alone in his room with his crossbow, listening to ethereal ocean sounds and Pachebel;s Canon & Gigue, noboby to hang out with with, and he wants to play a little William Tell Solitaire, and he has a perfectly normal accident - could have happened to anyone of us. C’mon people - have a heart. One bolt through his forehead and he’s never going to hear the end of it.

Michael Eh. HA HA HA. I’m so obviously way older than you. The concert I was at was in 1991 and it was him opening for Bad Company. ahahhaha seriously… and it was in regards to the Gulf war

TLS does Nugent always get on about liberals at his concerts?…

I think the man has spent too much time in the back woods hunting, eating raw venison and as result has lost touch with reality.

Too be honest that night I got my money’s worth before he came out and played as Kenny Wayne Shepard opened with Stevies Ray Vaughans ‘Double Trouble’ backing him up. I had the chance to see Stevie years ago when I was in college but I didn’t go because I did not have the $$$…I’ve always regretted that!

As I know the person who’s nephew is the boy who shot himself, I wish to extend my sympathies to the family. I understand that taking it from an outside perspective it is easy to chuckle at this news. However, this completely changes when this is your family. It was a most unfortunate accident and a tragedy to the family. I understand that no one hear wishes ill thoughts towards that family, but this may be an opportune time to remind us that everyone makes mistakes. Although some of them maybe humorous, death is always tragic.
