Appalling. How easy it is to [hide behind and] blame the machine. I don’t know what’s worse; being bullied and coerced into voting against your wishes [Mugabe style] or being conned through the back door like this…

Thankfully, we still count the old fashioned way; for sure, there is margin for error – but not for cheating.

I vaguely recall seeing some along the lines of these interviews a few years back, when the Florida fiasco first kicked off. I would normally say, ’so what, doesn’t affect me’ [my Country] but now, I am not so sure…

Has this entire compilation only just come to light? If so, then sweet – someone out there has impeccable timing.

This is crazy !! Very scary and hard to believe. I mean, it’s not completely hard to believe that the white, rich population have more voting machines and a better chance at getting to vote or that elections are being rigged by the government but it is quite terrifying. It’s also amazing that this woman risked a lot to show this to the people, good for her! Too bad it most likely won’t change anything.

anyone else catch the guy saying ” basically you are making a molehill out of a mountain” hahaha (44:25)

Am I the only person that can’t figure out how to quote people on here anymore? I no longer see the quote button next to posts, and when I used the bquote button, I just quote myself. Don’t get me wrong, I LOVE quoting myself because I’m pretty awesome, but occasionally I like to quote others for equality’s sake.

you are not alone my friend- we appear to all be fucktards when it comes to the quote button. Matt- are we all “quote challenged” or is it broken?????

    Thanks Matt,

Now I wish my Fourth Year Design Project team did the voting machine idea instead of the LED light bulb (regular A19 socket, 1/2 power of incandescent but lasts 50 000 hrs - 100 000 hrs depending on cooling of LED’s).

We would have made that sucker super secure, no hacking. Do you know that security software is not kept secret? Algorithms are published! Yes, code is secret, but algorithms are published and peer reviewed. RC2 code was posted on the net, just 40-bit encryption, and it was later decided that all algorithms would be made public. That way they can be designed to be so computationally intensive they can’t be hacked except by brute force and if you use anything above AES 128, you’ll be hacking for a very long time. Top secret is 192 - 256 bit.

So why the hell they are not encrypting all data and using an app on the memory card to perform a key-exchange much like WPA2 (yeah, you’ll need an authentication server) and then encrypted data is tunneled, securely, to the HDD, remaining encrypted. Add to that, your voting machine could use an MD5 hash and store the data package hash key on the machine which can later be used for comparison with the data on the card.

What this means is a solid way such that your counting algorithm (which I can’t see being all that complex compared to say WiFi and the OSI model for networking) can function and you’ll know if the data is played with. The code itself can be encrypted, special backups can be placed on chips on the board and most of all, have all pieces manufactured in different countries by different companies. No one knows what the hell they are making.

Now you have a system that is far less likely to be tampered with during election times. Each sub system is designed to be sure and with a specific function, generic, so no sub system vendor knows what they are a part of.

Damn, that could have been a really cool project! Oh well, at least we can light up our lives with our chosen project. “My project’s so bright, I gotta wear shades.”

    Cheers!

I read up on this stuff as it was happening on bradblog - Diebold is evil. They now allow voting ahead of time here in OH and other states. Not sure if it matters, I don’t know when they are counted. If it’s when you turn in your absentee ballot, or the night of the election…so it’s possible this may and probably will happen again. I really can’t watch this - it’s making my stomach turn again thinking about it.

  22. Nothingman Says:

Wow, I REALLY took this conversation on a tangent haha.

Satch I don’t understand word one of what you said above lol. Your one smart cookie though, it would seem. It is obvious that the powerful entities within our country have achieved a status whereby they cannot be stopped. Even in this documentary, she found clear cut evidence, but it didn’t stop diebold from winning in the end.

  24. MPalazzo Says:

Why isn’t the software secure? Because then you can’t tamper with the votes.
Looks like some people are working very hard to keep vote tampering easy.

For a few seconds I felt like the effort to understand politics and researching candidates is irrelevant but then it made me want to work harder at making sure my vote counts.

These things are allowed to happen because most people are content with half assed explanations and obvious lies.

I’m sorry work to elevate but Ohio’s state law constitutes advanced voting. It has nothing to do with the voting companies involved in the state elections. On a positive note they have had a record turn out for advanced voting, roughly 10x the amount they normally get.
Unfortunately I found this documentary very misguiding. I’ve worked on some of these machines here in Vancouver which is where most of the programming is done and although security issues always exist just like with bank systems (anything can be hacked given a copious amount of time), there are many independent agencies, state governments, and other individuals which check over these systems and approve these processes through a government mandated certification process.. Essentially to rig the tally on one of these individual machines you would have to have the cooperation of multiple organizations who test functionality of the software used in riding elections. Also, memory cards should not be able to be to reprogram the machines during an election without security markers being triggered or a riding election official personally tampering with the voting machine (also difficult to do). What I find astounding is how ES&S, the largest electronic election company in the U.S. hasn’t been widely publicly criticized as well for bribery and other unmoral practices which some of their employees have gone to jail for as a scapegoat for the company, I think this sort of practice should be getting more attention in order to safeguard elections.

I take the view that the US was never a very good democracy (except relatively, which it was by the standards of the late 18th century). By the mid-19th century the system was in decay already and by the mid-20th it had lost all credibility. Now it’s just ridiculous, I’m amazed there hasn’t been some kind of popular movement (partisan or otherwise) to get voting methods fixed. On every level there are incredible structural deficiencies and then you have the above issues with counting and so on. It is very clear that this is not a democracy any more, although I’m surprised that’s news to some people.

A really great blog on election and other technology usage issues is “Freedom To Tinker” from Princeton’s Center for Information Technology Policy. The blog has been tracking (and at times very actively participating in) efforts to improve the accuracy of electronic voting. For a really scary view of just how screwed up it is, search for the blog (in the archives) regarding the key. Incredibly depressing, but also reassuring that such smart people are trying to make it better.
