Whistle While You Work

Posted by Matthew Good on July 31, 2009

You wake up, stretch, wander downstairs and get some coffee. The sun is shinning, the birds are singing, the F-22 program is slated for termination. You gulp down some wonderful caffeine named after a hockey player, discover that, not surprisingly, civilian deaths in Afghanistan are on the rise, the contradiction that is Israel continues to defend their invasion of Gaza – as if it matters anymore, as if anyone’s going to actually ever do anything about it. You turn on a fan, cool air and summer warmth combine and wash over your face and shoulders, Hillary Clinton’s threat to refuse to share intelligence with the Brits if they dare disclose evidence of the use of torture in the case of Binyam Mohamed plays nicely with the sound of a power saw echoing through the neighbourhood. As it grinds to a halt, relative silence returns, the sound of the fan humming softly in the background. And so the sun charts its course through the sky on this final day of July, the deadliest month in Afghanistan since the country was invaded in 2001.
