Matthew Good Must Be Stopped

In my profession you always run the risk of something occurring when you’re active online, especially if you use social networking applications. Today I received a telephone call from a friend who said that they received an anonymous email regarding my personal life, and for the life of them couldn’t figure out how their email address was attained. So I asked them – ‘is it visible on your Facebook or Flickr pages?’

The hard, cold reality is that there are people out there that aren’t fond of me, for whatever reason, and can find the emails of fans by simply going to my Flickr page, viewing my contacts, and looking to see if their email is available on their profile page. The same thing goes for the official Facebook page, Myspace page, and so forth – though in the case of the Facebook page I have had the profile altered so that non-friends can no longer view the friend’s list. That said; it’s quite an easy thing to do, and quite an easy way for those looking to cause trouble to find the email addresses of complete strangers.

Of course, this leaves me with two options. The first is to simply ignore the ravings of those that would spend their time defaming me, which is usually the best policy in my line of work, though as much cannot be said for how complete strangers will process such information when they are contacted anonymously. The second is to do away with my accounts to safeguard my privacy and personal life, which is something that I will not be forced to do because of the actions of individuals with nothing better to do with their time.

Defamation and slander are very real, and very serious, aspects of hearsay. To enter into the spreading of information that is without grounds, or the unwillingness to confront the party being defamed, is a slippery slope, and one that can end very badly for those that have chosen to do it.

All of that said, I have a contact email on this website. If you have a grievance, I suggest that you use it rather than entering into the process of cowardly spreading nefarious ‘information’ to complete strangers. Because if it continues, and damage is done to my professional reputation because of it, action will ultimately be taken.

That’s beyond moronic, it’s moroniffic. What the hell is going through these people’s minds? Are we in grade 2?

I suggest the ignoring of moroniffic people, however, I can see how someone in your position would have to be that much more careful and take the matter seriously. And, it may come to that, which would be completely warranted, in my opinion.

It’s amazing how many people suddenly grow a set of balls from the safety of their computer chair.

  3. Patrick Pitt Says:

    i can’t stand you.

this is all just a clever act of subterfuge.

i’m using you to get close enough to tony pierce to give him a well deserved - and well placed - kick in the junk for an excessive amount of Fergie content on the busblog.

  4. Stephen Says:

Completely off topic, I found a video review on youtube of the new iPod touch, and Hospital Music shows up when they look at the cover flow.

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5oSsnSKdj_0

But back on topic. It’s really sad that people feel need to exploit the fact you make your email public, and on top of that, they harass others.

  5. Calvin Says:

So that being said, are you still thinking about the shirt idea: “I hear Matt Good’s STILL an Asshole”?

Look, I think that anyone that may have a reason to justify Matthew Good’s wrongs must first leap over his compassion for Human Rights and being a civilized person. Furthermore, ANY FAN must remember they are a fan originated from his music and not his persona.

So go ahead Matt, be an asshole for all I care, its the things you write about and the music you make that make me a fan.

  6. SariBari Says:

so now that this has happened can you finally make the renowned “fuck the haterz” song replete with coke- fueled, shitty, europop beats? gwen stefani and some swedes could produce.

  7. D. Lilly Says:

The only grievance I’ll have is if there are no XXL t shirts at the merch stand on the 20th.I’m fed up with the predjudice against the middle-aged obese of the world. I want my damn t shirt!!!!

  8. yakerav Says:

must be stressfull.if people focused their energy on what they love instead of on what they dislike and fear, wed be in much better shape.
even if someone disagrees(which should be a constructive thing),
id think theyd see the amount of work and good intention(i thank you for it).
    wish you(and yours) peace.*.

i hate when people say shit about me. i’ve heard it all:

    “oh patrick lasts too long:”

    “patrick IS too long.”

“patrick is hard like christmas candy.”

“patrick makes stoney curtis look like a raisin”

“patrick spent more time with my 3 girlfriends then he did on me.”

none of that is slander - it’s all true - but the truth hurts.

i cry myself to sleep sometimes.

fuck these punks. anyone worth two squirts of piss knows it’s bike racks at 3 or get on with yourself. (they’re piss, not mine…one squirt of my piss is worth 2 ounces of platinum and and is used to kill vampires and werewolves.)

that was WAY too brilliant…thanks for the laugh ;)

but on what matt was saying… attacking people’s fans/friends with an anonymous email…how much more cowardly can you get?!?!

  14. alan Says:

The ironic thing is, had you decided to take on the career of gangster rapper, carry around a bunch of guns and pimp out a massive posse of thugs, singing only about bitches and ho’s and your cocaine nose, you’d probably wind up being deemed a more socially acceptable musician to more people. Because as we all already know by now, keepin’ it real and packin’ a nine is far more upstanding and responsible than promoting public debate and political discourse.

It’s your own fault for being such an asshole Matt. Just play your guitar and smile for the camera.

  15. Stephen K Says:

I think a lot of it has to do with your social activism. Being a celebrity means people are aware of you in the first place, but as you’ve said before, some people just want you to “shut up and sing.” I’m an activist as well, and I would like to think that even if I had the celebrity you have, it wouldn’t stop me. I hope it wouldn’t, anyway.

  16. tristan_lo Says:

some people just find amusement and fun to send cruel things to people online. They are looking for a reaction. It’s just like when playing on xbox live. You get twelve year olds threating to kick your ass or come rape your little sister. They do it because…
    1.)They can
2.)You don’t know who they are
3.)They know they won’t have to face you and can get away.
All in all the enemies you have, show you things about yourself you need to change/ know your way better then them. so your enemies here on earth are just friends in reverse.

  20. Justin Says:

I can second the fact that Pat is hard like candy….Just don’t ask how…

  21. mercy-severity Says:

It’s ridiculous that in making yourself so accessible to your fans (which is pretty awesome, by the way) you have to deal with cocky bastards who abuse the anonymity of the internet.
Things like this make me more sure of my belief in “I Hate People.”

But I think “Matthew Good Must Be Stopped” would be good on a t-shirt. I might do that for the show on the 20th.

Hopefully these idiots don’t outweigh the people who love you and your music. I’m sure we could take them, after all, they don’t sound too smart.

  22. SariBari Says:

    Seconded.

  23. Duane Storey Says:

Yeah that sucks. You’d think people would have more important things to do with their time then make crap up and spread it around.

  24. gorram_feds Says:

I completely agree that such inconsiderate behaviour is troubling and likely already tumbling down the slippery slope into the territory of defamation and slander. My strong concerns about the lack of personal privacy are my primary reasons for staying the hell away from MySpace and Facebook (that, plus both my phone and email machines are still running just fine).
I am curious about something though, Matt - and if you would rather not answer here (or at all) that is fine. I imagine that the time, effort and money involved to prove that your slander and/or defamation by an anonymous person has in fact caused damage to your professional reputation are considerable and likely deter many people from actively pursuing whatever recourse is due. As well, I figure that being able to actually track down such an anonymous defamer/slanderer and prove that they are in fact the ones spreading the lies and causing the damage can vary considerably from ‘rather easy’ to ‘nigh impossible.’
I mention these things not to put you down or suggest that the struggle is never-ending or not worth fighting (although it may often seem to be) - on the contrary I quite admire your steadfast bravery to not give in and to continue to speak your mind. Understanding that slander and defamation *are* offenses, realistically I still have to ask: what sort of action can ultimately be taken in situations like this?

  25. bc_boy Says:

Matt - it seems that over the years this has been a prevailing and constant evil, the attacks when you make yourself available. I’ve always admired you for doing so, even though you seem to need to ‘reinvent’ your online contact-able self to keep avoiding such BS. But it’s not lost on the majority.
