US Army active duty suicides were up in 2007, according to Pentagon officials, surpassing the number of suicides in 2006, reaching 108. And to think that not too long ago there were actual discussions taking place at to the merits of post-traumatic stress disorder. One truly unfortunate aspect of this news is that a quarter of those that took their own lives did so while in Iraq.
While on the subject of Iraq, many of you are probably aware that former Press Secretary Scott McClellan’s new ...More »

I came across this newspaper article yesterday, so I thought I would share it.
Four Lebanese university students have been jailed for a week for making crude remarks on the Facebook social networking site about the singing talents of a woman they met at a party, media reports said on Thursday.
Local newspapers reported that the students -- all male -- were ordered to be detained on January 10 after the young woman's father objected to the authorities in the eastern town of Zahle.
The four were charged ...More »

It'll be a long warm stretch of weather here in the great city of Toronto. If you're like me this isn't a hangover post because of the mid-week festivities - so I hope I can capture your attention for at least a few paragraphs.
Nobody asked me - but when did blame become a major part of the Canadian tactic in foreign policy?
You know what Canada is beginning to remind me of - George Foreman after his loss to Ali in the Rumble In The Jungle.

... to pay more attention to my breath. Breath is life they say, and we all do a lot of breathing. Sometimes I catch myself holding it, sometimes I'm keeping it shallow, and all too rarely I let myself breathe deeply. The correlation between stress, relaxation and the way we breathe are well documented. I will attempt to direct some awareness towards that because I know given my situation, it could be a good thing, Martha.
... to choose a day in which I remind every ...More »

Everyone does year-end reviews. Film, music, literature, even global events make top-ten lists of the year’s best-of (or ‘impacting’ as it applies to global happenings). When it comes to the arts, I find year-end best-of lists utterly pointless. When it comes to music specifically, if a record stands the test of time and, ten years from now, is still as appreciated, then it was worth the mention given it. Unfortunately, too many year-end best-of lists are jammed packed full of records that, even ...More »

There used to be a time when my grandparents grew beets, potatoes, cabbage, lettuce, rhubarb, grapes, cucumbers, and beans in their backyard. They passed when I was in my teens, but I’ve never forgotten how superior it was to eat vegetables freshly picked and cooked.
Being that he came from another era altogether, my grandfather’s reliance on heavy fertilizers was non-existent. In fact, for the most part, he used compost and other common additives to enrich and protect the soil. He also weeded by hand ...More »
