There is no greater tradition in sports than the FA Cup. No other competition of such prestigious history exists that allows teams from all divisions of play to compete against each other in an attempt to covet the sport’s oldest prize. The FA Cup brought us the term ‘giant killer’, employed to denote the defeat of top-flight clubs by those of significantly less notoriety. This year’s final represents that tradition, as it will feature Portsmouth and Cardiff, the latter of which hasn’t appeared in the ...More »

I came across this story by way of Sean Orr at Beyond Robson. It is, as an individual that suffers from mental illness and is a born and bred Vancouverite, one of the most disgusting things about residents of this city that I have ever read… “Neighbours opposed to the establishment of the Motivation, Power and Achievement Society's mental health drop-in centre at West Seventh and Fir say they will help the city find a different location for the social services agency. But they don't want it ...More »

It’s been a deadly few days here in the Lower Mainland. First, a pre-wedding party of 25 to 30 people in the valley was struck by a truck while walking down Lefeuvre Road in Abbotsford at around 11 PM, killing 6 people and injuring a further 17. The driver of the truck, a 71 year old male, was not under the influence of alcohol or drugs according to authorities. The group was walking along the shoulder of the road and was due to attend a ...More »

While the temperature skyrockets in Vancouver, according to The Weather Network it’s currently 33 degrees in the Valley and 28 degrees downtown at 10:30 am, BC Hydro has issued a warning to residents in the city’s core to decrease the use of air conditioners because of the recent failure of one of two transformers. Unlike other parts of the country, primarily the East, Vancouver dwellings do not come standard with air conditioning. In fact, in many cases, newer high rises have windows that, while floor ...More »

This morning I had a telephone conversation in which I was made to feel that I was crazy. After it concluded I was left with a very empty feeling inside, even though the person on the other end of the phone doesn’t really known me anymore. There is a disconnect in our society between the perception of maturity and actual maturity, one that, as I get older, I begin to recognize more and more. Rod and I were talking last night about people’s character and ...More »

I went to bed early last night, around nine. My internet has been complete crap lately, and it’s made me unbearable (it has to be Shaw too, because my Airport seems fine). Isn’t that ridiculous, that a snail-like connection speed can affect a person to such an extent that they’re unbearable? The truth is, and I’ll not lie, the net is probably my best friend. And when it’s not reliable, it really pisses me off. So I went to bed at nine. I was tired ...More »

Some years ago I asked a rather inebriated crowd at a large festival in Edmonton to go and rip down one of those giant inflatable beer cans. No less than five minutes later I saw it, off in the distance, topple over. Five minutes after that I was electrocuted, and I am by no means joking – I got the heart monitor and the whole nine yards. Karma's tricky like that. I received an email this morning that was extremely troubling, so I decided soon after reading it ...More »

While I was getting coffee this morning I notice that on the cover of the Vancouver Sun it read Pickton jury candidates to face scrutiny, which was followed by… “Potential jurors for the trial of accused serial killer Robert (Willie) Pickton will face a more intense screening process than normal to ensure trial fairness and juror impartiality, the trial judge ruled Monday.â€? Now, I am certainly not defending Robert Pickton. What I am defending is his right to a fair and impartial trial. In this city, let ...More »

From the CBC. This applies to the last of the effected areas - Vancouver, North Vancouver, West Vancouver, and Burnaby... "Medical health officer Dr. Patricia Daly said turbidity levels in the Seymour watershed have dropped low enough to allow people to drink unboiled, unbottled water. "With the continuing downward trends in turbidity, and with nearly 1,000 water tests for bacteriological results being negative, apart from one false positive, the medical health officers believe that the water is now safe for people to drink. "So we're advising all our ...More »

This morning I was pleased to see large flats of water being unloaded off of a truck on East Cordova obviously meant to be handed out to those down here that are less fortunate and don’t have access to clean water. Of course, that hasn’t stopped some from suggesting that… “While many people in Greater Vancouver consider the boil-water advisory to be a hassle, some residents of the Downtown Eastside are welcoming it.â€? Imagine that. The balls on the disenfranchised hey? I’ve seen a grown woman throw ...More »
