Silent Criminality

The truth is a forgotten thing. It is manipulated to suit purposes in which reality is rarely represented.

The state of Israel is a prime example.

I want to begin this post by clearly stating that there is a significant difference between Judaism and Zionism. The Jewish people are amazing, as has been their utter fortitude over centuries of repression. They have survived perhaps the worst persecution of a people in the western world and must absolutely be celebrated for their ability to protect their beliefs and culture.

That said, Zionism is not Judaism. Zionism is a late 19th century ethno-political construct founded by European Jews to establish and support a Jewish homeland through colonization in the region of Palestine. Its founding premise is that Jewish history dictates that the Levant is the ancient realm of the Jewish people, despite the fact that others lived in the Levant before them, primarily the Canaanites. Subsequently, the Levant would also be under the control of the Assyrians, Babylonians, Persians, and Greeks throughout its history, not to mention the Romans. Just as the Americas have been under the control of European colonialists for centuries.

If one is to take Zionism at face value then one can easily claim that the native peoples of the Americas have vastly more rights to North, Central, and South America than any foreign colonial entity. If the same logic held true, First Nations peoples would currently be in control of three separate regions. But that is not the case despite the fact that the Americas were first populated some 13,000 years ago, which is vastly older than both the Jewish people and therefore their claim to the Levant. It’s quite interesting how history ignores one thing but can be manipulated to profound another.

I have good friends that are Jewish. If I’m to be totally honest I’m jealous of them. Their yearly traditions, their immense sense of family, their undying passions. It’s very enviable. But not one of them is a Zionist. Not even my friend Jacob who’s Orthodox.

It is very important to look at the reality of Israel and what, as a state, it has been able to get away with. First and foremost is its nuclear program, something openly exposed by Mordechai Vanunu in 1986.

Israel is the only nation in the region with a nuclear arsenal. That said, the Israelis have always denied its existence, which is referred to as nuclear opacity. It is a strategic policy where a state intentionally conceals the true status of its nuclear weapons capability, therefore neither confirming nor denying possession of weapons.

According to foreign intelligence estimates, Israel has upwards of ninety warheads making it one of the top ten nuclear powers in the world. They are both land and sea capable. If Israel wanted to, it could simply wipe out anyone in the Middle East.

That said, Israel would not be as militarily capable without the aid of the United States.

The United States provided some $21.7 billion dollars in military aid to Israel between October of 2023 and September of 2025 alone. It included a record $17.9 billion in the first year of the Gaza war. That figure is alongside a $3.8 billion dollar annual baseline.

In short, the American taxpayers are paying  for Israeli weapons. And in that, the policies of its government, which is a foreign government.

The United States has approved tens of billions in additional arms sales that Israel must pay for, including a $20 billion package approved in August 2024 featuring F15 fighter jets and missiles, a $7.4 billion sale in February 2025 of bombs and missiles, and a $6.67 billion package in January 2026 that includes Apache helicopters and tactical vehicles. This is on top of America’s ongoing support of Israeli ground defences, such as the Iron Dome.

The interesting thing in that paragraph is that the Israelis will pay that money back. Anyone that’s familiar with the power of the Israeli lobby in America knows that will never happen.

Moving on, there is absolutely no question that Israel is responsible for a genocide in Gaza. To claim otherwise is to defame the UN Charter of Human Rights, the Geneva Conventions, the ICC which has claimed Netanyahu a war criminal, and a litany of other things.

Having said that I do not agree with Hamas nor would I ever condone their attack on Israelis on October 7th. What person would?  But does that reasonably equate to genocidal practices in retribution in a strip of land in which civilians have nowhere to go, where media coverage is basically forbidden, as is the flow of aid and medical supplies. Those are highly calculated policies.

Within Zionism is the belief in a greater Israel. One that envelops other lands within the region. At present that belief is practiced by stealing Palestinian land in the West Bank believing it belongs to them. It is a despicable practice devoid of humanity. I would love to hear Mayim Bialik’s defence of it while she, herself, doesn’t live in Israel but rather a mansion in Los Angeles.

To surmise, I am in no way attacking Judaism whatsoever. Only Zionism which I believe to be entirely misrepresentative of the Jewish people. While there are many Jews that might disagree it’s important to place things into proper context. Zionism is a wholly political movement and therefore cannot claim to represent Judaism as a whole. Those that might argue to the contrary are divorced from their religion and so subscribe to a false narrative.

Peace. Forgiveness. Understanding. These are the hallmarks of life. To forget them is to embrace an impossibility that will never be corrected without a movement within oneself. That goes for all religions.

I hope, and wish, things were different. I dream of walking through the ancient markets of Jerusalem without a cloud over my head. I long to speak with its people and go in peace. I long for the world to embrace a right that now seems too far gone. I hope, with every fibre of my being, it is not too late.

I wonder if Netanyahu's gambled the whole of the Zionist project and lost these last few years. I grew up Pentecostal, hearing a lot of explicitly political sermons about supporting Israel and its eschatological importance. Save for the folks with the pointier white hoods, it was unthinkable that the right would break with Israel. The Overton window on this one always felt pretty immovable, but here we are.

I think the best solution to the conflicts in the Middle East is for the powerful (Israel) to embrace the oppressed, with true love and caring for their fellow humankind. They have for too long operated on what’s “just” and what’s “right” with defensive posturing and too many operations that look just like revenge. Drop the hate or live in it. The fear obviously is that you get bit when you hold an enemy close, but that’s why it would work so well. Also that it would seem disingenuous. It must be done with true intent, with no agenda other than peace, no response plan, no aggression, only love. Those (Hamas) who would see this as an opportunity fo…
