I’m making a record as of yesterday. It will be an imperfect sounding record compared to what’s out there. And that’s how I want it. I want it to be real, scrappy, and somewhat underproduced. The album features new songs and a few that were lost in the past that I believe should have been recorded. Either way, I’m enjoying it. I’m doing it in a small, out of the way studio in Toronto. I’ve recorded in world class studios during my career but this place feels right for this. N

Edward Costello was my great, great, great (plus more) Grandfather. He fought in the Napoleonic War in the 95th Rifles and would write a book about his experiences during it. He would later become a Yeoman at The Tower of London. If you’ve ever seen the television series Sharpe with Sean Bean, it’s a fictionalized account of a company within the 95th Rifles. Dolly Parton passed today. When I read the news I slowly began to weep. She was an absolute giant, in more ways than one. Her music was phenomenal.

Great grandfather John was a no nonsense man. He drove trains, he hunted wounded or threatening Bengal tigers, and raised sons who would become some of the best marksmen in India. Of course, he hilariously exasperated my great grandmother’s patience, which leads us to the first great family tale. It’s a battle. Every hour, every day. My microwave is ancient and does not adhere to proper timing. A bowl of ramen? Six minutes. It’s been in the house for decades. As many have noticed I no longer play guitar live. The reason is that I suffer from neuropathy. In truth, it affects both my arms and my legs. My feet are worse than my arms. This summer I purchased one of my grail watches, a 1971 Omega Seamaster. It’s a grail watch because it’s from the year that I was born. It came with the original box and papers as well. (yes, I am wearing pyjamas in the photo).

The stories of my family in India were passed down to me by my father. He would regale us with tales that were unbelievable, and in truth highly mythologized. Nevertheless, they captured my imagination which is why I remember them so clearly. I will endeavour to post those stories going forward. I believe they will be entertaining reads and ofter some insight into my family’s long history in India.

In 2019 I wrote something telling. A single verse. “I don’t like people What do you want me to say? I could lie and say that I do Cause lying’s my main thing” I don’t leave my house. Anyone that knows me knows that I don’t. The only time when I do is when I have to work, and that means an uber to the airport. I have a car that I never drive, so much so the battery dies. I rarely get the mail - it’s all junk anyway. My house looks perfectly fine if I’m not wearing my glasses.

As some of you might know, I’m a watch collector. That said, I don’t focus on high end watches as there are far better options at lower price points.
